Astrid's POV

The silence after Ethan left wasn’t comforting—it was loud and heavy. My fingers twitched in my lap, and the room suddenly felt too quiet to be safe. Liam sat across from me, arms folded, eyes watching the door like he expected it to swing open again.

"Are you okay?" He finally asked.

I leaned in slightly. “Keep your voice down,” I said.

He raised an eyebrow. “You think someone’s listening?”

“I don’t know,” I muttered. “But it wouldn’t surprise me.”

Liam gave the room a quick scan, then shifted forward in his seat. “You’re safe here.”

“No one’s safe here,” I replied, my voice low.

We sat in silence for a beat.

“I can’t believe he asked about the mark,” I whispered.

“He was going to eventually,” Liam said. “You had to know that.”

“I did. I just didn’t think it’d be this soon.”

He leaned back again. “You think he bought your answer?”

I didn’t answer right away. Because I didn’t know. Ethan hadn’t said much. But the way he looked at me—like he was picking apart every word—m

  • Deceitful Twin:A sister's shadow    Chapter 61: Everything I feared

Scarlett's POV I should have known better, but I just held onto the hope that maybe, just maybe, the Seer would prophesy wrongly or something. I don’t know what I thought exactly — that the truth could bend for me, or that the pretending could turn into reality if I just wished hard enough. I had rehearsed a hundred versions of what she might say. In none of them did she say that. But the moment she opened her mouth, I felt it in my chest. The cold and final moments. Like something inside me had snapped, quietly, cleanly, and wouldn’t go back together again. She didn’t point fingers. She didn’t call out names. But the words were clear. Too clear. Anyone who had been watching closely knew what she meant. And worse, River would know too. Maybe not now. Maybe not fully. But someday soon, it would all settle in him. The shape of it. The betrayal. The silence that followed her prophecy wasn’t soft. It was sharp. No one dared speak. No one even shifted. I stood there like a statue, every m

Astrid's POV Right after the Seer spoke, my heart began to pound so loudly I was so sure everyone could hear it. Not just beating — thudding, frantic and uneven, like it wanted to break out of my chest and run far from the truth that had just been spoken.I stood there, frozen, trying to breathe, but the air felt thick, like I was underwater and sinking fast. The kind of stillness that comes right before everything breaks.I looked at Scarlett. Her skin was paler than I’d ever seen it. Not the usual poised calm she wore like armor, but something rawer and shaken. Her lips parted slightly, but no words came. She just stared at River with wide, empty eyes — eyes that weren’t calculating or clever now, just afraid. And in that moment, I didn’t know whether to step back or run to him.River lay still where Ethan had gently lowered him, moments before the Seer’s prophecy. The vial had already done its work — his breathing soft, his body slack, as if sleeping through the storm we were all

  • Deceitful Twin:A sister's shadow    Chapter 59: D-Day

Ethan's POV Some days announce themselves with thunder. This one arrived with quiet dread. The sky was dull grey at dawn. No birds, no breeze, just a stillness that made the house feel like it was holding its breath. I sat at the edge of the bed for a long time, boots half-laced, staring at nothing. My shirt clung to my back, damp with sweat, though the morning air was cool. The day has finally begun. To be honest, the day’s activities moved so fast. First, I sent two of my most trusted men to bring the Seer — Dallan and Reeve. They didn’t ask questions. No one did. Not today.Next, I did a round check on everyone, just to be sure they were still breathing. I wish that was an exaggeration. With this kind of tension, it wouldn’t surprise me to find someone dead before the Seer even spoke a word. The house was bursting with activity — too much movement for how quiet everyone was. It wasn’t the usual morning chaos of servants and guards. This was different. It was controlled and tense,

  • Deceitful Twin:A sister's shadow    Chapter 58: Shadows of the Truth

Scarlett's POV I didn't need anyone to tell me to tell me that Ethan wasn't turned on for me. I hate to think that somehow, he just have seen Astrid and got turned on. I had to act like I was enjoying the whole process. Don't get me wrong, Ethan was really good in bed, but he wasn't just for me.I guess he felt it too because he quickly finished and almost left before I trapped him with my question.I asked him if he believed me, and he faltered. I knew deep in my bones that he doesn't trust me, and I could leave by it. *****The door clicked shut behind Ethan, its sound echoing louder than it should have in the stillness of the room. I remained seated on the edge of the bed, the warmth of his touch lingering on my hands, now cold and empty. He said he believed me. The words were there, but the conviction was absent. I saw it in his eyes—the hesitation, the doubt. He didn't believe me.I rose slowly, crossing the room to the mirror. My reflection stared back, composed and poised, b

  • Deceitful Twin:A sister's shadow    Chapter 57: — Wild imaginations

Ethan's POV"Fuck!" I said quietly to myself but with the intended force. Way to go, seriously, now Astrid will no longer see me as only an enemy, but a pervert and a cheat too. But the truth was that no matter how hard I tried, I could not stop staring at her boobs. They were so firm and so... inviting. I could barely control myself around her. I wanted to fling whatever white piece she used to cover herself and bend her down to her knees. But I couldn't, and I allowed the mental image leave my head immediately because she was not my woman. 'Keep telling yourself that' an inner mind whispered to me, and I cussed even more.I had to walk into my room and convinced myself that Astrid wasn't mine to own. I tried so hard, but I ended up jerking off to her name in the shower, but even that wasn't enough.I sighed and walked towards Scarlett's room, determined to remove every imprint of Astrid in my head through her. But I was wrong. The moment I entered into her room, I kissed her deeply and

  • Deceitful Twin:A sister's shadow    Chapter 56: Getting comfortable

Astrid's POV The bathroom was bigger than I expected. Too big, honestly. It had this pristine coldness to it, like no one had used it in months. The lights were warm-toned, the tiles spotless, but it still didn’t feel like mine. Nothing here really did.Still, I stood at the door for a moment, eyes sweeping over the sleek tub tucked against the wall, the silver fixtures glinting beneath the overhead light. A bathtub. A real one. Just a bath. And suddenly, that sounded like exactly what I needed.I stripped slowly because my limbs were sore and heavy, and my thoughts heavier. I peeled off each layer like they were made of memory—reminders of every second of the last twenty-four hours. The lies, the tension, Ethan’s silence, Liam’s reassuring eyes.I folded my clothes and placed them neatly on the small stool beside the sink. It felt stupid to care about wrinkles, but order helped. Folding things helped. It was something to do with my hands that didn’t involve pointing a finger or rais
