More of A Mistress than A Bride

I walked into the mansion after sunset, having strolled around to the company to try and get things off my mind. The house was quiet, not like we made a lot of noise typically, but there was no sign of my father either.

It was probably the best. After what happened today, I would be lying if I said I didn't feel a little bit of resentment towards him for making me have to deal with this.

I just wasn't sure if the hatred I felt towards him was for ten years ago or for right now.

I started to make my way towards the stairs when his voice filled the empty space, causing my fingers to instantly clench.

"You are back."

I turned, my eyes slowly dropping. I couldn't help the ice I felt. "I stopped by the cartel and the company."

"You went there rather late. Where were you?"

I could hear the accusation in his voice, and just from the way he was holding his cigarette, I knew he knew something I had been hiding.

It couldn't be Andrew, right? Leone wouldn't be a little snitch on top of being a complete heartless bastard.

"Leone got me a dress. For the wedding."

His eyes darted down to the bag I was holding, and all of a sudden, he broke into a smile.

"He must have taken a liking to you already, seeing how he never mentioned going dress shopping."

I swallowed hard, hiding my real emotions. If I corrected him, I would have to unmask Andrew.

"I am tired. I will go up."

"Don Luciano wants to have dinner with you tomorrow."

I stopped in my tracks and turned, my brow raising. "Why?"

"He wants to meet his daughter-in-law. From what I have gathered, Leone is his only son, and he would do absolutely everything to protect him. I don't think your plan to kill him on the wedding night would be very feasible now, sweetheart."

My eyes met his. "Why does it sound like that is what you wanted me to do all along?"

He blew a smoke and laughed, shaking his head. "Not exactly, but I can't deny that it is faster than whatever the marriage would offer long term."

"Dad, are you.." I bit down on my lips hard. "Are you not even remorseful about what happened ten years ago?"

"It had to happen, so no. Make sure to look and act your best tomorrow. I want nothing but stellar reviews of my daughter."

I let out a shaky breath. "What if he finds out? Leone knows us. What if Don Luciano finds out what we did to his only son?"

For the first time, my father seemed to stop. It was almost as if he didn't factor it in his little equation. Like he didn't think that it would be completely possible for Don Luciano to ruin both of us for what happened.

"He will not," Dad said simply. "Go up, I need to make some calls."

I let out a sigh and turned, making my way upstairs.

"That boy," Dad suddenly said, and I turned, my brows furrowed.

"What boy?"

"Your friend. The one who helped with him. You know what I am talking about."

I blinked. Andrew. He was talking about Andrew. "What about him?"

"Do you know where he is?"

Beads of perspiration filled my forehead, and my fists clenched hard. "No, why?"

"I might have to throw him to the dogs if needed. Find him for me."

His eyes met mine, his brow rising, and I immediately nodded.

"I... I will try."

Before he could say one more thing, I ran up the stairs to my room, letting go of the dress to the floor, my heart pounding hard in my chest.

With every second since Leone came back to my life, I have been proven extremely powerless. To everyone. And now, it seemed like I wouldn't even be able to protect Andrew, too.

The hours blurred out in front of my eyes, and by morning, dad had brought a designer home to fit the dress on a mannequin that stood right next to my closet, as if to remind me of the leash Leone had around my neck.

My phone buzzed as I stood there, looking at the mirror. I was a mess, but my emotions were an even bigger mess.

I slowly reached for my phone. It was a text. I opened it to Andrew's number.

"I am sorry, I love you," It said simply.

I let go of the phone to the floor, a single tear filling my left eye as I looked up to the red dress again.

I bit down on my lips, then slowly reached for my phone again. I was powerless, but not calm. Not submissive.

I searched for the number of my direct assistant, then called, my eyes still fixed on the dress, my hatred growing with each passing second.

"Hello, Ma'am Ginevra?"

I bit down on my lips. "I want a tailored black wedding dress. One week is all I am giving you."

"Yes, Ma'am. Can I have measurements, please?"

"Check your messages."

"Yes, Ma'am."

I cut the call, texted her the measurements, then stood up. I grabbed the scissors in my closet and set to work on the dress.

It was yet another symbol of Leone, and this... this was a symbol of my defiance. Once I was done, I let go of the scissors and took a step back.

The long dress now stopped mid thigh, and it looked nothing like a wedding dress. Not even close.

Satisfied, I popped into the shower.

It was past lunch by the time I finished with everything I was doing, and I did a good job of hiding the dress from my dad till I was set to leave for dinner.

I stood in front of the mirror, taking in my appearance. My hair fell down my back in waves, and I wore black stilettos to go with the now mini dress. I looked more like a mistress than a bride, and I loved it.

