Vivian stared at her phone’s screen. The name Anna – my bestie stared back at her.

One arm wrapped tightly around her knee, she tapped the send button again. Silence. The same silence she’d been met with every time she dialed the number.

“Did she block me?”

A long, heavy sigh escaped her lips.

Frustrated, she tossed her phone aside. Anna’s number had not been going through for days now.

She couldn’t stop regretting her actions from that day. Regret sat heavy on her chest like a stone.

The sound of her doorbell jolted her back to the present.

“Who could that be?”

Quietly, she climbed down from her couch and slipped into her fluffy fur rabbit flops.

She tugged her bumshort up a little before walking to the door.

Peeking through the door hole, a small smile curved her lips, easing the worry on her face when she saw a head of dark curls turned toward her.

She flipped her black waves to the side and unlocked the locks.

Gerald had just finished reviewing the stock logs in the inventory department when his phone vibrated in his pocket.“Excuse me,” he said to the head supervisor, his tone polite but brisk. “I need to take this call.”He stepped out into the hallway, the warehouse scent of cardboard and dust still clinging to him.The number flashing on the screen was unfamiliar—no caller ID, no location tag. His thumb hovered over the decline icon. Gerald hated taking calls from unknown numbers; ninety-nine times out of a hundred, they were either a nuisance or trouble. He almost swiped it away. Almost.Something—maybe instinct, maybe the faint prickle at the back of his neck—made him stop.Taking a steadying breath, he hit accept and lifted the phone to his ear.“Hello, Mr. Smith…” A deep male voice rolled through the speaker, low and guttural, like gravel under a truck tire.Gerald’s brow furrowed. “Who is this?”“I’m the nightmare you’ll wish you’d never met,” the man said, each word soaked in mena

“I think I’ll get a sandwich today,” Anna said with a soft smile to the breakroom attendant.Maya, the ever-cheerful older woman behind the counter, returned the smile warmly. “Alright, dear. How about a double-loaded one today?” She gave a playful wink.Anna’s eyes lit up with genuine delight. “Oh, I think I need that.”“Of course, my darling.” Maya chuckled. “An extra layer of turkey and mayo makes it even better.”“Absolutely,” Anna grinned, already imagining the taste. She always looked forward to her encounters with Maya. The woman’s golden-toned skin and silver hair—usually tucked neatly under a crisp white bonnet—gave her an air of grace. Her lashes curled lightly over kind eyes, and her wrinkled smile somehow made her look younger, as though joy had kept a piece of her youth preserved.Maya was a storyteller, a joker, a bringer of light in an otherwise tense workday. You could tell, just from the way she carried herself, that her younger years had been full of life and adventu

The sharp gasp cut through the quiet like a blade.“Oh. My. God!” Jasmine’s voice cracked, her hands flying to her mouth as her eyes bulged so wide they looked ready to tumble out. Her jaw hung open, trembling, disbelief and fury fighting for dominance in her expression. The file she had been holding slipped from her fingers, papers scattering across the polished floor. What the hell? The CEO—Gerald King—is secretly smooching his assistant? Have they been… having an affair all along? Her hands balled into tight fists, nails biting into her palms. I knew it. I had my suspicions from the start. And I was right. Her lips twisted into a snarl. So this is why Miss Calm-and-Collected Anna prances around like she’s all business? She’s here to have the CEO to herself?Jealousy slithered through her chest, hot and corrosive, eating at her from the inside out. She wanted to march forward and rip that smug, innocent expression right off Anna’s face. The sharp thud of the file hitting the floor m

“Do you think you can just kiss me and then run away like nothing happened?” Gerald’s voice cut through the silence, low and edged, his eyes narrowing into slits.Anna’s throat bobbed as she swallowed, her pulse pounding like a drum beneath her skin.“Do you have any idea,” he went on, his tone softer now but laced with a raw intensity, “how long I’ve wanted to kiss you? To hold you? To feel you in my arms… to touch you?”Those piercing blue eyes fixed on her with the kind of reverence reserved for rare treasures. Anna felt as if he were gazing straight into her soul, weighing her, wanting her, claiming her without a word.Gerald Smith is admitting he’s wanted me? The thought lit up something inside her, a surge of joy she wanted to scream into the air.But just as quickly, reality tugged her back. Her mind flashed to the threatening letter. She still didn’t know if it had anything to do with him—or if it was a cruel coincidence.I shouldn’t be this happy just because my boss says he

The steering wheel jolted violently in Anna’s hands, the tires shrieking as the car veered off the asphalt. Her heart slammed against her ribs, the sound of gravel spraying beneath her wheels echoing like gunfire.“God, no—no!” she gasped, yanking the wheel to the left with all the strength her trembling arms could muster. For a sickening moment, the nose of the car pointed straight toward the jagged drop-off. Beyond it, the Pacific shimmered far below—blue, vast, and merciless. She slammed her foot on the brake. The tires skidded, squealing in protest before the car finally lurched to a stop on the shoulder—one wheel still kissing the edge of loose gravel. Her hands stayed locked on the wheel, knuckles bone-white. Her pulse thundered so loud she couldn’t hear anything else. Air rushed in and out of her lungs in quick, shallow bursts.A passing SUV blared its horn, jolting her like a slap. She flinched, chest tightening. For several seconds, she couldn’t move. The image of the cliff r
