☆☆SUMMER'S POV☆☆

I didn’t take the phone. Not yet. I just stared at it. Unsure if I wanted to touch it. Afraid it might burn my skin.

“Are you mad I answered?” Celeste asked, voice floating through my ears like smoke.

I shook my head slowly. “No. Not at all.”

I reached for the phone. Good thing it didn’t burn. I was okay. However, my fingers trembled.

“Thanks,” I said.

Celeste’s smile widened—sharp and sugarcoated.

“You’re welcome,” she whispered. “I’ll be outside.”

She left without waiting for a response. The door shut behind her. And I lifted the phone to my ear. My voice cracked.

“…Jake?”

“Hey, Summer.”

Something was wrong. I could tell just by the tone of his voice.

“Jake, are you good?”

He stuttered. “Yeah. I’m fine.”

“You don’t sound fine. Where are you?”

“I’m being hospitalized.”

My heart jumped to my throat.

“What? What do you mean hospitalized? Jake, where are you at the moment? What happened?”

“Don’t worry too much about me. I just had too many drinks and had one hell of a

♡♡HAYDEN'S POV♡♡🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥The cuffs were still warm where they’d bitten into her wrists. I should’ve taken them off before I stood. Should’ve given her back her shirt. But I’d already torn it up. I’d have to give her mine. I should've done a lot of things—none of which included opening that door to JT.🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥The knock came again. Too sharp this time around. JT always knew how to make an entrance. Of all 24 hours in a day, he chose now to invade my privacy.I carried Summer to the bathroom to wash off. She was shaking like a leaf. So small and so fragile. I could keep her here forever with me if it were possible. I left my shirt on the towel hook.I walked back to the room to find a new shirt in the wardrobe. I buttoned slowly, pretending I couldn’t hear the banging on the door and Ernesto’s voice underneath JT’s hollering.“Boss, he said he wouldn’t leave,” Ernesto said out loud when JT stopped hitting the door.“I can speak for myself,” JT countered.BANG. BANG. He slammed his

☆☆SUMMER'S POV☆☆Hayden stepped away from me. He moved in circles. Each step made my heart beat faster. His voice came from behind, startling me.“Will you be my girlfriend, nugget?”I froze. That was not where I thought this was going. Not here. Not now. I never could have thought Hayden would ask me out. I’d wanted this since forever. Since the first day I saw him last summer, but now I just.. I didn’t know what to say.“I—” My throat tightened. He stepped closer until I felt his chest against my back, his mouth brushing my ear.“Hayden, I don’t know what to say.”“Say yes,” he murmured.“What happens if I say no?”His hands slid down my arms and stopped at my hips. He traced the cuffs with a finger.“You won’t say no.”“How are you so fucking sure?”I should have stalled. I should have laughed it off. But my head was swimming. My body shuddered as his hands glided up and down my arms again. I wanted to turn to him. But I couldn’t. I just felt stupid. Shitty. Jake was suffering and

☆☆SUMMER’S POV☆☆“Matteo, this is umm—”“Summer’s boyfriend,” Hayden cut in. He didn’t say it like a title. He said it like a warning. “Her boyfriend.”He still had the bouquet in his hand. They were red roses. My favorite. The stems gripped so tight I thought the thorns might break his skin. One petal fluttered loose and landed at his feet.Okay. Calm down, Summer. Just breathe. This should be the part where I say something like, “It’s not what you think.” But that’ll just be me saying, “it is what you actually think.”Right? There was literally nothing happening between Matteo and me. So, fuck it. Breathe, Summer. Breathe.“Hey, I didn’t know you were coming,” I whispered as Hayden got closer.“I didn’t know I’d find you out here,” he replied.“Well… that’s a shocker for both of us.” I smiled anxiously. His arm came around my waist. I winced. I wasn’t expecting that. Hell, no. I wasn’t. And his touch was not a gentle pull, but an unspoken claim. It screamed MINE. And God, the way

☆☆SUMMER'S POV☆☆Tara arched a brow, her voice soft and calculated.“Be Jake’s best friend again. Let Hayden go. He dates around. That’s who he is. That’s how he lives. All you have to do is break up with him. Forget him. It shouldn’t take long.”My heart raced. Hayden and I weren't even dating. It was more like an entanglement. Yeah. That's what it was. Still, I didn’t know what to say to Tara. Or what to feel. But whatever was buzzing in my chest—it definitely wasn’t fear.It was rage. And shock. Break up with Hayden? It wouldn't take long to get over him? Are you kidding me? My fists clenched on my thighs.“I can’t do that,” I heard myself say. Loud enough to startle her.She leaned in, eyes wide, gawking at me like I was the eighth wonder of the world.“I want to protect both my sons,” she said, “but you’re slowly tearing my family apart. That’s what you’re doing. You don’t get it, do you?”“Then make me understand.”“I only want you to take care of Jake, Summer. I’ll handle Hayde

☆☆SUMMER'S POV☆☆I was still standing there like a glitch in reality when the girl turned.“Have we met?” she asked, eyes narrowing just enough to imply curiosity, not concern. What the hell do I say? What the fuck, Summer?I shook my head. “No.”She blinked slowly. “Huh—I swear you look familiar.”Maybe because we had actually met—in class, I almost said, but didn’t. Seeing her now, I wasn’t sure I wanted the truth anymore. Or to know the girl Hayden was with before me. But before I could form a lie worth saying, Celeste piped up from behind me.“Oh, Rowan, since you’re here, why don’t you come in. Have something to eat.”The girl—Rowan, apparently—smiled, but there was something behind it. Like she’d rehearsed it too many times and forgotten what a real smile felt like.Celeste observed the package. It was a big box. Wrapped. No return address. No branding. Just… nylon, like it had been dipped in anonymity and dried in someone’s regrets.“I told you I’d bring it myself this time,” R