I should have run. I should have turned and walked away and pretended I heard nothing.Instead, like a fool, I stood there, the tray barely dangling on my fingers, my eyes holding his. It felt like the opulence of this mansion, the presence of Don Luciano, hell, even the bloody tray I was holding, all of it melted into oblivion. Like it was just he and I across a sandvial through to a time where I meant everything to him.I watched the ice take over his eyes again, his jaw tightening.Don Luciano said something, but I could hardly hear it above the rapid beating of my own heart.Slowly, he let his eyes drop from mine. A second was all it took, and I could feel the intensity of his gaze running down my body before he met my eyes again.I sucked in a sharp breath as I turned away, something twisting in my stomach. It felt like an endless push and pull. Like I knew he would make good his threat of revenge, but only... only if his gaze doesn't ruin me first. I walked upstairs absent mi

I held my breath as I dropped the dress I was wearing, then stepped into the bath. Everything in the bathroom was black, and it held a deep, lingering scent of lavender. The same lavender that I had smelled earlier against Leone's chest.I closed my eyes as I leaned back into the bath, willing myself to forget about everything that had happened today. Not just today. Ever since my life was tipped over ten years ago.It wasn't easy when the person who had been the most affected by my cowardice all those years ago was the person who had shielded me today. Not when his scent was engraved in the walls around me, and now, my skin.I sighed, then got out of the bath and dried off my hair. I wore the shirt, then looked around. There wasn't a single mirror in the entire room, and I wondered if that was a choice or...With Leone, everything was a choice.I sat on the edge of the bed, my chest heaving hard. Now that I was here, what was I supposed to do? This was by no means my home, and even a

My gaze flew up to Leone, who was watching my dad now. He was unarmed, but between the three of us, we knew he was just as dangerous either way. "Leone," I said, barely able to get out of the trance.'My wife.' His wife. Fuck."This is my father. I don't know how you know what...""Don Matteo!" Leone said, turning into the still open car fast. Before I could say a word more, my father stilled, his eyes wide, as the round barrel of Leone's gold plated gun rested right at the back of his neck."Now."I froze in place, my eyes leaving Leone to settle on Dad. He never apologizes. Not to me, not to anyone. Not even to mum. Would he really do it now?Despite the strange circumstances, I felt a bit of curiosity. The rain pelted down on all three of us, and Leone took a step further, burying the gun in my father's thinning hair."I am sorry, Ginevra," my dad suddenly said, the words tumbling out of him like he was coughing them out, his eyes focused on the floor. "I am sorry. Please come hom

"Where were you?"I stopped by the stairs and slowly turned to my father. He had somehow gotten home before me, but to be fair, I wasn't sure how long I had been outside for."Out." "With Leone?"I swallowed hard, my eyes closing. "What do you think, Dad?"He took a step closer, his brows furrowing. "You were with him?"I could feel my anger heightening, my body slightly shaky."Why don't you answer that question for yourself, Dad? Were you hanging out, dancing under the rain, and stealing loving glances with the boy whom your father tried to kill years ago?"He rolled his eyes, then stepped away. "For goodness' sake, Ginevra. One meeting with him riled you up this much? Did you forget that we already talked about this?""Did we?" I asked, tears filling my eyes again. "Did we really talk about this, Dad?"He said nothing and grabbed a cigarette. "Whatever it is, Don Luciano gave me his word. It's only four days to the wedding. You need to...""You are a fool, Dad."He stopped, then t

Tears immediately stung the back of my eyes, and I broke eye contact, my chest slightly heaving. My fingers grabbed a handful of my dress, and for a long while, the silence stretched. What does anyone say to that? It is just as he had said ten years ago. I am pretty good at sweeping everything under a carpet in my mind. And it seemed it was exactly what I did. I buried the thoughts of the man who used to look at me like I held galaxies in my eyes being the same man who looked at me like I was the second worst thing after death."What do you want me to say to that?" I managed to say, lifting my eyes to meet his. He was leaning back, a glass of wine dangling elegantly on his fingers, his eyes cold. His eyes held mine, and he let out a small sigh before turning away."It was ten years ago," I said, pushing my hair back. "Forgetting might be the act of the brave by now."He laughed. Not a chuckle. Not a smirk. A deep, dark laugh that spoke more of danger than humor, one that made fear ru

It took me a few minutes, but I slowly accepted my fate. I was locked in this place with this man, and he looked like he didn't mind at all. I had two options. Stand here and hope that the door would open some time soon, or sit down and hope it opens.I slowly walked to the seat where I was before, my eyes briefly looking up to Leone. He was eating casually, his eyes fixed on his plate. Not even his phone was in sight."Is this your doing?"He looked up at me, then gently poured himself a glass of wine. "You think I would force myself to be in proximity with you?"I bit down on my lips. "You made sure to marry me."He set down his fork. "Because your father begged. There was no other way Brave Hearts would help out a competitor if we weren't secure that hurting us would hurt them too.""So I am leverage? Some sort of hostage to ensure that my father does not stab you in the back?""Yes," he said simply, then grabbed one of the cigarettes laid out on a small tray. He grabbed a lighter

I wasn't sure which one felt worse. I stood in front of the mantel where the jar that held mum's ashes still sat, my vision blurry with angry tears, my breath held as each second ticked by.
