Chapter 32

Gerald unbuckled his seatbelt and sat still for a moment. The engine hummed low beneath him, but his thoughts were louder. He exhaled slowly, one hand gripping the wheel, the other resting on his thigh. In all his life, he’d never done what he was about to do—not for any woman. Except one . One he never talks about anymore.

“You can do this, Gerald,” he said under his breath. Then he stepped out into the warm California air.

The parking lot outside the mall was quiet—blessedly so. No reporters. No flashes. No crowd. That alone was enough to make him sigh in relief.

He could’ve sent his driver. That would’ve been the logical thing. But this wasn’t about logic. Not today.

The automatic doors slid open, and the moment he stepped inside, heads turned.

It was subtle at first—a few sideways glances, a murmur. Then a ripple.

“Oh my God, is that Gerald Smith?”

“Isn’t he the billionaire CEO?”

“What’s he doing here?”

Gerald guided Anna toward their table, his hand firm yet tender on the small of her back. The warmth of his touch anchored her in the room buzzing with chatter, laughter, and champagne flutes clinking under crystal chandeliers. Every step she took with him felt deliberate, as though he were telling the world, She’s mine.Across the table, Andy nearly spat his wine. He coughed hard, covering it with a clenched fist, though the bitterness rising in his throat was far from the wine. They came? His pulse raced. His mother had warned him Gerald might be invited, but Andy had scoffed, convinced Gerald wouldn’t show up. Gerald was notorious for dodging social events, preferring to stay cloaked in power rather than paraded in public. And yet here he was. Not just here—he was here with her.Andy’s stomach twisted. Anna. The moment she had swept into the hall through those massive double doors, Andy thought he had seen a vision. He blinked once, twice, convinced it couldn’t be her. But now, sit

Gerald stood in the foyer, broad shoulders squared, the overhead light glinting against the satin lapels of his tuxedo. The cut was sharp, hugging him like it had been tailored to his very skin. His shirt gaped open at the top, three buttons undone, exposing the sculpted ridges of his chest. He tugged at his cufflinks, impatient, and checked his Rolex with a low groan.“Anna,” he called, voice rumbling through the high-ceilinged hall. “Does it take this long to get dressed?”Her voice floated down from upstairs, sing-song, teasing. “Relax, Mr. Impatient. Some things are worth the wait.”His mouth curved into a smirk. “Worth the wait? You’ve had me standing here thirty minutes while you play hide-and-seek with your makeup.” His voice rose, rich with mock annoyance. From behind the door, she fired back, “Don’t be so dramatic!”Gerald shook his head, ready with another quip, but the moment the bedroom door opened, his words died.Anna appeared at the top of the staircase, and the world t

Anna picked up the phone from the passenger seat, squinting at the glowing screen as if her eyes were playing tricks on her.Gerald.Her heart skipped a beat. She hadn’t expected to see his name, not after she ended his call with Aiden abruptly. Her thumb hovered over the green icon, her chest tightening. She knew exactly what he wanted—to talk to her, to swoop in and play hero. But she wasn’t some helpless damsel waiting to be rescued. Not anymore. Not after Andy’s betrayal. Not after Gerald had fired her as if she were disposable. No, she thought, jaw tightening. I made a promise to myself. No more leaning on any son of Adam. With deliberate slowness, she placed the phone back on the seat. “He’ll get tired eventually,” she muttered, folding her arms across her chest as if bracing against the ache inside.Outside the car window, firefighters moved like shadows against the flames, their voices sharp over the hiss of water and the crackle of burning wood. Neighbors huddled together, so

“Owe you?” Anna scoffed, though her heart was running a marathon in three hundred and sixty deg“Yes,” Gerald murmured, flashing one of his devil-may-care smiles. “I mean, my idea worked.”His hand slid through her hair, fingers lingering until they grazed the nape of her neck. The simple touch made her shiver. The fine hairs on her skin prickled upright.“You should’ve seen the look on your ex-husband’s face,” he whispered, hi brushing warm . Why did I take off my jacket earlier? she bit her lip.She had shrugged out of it before Gerald called her over to help with some paperwork. Now, she sat in nothing but a thin silk camisole—light enough for the summer heat but far too revealing under his piercing gaze. The office, already warm since morning, now felt suffocating. With Gerald’s eyes prowling over her like a predator, it was as though the temperature had erupted into a monstrous volcano. Her skin prickled as if she were stripped bare. Even her breasts felt exposed despite the boob

Vivian’s heart skipped a beat the instant she saw the name flashing on her caller ID.Mum.Her throat dried up, her palms instantly damp. All the memories she had tried so hard to bury—the ones she had drowned with laughter, work, and Erick’s tenderness—surged back like a floodgate opening. The phone kept buzzing, vibrating against her palm as though it wanted to crawl inside her chest. Her hand lingered over the screen, frozen, while her heart raced like a caged bird. Why now? What does she want from me?Erick noticed it immediately. The brightness on Vivian’s face had dimmed, her smile vanishing as quickly as it had come. She looked like she was staring at something—or someone—that could ruin her world in a single second.“Why aren’t you picking up?” His voice was gentle, but his brows knitted in concern.Vivian shook her head, her lips pressed tightly together. It didn’t take a genius to see she wasn’t okay.Erick leaned over curiously, catching a glimpse of the glowing screen. “It

The car door clicked shut behind Andy, and before he could even fasten his seat belt, Penelope’s voice cut through the silence like a whip.“What the hell was that stunt Anna pulled in the boardroom?” she snapped, her tone sharp enough to slice through steel.Andy exhaled slowly, the weight of the day pressing down on him. His temples throbbed with the kind of headache that no aspirin could cure.Penelope wasn’t finished. She leaned toward him, her eyes blazing with fury. “What’s that crazy ex-wife of yours trying to do? She’s trying to ruin everything for us.” A vein popped along her temple as her jaw tightened.Andy rubbed his forehead, fighting to stay calm. “I still can’t believe this,” he muttered under his breath, half-dazed.“You’d better start believing it,” Penelope spat, her voice dripping with venom. “Mr. Smith wasn’t even difficult with me the day I went to pitch our proposal. He was quiet, almost withdrawn. But the moment that ex-wife of yours walked in, she ruined the en
