The airport felt colder than it should have.

Jack stood near the gate with his duffel bag beside him and his phone in his hand, staring at the departure board without really seeing it. He had already called Lela twice since leaving the house. The first time, he could hear her voice for only a few seconds before the emotion in his chest became too much. The second time, Lily had grabbed the phone and shouted, “Daddy!” so loudly that Jack had laughed despite himself.

Now he was alone again.

  • Decisions I made    A Different Fear

The next morning began with rain.It tapped softly against the bedroom window, steady enough to make the entire house feel quieter than usual. Lela woke before Jack and stayed beneath the blankets for a while, listening to it. She had always liked rain when she didn't have anywhere she needed to be. There was something comforting about knowing the world outside could be gray and restless while the little world inside their house remained warm and still. She turned onto her side and looked at Jack.He was asleep on his back, one hand resting across the empty space between them as though even in his sleep he expected to find her there. Lela smiled and reached over, lightly touching his fingers. His hand closed around hers without him opening his eyes."You awake?" he murmured."Yes.""Why?"She laughed softly."That's not how waking up works.""It should be."He opened one eye."Is everything okay?""Yes.""Babies okay?""I think so.""Leg?""Fine.""You're sure?""I'm sure."He opened

  • Decisions I made    The First Picture

The first picture of the twins was blurry.Lela knew that was normal. The technician had explained that they were still incredibly small, that there wasn't much to see yet, and that the image would become clearer at later appointments. But when the screen came alive and two tiny shapes appeared, Lela stopped breathing for a moment anyway. She stared at the monitor while the technician adjusted the wand and moved slowly across her abdomen, searching for the best angle. Jack sat beside her, holding her hand so tightly that she could feel his fingers trembling. He had tried to act calm since they arrived, making jokes in the waiting room and pretending he wasn't nervous, but the moment the first image appeared, all of that disappeared."There," the technician said softly. "There's one."Lela's eyes followed the screen."And there's your second."Jack leaned forward."That's really them?"The technician smiled."Yes."Lela swallowed. Two little shapes. Two tiny beginnings. Two lives that

  • Decisions I made    The First Plan

The first thing Jack did when they got home was pull a notebook out of the kitchen drawer.Lela watched him place it on the table with the seriousness of a man preparing for a military briefing. Lily was still talking about the babies in the back seat, repeating the words "two babies" every few minutes as though she was afraid someone might forget. Jack opened the notebook, clicked a pen, and wrote at the top of the first page in large letters: BABY PLAN. Lela stood across from him with her arms folded, trying not to laugh."You realize they're not coming tomorrow, right?""I know.""They're not even big enough to have fingers yet.""I know.""You don't need a tactical plan."Jack looked up."We're having twins.""Yes.""Two babies.""Yes.""At the same time."Lela finally laughed. "That's generally how twins work."Jack pointed at the notebook."Exactly. This requires organization."Lily climbed onto the chair beside him."Babies need milk."Jack nodded seriously."Correct.""Diapers

  • Decisions I made    Two Little Heartbeats

The next morning, Lela woke before the alarm. For several seconds she lay perfectly still, staring at the ceiling, trying to remember why she felt as though something had changed. Then she felt Jack's arm around her waist, heard his slow breathing beside her, and remembered. Twins. Two babies. Two heartbeats. Two tiny lives growing inside her. She turned her head slowly toward him and smiled when she saw him still asleep. There was something almost peaceful about his face when he slept, something that made him look younger than he did during the day. She reached over and lightly touched his cheek. Jack stirred but didn't wake, so she whispered, "You're going to be a dad to three kids."His eyes opened immediately."Three?"Lela laughed quietly. "You knew that last night.""I know." He blinked a few times and looked at her. "I'm just making sure this isn't one of those dreams where I wake up and find out we only have one baby and I haven't actually been promoted to professional diaper

  • Decisions I made    Twice the Heartbeat

The call came three days later, just as Lela was finishing breakfast. She sat at the kitchen table with Lily coloring beside her, while Jack stood at the counter making coffee, when her phone rang. She glanced at the screen and saw the doctor's office. Her stomach immediately tightened. “Hello?” she answered. The nurse asked if she had a moment to discuss her recent bloodwork, and Lela's eyes immediately went to Jack. He noticed the expression on her face and came over. “Yes,” Lela said carefully. “Is everything okay?” The nurse paused. “Your numbers are much higher than we expected for how early you are.” Lela frowned. “Higher?” Jack pulled out the chair beside her and sat down. “What does that mean?” she asked. The nurse explained that her pregnancy hormone levels were significantly elevated compared with what they would normally expect at this stage. It didn't automatically mean something was wrong, but the doctor wanted her to come in for an earlier ultrasound than planned. Lela s

  • Decisions I made    The First Appointment

The first few days after the pregnancy was confirmed were a strange mixture of joy and caution. Lela wanted to celebrate, but she was also afraid to let herself become too excited before the doctors could tell her exactly how her body was handling the pregnancy. She had learned the hard way that good news could come with complicated conditions, and this time she wasn't going to pretend she wasn't nervous. Jack understood. He didn't bombard her with questions or constantly ask whether she felt okay. Instead, he quietly rearranged his schedule so he could attend every appointment he was allowed to, made sure she ate regularly, and kept reminding her they didn't have to figure out the next nine months in one day. The pregnancy was still very early, and the doctors wanted to monitor her closely because of her previous leg injuries, surgeries, and the strain pregnancy could place on her body. Lela kept a notebook on the kitchen counter where she wrote down questions for her doctors. By the

  • Decisions I made    Dinner with my parents

"Okay," Dad said as he leaned back in his chair. "Let's talk about this Jack guy."I groaned."Do we have to?""Absolutely."Mom laughed."We definitely have to."I shook my head."There's really not much to tell."Dad pointed at me."Start with what you know."I thought about it for a moment."Wel

  • Decisions I made    Thursday Night

Thursday nights were usually predictable. Chris would have another dinner meeting with clients, another networking event, or another reason he couldn't be home. Over the years, I had stopped asking questions. Sometimes the meetings were legitimate, sometimes they weren't, and sometimes I simply did

  • Decisions I made    The Start

Ten years ago, my husband and I started having problems in our marriage. At first, they were the kind of problems that many couples face—arguments about money, stress from everyday life, and disagreements about priorities. We kept telling ourselves that things would get better, that we were just go
