Vera’s breath caught.

Lunch with Asher and Eira sounded like exactly the kind of balm her day needed.

But…

She closed her eyes briefly. “Actually… I have a meeting.”

There was a pause on the other end. Then, “With who?”

Vera hesitated for only a second. “Dorian.”

Silence.

“Asher?”

“Yeah,” he said finally. His voice was neutral, calm, but Vera had known him long enough to hear what was tucked beneath it. “Just… didn’t expect that.”

“I didn’t either,” she admitted. “But he called. And after reading the letter from my mother… there are things I need to ask him. Things I need to understand.”

She expected resistance.

Maybe even a sigh of disappointment.

But what she got instead was..

“Okay.”

“Okay?” she echoed, a little surprised.

“I don’t like it,” Asher said honestly. “But I trust you to do what you need to. Just... be careful. Please.”

Vera softened, lips curling slightly. “Thank you.”

“I’ll keep Eira with me,” he said after a beat. “We’ll save you a cupcake. Or maybe two.”

  • Dear Ex, I'm More Than Your Plan B   Chapter 217

Dorian sat there frozen for a second, watching her back retreat with the same icy grace that always disarmed him. Something about the way she walked away so effortlessly… like she didn’t owe him anything.Like everything he had done for her, everything he had sacrificed, was nothing more than a passing favor.No.Not again. He reached into his coat, yanked out a handful of cash, didn’t bother counting it, just slammed the crisp dollar bills on the table hard enough that the glasses rattled. The waiter blinked from across the room.Dorian was already moving. He ignored the stares, the whispers, the gasps that followed him as he rushed through the restaurant. His long strides swallowed the marble flooring, hands clenched into fists at his sides. He pushed through the glass doors and found her just at the edge of the curb, hand raised to flag a taxi.“Vera!” he called. She turned, slow and deliberate. Not surprised.“Forgot something?” she asked.Dorian came to a halt in front of her, ch

The driver took a turn, and the restaurant’s rooftop began to come into view above the skyline. The truth was, no matter what Dorian had to say, no matter what cards he thought he still held, Vera’s heart was no longer his to sway.It belonged to Asher. It always had.She just hadn’t let herself believe she deserved to hold on to it, until now.As the car slowed in front of the glass wrapped entrance, Vera finally tucked her phone into her clutch and exhaled a quiet, bracing breath.Time to face the past.Because her future was already waiting for her in a silly selfie, a little girl’s laughter… and the quiet strength of a man who hadn’t let her fall, even when she tried to.Vera stepped out of the taxi with quiet poise, the click of her heels against the pavement sharp and steady. The restaurant stood sleek and modern, its glass exterior catching rays of sunlight and reflecting the curious glances of a few passersby already murmuring among themselves. She adjusted her blazer, brushin

Vera didn’t realize she’d started crying until a tear splashed onto the corner of the card. Her heart clenched. She lowered herself onto the edge of her office chair, holding the card close, hugging it like it was a piece of her daughter.Of her home. Her family.Everything around her, the office, the company, the expectations, faded for a brief second. All she could feel was love. Pure, bright, uncomplicated love in the form of a sunflower bouquet and a cupcake that had a tiny crown on it.She smiled through her tears, brushing them away hastily. "Of course she picked sunflowers," she murmured. Then she took a bite of the crowned cupcake, laughing under her breath when the frosting left glitter on her lip.One of the senior staff who had knocked earlier poked his head in and paused at the sight, about to ask something.“Later,” Vera said softly, waving him off.Right now, she needed a minute.Just a minute to remember who she was doing this for.And when she was done, she’d wipe away

Vera tapped her nails once against the glass.“This is your chance,” she said. “To stop thinking of me as the girl who disappeared or the daughter who didn’t grow up in these halls. I’m here now. And if we work together, we can take the Sterling Group somewhere it’s never gone before.”There was no fanfare. No applause.Just a slow ripple of understanding, of shifting perspectives, of respect. It was a start. And that was all she needed. As the meeting adjourned and people began filing out, Vera gathered her folders calmly. Hargrove walked by her side.“That was a hell of a debut,” he said. “You made your mother proud today.”Vera’s throat tightened slightly, but she kept her chin high.“She gave me the foundation,” she said softly. “I’m just building the rest.”Just as she stepped out of the room, her phone buzzed again. This time, a message from the Donovan Corporation.A calendar invite for a preliminary partnership review meeting.Requested by Asher Donovan. She stared at it for a

“I wasn’t just sitting at Dorian Fontaine’s table looking pretty,” she said coolly. “I built things. Things that changed the direction of entire departments. I worked under pseudonyms because I wasn’t interested in fame or reputation. I wanted the freedom to create.”A pause. Then, softer: “But I see now that silence is often mistaken for irrelevance.”She stepped away from the screen and turned back toward the table, arms lightly crossed.“My mother didn’t give me this company because I was her daughter. She gave it to me because I’ve earned it. Just in a way that none of you ever took the time to learn.”One of the older board members, Mr. Linwood, who had remained quiet throughout, finally leaned forward, steepling his fingers.“I was on the acquisition board that bid on Helix,” he said slowly. “We were outbid by Fontaine. Never knew who built it.”He looked up.There was something different in his gaze now.Something Vera hadn’t seen since she walked in.Acknowledgment.“You’re sa
