Vera stayed by the doorway, not yet ready to move closer.

There was a silence between them, long and thick with the weight of everything that had gone unsaid for too many years.

“I’m not here for reconciliation,” Vera said suddenly. “I’m not here to play pretend family. I just… I didn’t want to hate myself if something happened.”

A silence stretched, but to her surprise, Elena nodded.

“I don’t expect your forgiveness,” she said softly. “God knows I wouldn’t give it, if I were in your place.”

That cracked something in Vera. It was the first honest thing she’d ever heard from this woman.

“I wanted to meet you before it was too late,” Elena continued, eyes flickering to the sunlight filtering through the windows. “Not as a Sterling. Not as the mother who failed you. Just… as a woman who made too many mistakes and is out of time to fix them.”

Vera looked at her for a long moment, her throat tight.

“Then don’t ask me for anything,” she said. “Don’t ask me to be a daughter. Just let me say

Vera smiled, her chest tightening in the best way. “Okay, my turn.”She looked at her daughter and Asher, her voice quieter. “My rose... is this. Right now. Sitting here with you two. Laughing. Eating. Feeling like... I’m home.”Asher looked away for a second, like the emotion in her words hit too hard.“My thorn,” Vera said, “is seeing how much I missed out on. How long it took me to get back here.”There was a long pause. Asher reached out and covered her hand with his.“You’re here now,” he said softly.“And my bud,” Vera continued, blinking past the sudden sting in her eyes, “is... making this last.”They sat in silence for a moment. Eira’s little feet swung under the table, her gaze darting between them with a satisfied grin.“Your turn, Daddy,” she said, pointing a sticky finger at Asher. He cleared his throat, keeping his hand over Vera’s.“My rose is seeing both of you in this office. Like it’s finally whole.”He glanced at Vera. “My thorn is... knowing how close I came to los

Vera tilted her head up slowly, her breath catching as she met Asher’s eyes again. They were so close now, barely inches apart. His hand remained on her waist, fingers tense like he still couldn't believe she was really here, in his arms. She could feel the rhythm of his heart under her palms, thudding hard and fast against his chest.“I missed you,” he murmured. She didn't answer with words.Instead, her fingers slid to the nape of his neck, and she pulled him down to her.The kiss started slow. Soft. Almost uncertain. But then it deepened.Years of longing. Months of tension. Weeks of confusion and pain, it all melted into that one kiss. His lips moved over hers like he was trying to memorize them all over again, like he never wanted to let go.Her hands tangled in his hair, pressing herself closer to him, his body responding without hesitation.Asher backed her against his desk without breaking the kiss. Papers fluttered to the floor. The polished wood was cold against her fingerti

Dorian turned and began walking, back toward the car waiting for him, his stride slow, deliberate. His driver opened the door but paused when he caught the look in his boss’s eyes.“Sir?” the man asked cautiously.“Call Matteo,” Dorian said evenly, sliding into the seat. “Tell him to move up the timeline. And make sure the files on Donovan’s clean up operations, the medical bribes, and his mother’s sealed psychiatric records are ready for release.”The driver hesitated. “You’re really going there?”Dorian’s smile was thin. Empty. “We tried the good way. She didn’t choose it. So now... we burn the path behind her. No more exits. No more Donovan.”He leaned back, shutting the door with a gentle click. As the car pulled off, he stared out the window, the city’s lights blurring past. His fingers tapped against his thigh in rhythm, controlled, methodical, patient. The same way he’d planned every business coup, every takeover. This wasn’t jealousy anymore.Because if Vera wanted to be with

Dorian sat there frozen for a second, watching her back retreat with the same icy grace that always disarmed him. Something about the way she walked away so effortlessly… like she didn’t owe him anything.Like everything he had done for her, everything he had sacrificed, was nothing more than a passing favor.No.Not again. He reached into his coat, yanked out a handful of cash, didn’t bother counting it, just slammed the crisp dollar bills on the table hard enough that the glasses rattled. The waiter blinked from across the room.Dorian was already moving. He ignored the stares, the whispers, the gasps that followed him as he rushed through the restaurant. His long strides swallowed the marble flooring, hands clenched into fists at his sides. He pushed through the glass doors and found her just at the edge of the curb, hand raised to flag a taxi.“Vera!” he called. She turned, slow and deliberate. Not surprised.“Forgot something?” she asked.Dorian came to a halt in front of her, ch

The driver took a turn, and the restaurant’s rooftop began to come into view above the skyline. The truth was, no matter what Dorian had to say, no matter what cards he thought he still held, Vera’s heart was no longer his to sway.It belonged to Asher. It always had.She just hadn’t let herself believe she deserved to hold on to it, until now.As the car slowed in front of the glass wrapped entrance, Vera finally tucked her phone into her clutch and exhaled a quiet, bracing breath.Time to face the past.Because her future was already waiting for her in a silly selfie, a little girl’s laughter… and the quiet strength of a man who hadn’t let her fall, even when she tried to.Vera stepped out of the taxi with quiet poise, the click of her heels against the pavement sharp and steady. The restaurant stood sleek and modern, its glass exterior catching rays of sunlight and reflecting the curious glances of a few passersby already murmuring among themselves. She adjusted her blazer, brushin

Vera’s breath caught.Lunch with Asher and Eira sounded like exactly the kind of balm her day needed. But…She closed her eyes briefly. “Actually… I have a meeting.”There was a pause on the other end. Then, “With who?”Vera hesitated for only a second. “Dorian.”Silence.“Asher?”“Yeah,” he said finally. His voice was neutral, calm, but Vera had known him long enough to hear what was tucked beneath it. “Just… didn’t expect that.”“I didn’t either,” she admitted. “But he called. And after reading the letter from my mother… there are things I need to ask him. Things I need to understand.”She expected resistance.Maybe even a sigh of disappointment. But what she got instead was..“Okay.”“Okay?” she echoed, a little surprised.“I don’t like it,” Asher said honestly. “But I trust you to do what you need to. Just... be careful. Please.”Vera softened, lips curling slightly. “Thank you.”“I’ll keep Eira with me,” he said after a beat. “We’ll save you a cupcake. Or maybe two.”“Make it thr
