The Third Birth

The first thing Emily noticed was the silence.

Not the ordinary silence that came after a storm, when the wind had finally exhausted itself and the world seemed to hold its breath. This was different. This was the silence of something being removed. The forest's sound vanished first. Then the distant hum of the town. Then the creaking of the Carter house beneath their feet. Even the beating of Emily’s own heart seemed to become impossibly far away.

She looked up.

The stars were gone.

  • Decisions I made    Two Names on the Wall

By Sunday morning, the secret had become the biggest piece of news in the family.Lela's phone had barely stopped vibrating since everyone left the night before. Her mother had called twice before breakfast. Her sister had sent photographs of twin nursery ideas. Victoria had apparently already started shopping because she sent Lela a picture of two tiny pairs of socks with the message, I couldn't help myself. Paul had called Jack to discuss college funds, which Jack found both hilarious and slightly terrifying because Paul had somehow managed to bring up college before they had even decided what color the nursery would be.And then there was Lily.Lily had taken her new role as big sister so seriously that she had apparently decided it was now her responsibility to announce the pregnancy to anyone who crossed her path.At breakfast, she stood on her chair and announced, "My mommy has two babies."Jack nearly choked on his coffee.Lela looked over her shoulder."Lily, sit down.""I am

  • Decisions I made    The Secret at the Table

Absolutely—I'll continue with Lela planning a special way to tell the whole family, while keeping the twins and her recovery central to the chapter. For the next several days, Lela carried a secret that grew increasingly hard to keep.It wasn't that she didn't want her family to know. Quite the opposite. She wanted to tell them so badly that, at times, she nearly picked up the phone and called everyone at once. She wanted to hear her mother's voice when she told her. She wanted to hear Paul gasp, because her father had a very particular way of reacting to big news that always made Lela laugh. She wanted to see her sister's face. She wanted Victoria to scream. She wanted to watch Jack's parents' faces when they realized their family would have three children. Most of all, she wanted Lily there when everyone found out, because Lily had already appointed herself the official big sister and seemed to believe announcing the news was one of her responsibilities. But Lela wanted to do it dif

  • Decisions I made    A Different Fear

The next morning began with rain.It tapped softly against the bedroom window, steady enough to make the entire house feel quieter than usual. Lela woke before Jack and stayed beneath the blankets for a while, listening to it. She had always liked rain when she didn't have anywhere she needed to be. There was something comforting about knowing the world outside could be gray and restless while the little world inside their house remained warm and still. She turned onto her side and looked at Jack.He was asleep on his back, one hand resting across the empty space between them as though even in his sleep he expected to find her there. Lela smiled and reached over, lightly touching his fingers. His hand closed around hers without him opening his eyes."You awake?" he murmured."Yes.""Why?"She laughed softly."That's not how waking up works.""It should be."He opened one eye."Is everything okay?""Yes.""Babies okay?""I think so.""Leg?""Fine.""You're sure?""I'm sure."He opened

  • Decisions I made    The First Picture

The first picture of the twins was blurry.Lela knew that was normal. The technician had explained that they were still incredibly small, that there wasn't much to see yet, and that the image would become clearer at later appointments. But when the screen came alive and two tiny shapes appeared, Lela stopped breathing for a moment anyway. She stared at the monitor while the technician adjusted the wand and moved slowly across her abdomen, searching for the best angle. Jack sat beside her, holding her hand so tightly that she could feel his fingers trembling. He had tried to act calm since they arrived, making jokes in the waiting room and pretending he wasn't nervous, but the moment the first image appeared, all of that disappeared."There," the technician said softly. "There's one."Lela's eyes followed the screen."And there's your second."Jack leaned forward."That's really them?"The technician smiled."Yes."Lela swallowed. Two little shapes. Two tiny beginnings. Two lives that

  • Decisions I made    The First Plan

The first thing Jack did when they got home was pull a notebook out of the kitchen drawer.Lela watched him place it on the table with the seriousness of a man preparing for a military briefing. Lily was still talking about the babies in the back seat, repeating the words "two babies" every few minutes as though she was afraid someone might forget. Jack opened the notebook, clicked a pen, and wrote at the top of the first page in large letters: BABY PLAN. Lela stood across from him with her arms folded, trying not to laugh."You realize they're not coming tomorrow, right?""I know.""They're not even big enough to have fingers yet.""I know.""You don't need a tactical plan."Jack looked up."We're having twins.""Yes.""Two babies.""Yes.""At the same time."Lela finally laughed. "That's generally how twins work."Jack pointed at the notebook."Exactly. This requires organization."Lily climbed onto the chair beside him."Babies need milk."Jack nodded seriously."Correct.""Diapers

  • Decisions I made    Two Little Heartbeats

The next morning, Lela woke before the alarm. For several seconds she lay perfectly still, staring at the ceiling, trying to remember why she felt as though something had changed. Then she felt Jack's arm around her waist, heard his slow breathing beside her, and remembered. Twins. Two babies. Two heartbeats. Two tiny lives growing inside her. She turned her head slowly toward him and smiled when she saw him still asleep. There was something almost peaceful about his face when he slept, something that made him look younger than he did during the day. She reached over and lightly touched his cheek. Jack stirred but didn't wake, so she whispered, "You're going to be a dad to three kids."His eyes opened immediately."Three?"Lela laughed quietly. "You knew that last night.""I know." He blinked a few times and looked at her. "I'm just making sure this isn't one of those dreams where I wake up and find out we only have one baby and I haven't actually been promoted to professional diaper

  • Decisions I made    The message

We had barely made it twenty feet into the mall before Mom was already pulling dresses off racks."Mom.""What?""We've been here two minutes.""And?""You already have six dresses."She looked down at the armful of clothes she was carrying."I do.""That's a problem.""No, it's called being prepar

  • Decisions I made    Questions

"Where is Jack taking you for dinner?" Mom asked as we walked toward the mall entrance.I smiled."Pier W."Mom stopped so fast I nearly walked right into her."What?"I laughed."Pier W."She just stood there staring at me."The Pier W?""Yes, Mom."For a moment she didn't say anything. Then she g

  • Decisions I made    Thursday Night

Thursday nights were usually predictable. Chris would have another dinner meeting with clients, another networking event, or another reason he couldn't be home. Over the years, I had stopped asking questions. Sometimes the meetings were legitimate, sometimes they weren't, and sometimes I simply did

  • Decisions I made    The Start

Ten years ago, my husband and I started having problems in our marriage. At first, they were the kind of problems that many couples face—arguments about money, stress from everyday life, and disagreements about priorities. We kept telling ourselves that things would get better, that we were just go
