☆☆SUMMER’S POV☆☆

Keep a secret from Hayden? Sure. I could. If it meant protecting him. But staring at JT, I realized Hayden never told me anything about this man. Danger didn’t just hang around him—it was who he was.

“JT…” I hesitated. “What do I have to do?”

“Nothing much. Just find out more about Tara, and ask your best friend about his sister’s death. Don’t ask how I know about you and Jake. I think somehow, Hayden knows the truth and is only trying to forget it on purpose.”

“What do you mean? He doesn’t remember. Didn’t he tell you about it?”

The look in JT’s eyes told me otherwise. Hayden didn’t tell him about what really happened. I closed the gap between us. My voice was a hushed whisper as I said,

“Hayden had an accident after Nancy died. He believes he killed her.”

“Did he?”

JT didn’t sound surprised. My glare cut through him.

“Of course not. I don’t think Hayden could do something like that.”

“Are you sure?”

“I’m positive.”

I filled JT in about Hayden’s accident and amnesia

☆☆ JAKE’S POV ☆☆(Flashback)“Have you seen Kat?” Jane’s voice was sharp, almost shaking. “She’s been missing since the party.”“How did you find where I live?”“I followed you. I’m sorry. I saw what happened at the cafeteria and followed you all the way here. The security wouldn’t let me through but I told them I was a friend. I slipped past them.”I leaned against the doorframe, forcing my face blank. “That’s called stalking, breaking and entering.”She sighed. “Not when I can’t help it.”“What do you want?”“My sister. She’s missing.”“Well, I haven’t seen her since that night.”“You’re sure?” Her eyes narrowed. “Because your friends are saying—”“I said no!” The words ripped out harsher than I meant. I softened, tried again. “I didn’t even get the chance to know her that well. It was just for a couple of hours. She left me. Said she needed air, but never came back. See, if Kat reaches out, I’ll let you know. I promise.”“Please,” Jane’s voice cracked, eyes glossy. “I know Kat can

☆☆ SUMMER’S POV ☆☆I didn’t know how long I slept. When I finally stirred, the first thing that hit me wasn’t light or sound. It was aroma. Savory, rich, mouthwatering. Something with garlic, herbs… maybe chicken? For a second, I thought I was dreaming. Because food that good only belonged in dreams. One time in eighth grade, I dreamt I was eating cotton candy. Turned out I was chewing my pillow. And the worst part? Keith walked in and witnessed the whole thing. That boy just never knew how to knock. For months, it was “Pillow Girl this, Pillow Girl that.” I hated that nickname with a burning passion. But then I remembered, this was Hayden’s place. The man cooked like it was his side hustle. I sat up lazily, pulling my hair out of my face.“Oh God,” I mumbled weakly. My entire body still felt like Jell-O despite all that sleep. I reached for my phone on the nightstand—past six in the evening. Eight hours gone. Just like that. I shoved the blanket aside, ready to stand—then froze.I w

☆☆ SUMMER’S POV ☆☆The doctor led JT and I to his office. He shut the door behind us and motioned for us to sit. We did. “I wanted to speak to his father privately because… the situation is unusual,” the doctor began.“Like I said, I am his uncle. This is his girlfriend. Whatever it is, you can tell us. We'll pass it across to his father,” said JT.I didn’t speak, just folded my hands on my laps. I shifted in my chair, stomach twisting. The doctor opened Hayden’s chart, flipping pages with deliberate slowness. “When the patient was brought in, he was unresponsive. His vitals were dangerously unstable: Oxygen saturation dropping, pulse irregular. But the tests didn’t show infection, no signs of acute illness. Nothing that should have caused it.”I held my breath, my hands clenching into fists.“And then,” the doctor continued, his voice lowering, “we ran a toxicology screen.” He paused, letting the words settle. “There were sedatives in his bloodstream. High concentrations. Enough to

☆☆SUMMER’S POV☆☆Hayden wasn’t breathing right. I shook him, my hands trembling so badly I could barely grip his shoulders.“Hayden? Is this a joke? Hayden? Wake up.”He didn’t move. I shook him harder.“Babe?”Nothing.Panic crawled in. How the fuck did this happen? What exactly happened? I had no idea. He was just asleep and now… this? I was so confused and frightened.“Hayden! Wake up!” My voice cracked. “Please—don’t do this to me!”Nothing. His skin was damp, slick with sweat, his chest heaving like his lungs were fighting him. A choked sound tore from my throat as I grabbed his phone, but my hands slipped, fingers numb. My own phone. Where’s my damn phone?I fumbled on the nightstand, found it, and hit 911.“Emergency services, what’s your—”“My boyfriend’s not—he’s not waking up! He just—he collapsed and—he’s burning up, please, I don’t know what’s happening!” My voice was high, broken, choking over itself.“Ma’am, calm down. Give me the address.”I rattled it off, heart slammi

☆☆SUMMER’S POV☆☆“You’re lying.”A flicker. Barely there. But I saw it—the flash of something raw in his eyes before he shut it down again.“I wish I was,” he said. “There’s a scar on my scalp. The back of my head. I had an accident a few days after Nancy died. I wasn’t supposed to live. But I woke up in the hospital. The doctor said it was a miracle. I couldn’t remember anything that happened for the last couple of weeks. I called Nancy, forgetting she was already dead.”My throat tightened. “And you expect me to believe you killed her?”Hayden’s gaze locked onto mine, unblinking, dangerous in its stillness. I slipped my hand from him, stepped back, hands running through my hair.“It’s not true.”“I did it, Summer.”“I don’t believe you’re capable of doing anything like that.”“But you don’t know me.”“I do,” I yelled, heart shattering.Silence stretched between us. The only sound pounding in my ears was the sound of my ragged breaths.“I do, Hayden,” I whispered. “I know you. You ma
