Chapter 3

Author: Sweetie Moore
After that, Evelyn started seeing Julian more and more behind my back.

Julian told her he'd only left all those years ago because he'd gone overseas to make money for her medical treatment.

He also claimed he'd sent her countless messages afterward, but she'd never replied.

Evelyn didn't believe him at first.

Then Julian showed her screenshots of the messages, complete with timestamps.

That was when she started to waver.

She began to suspect someone had deliberately deleted them.

And back then, the only person constantly by her side had been me.

After she was discharged from the hospital, she'd also lost her phone.

I was the one who helped her get a new number.

Once suspicion took root, it didn't matter whether I was guilty or not.

No matter how many times I tried to explain, Evelyn only had one response.

"Then prove it."

But how was I supposed to find proof of something that had happened eight years ago?

Little by little, Evelyn started believing everything Julian told her.

And when she eventually learned that he'd supposedly become terminally ill while trying to earn money for her treatment, she made up her mind.

She wanted a divorce.

She wanted to help Julian complete everything on his bucket list before he died.

Thinking about it now, I let out a bitter laugh.

I had just dragged my suitcase through the front gate of the neighborhood when my phone chimed.

It was the custom notification tone I'd set for Evelyn.

I freed one hand and pulled out my phone.

She'd sent me two hundred dollars.

I didn't accept it.

Ever since she'd convinced herself that I'd manipulated my way into a relationship with her, she'd started using money to control me.

If I accepted anything from her, I was expected to do exactly what she said.

The last time, she'd sent me ten bucks for cigarettes.

I took it.

Then I refused to go pick Julian up for her.

One complaint from her to my employer, and I lost my job.

Sure enough, another message from Evelyn appeared almost immediately.

"Marcus, we've been married for eight years. It's not like I never cared about you."

"If you hadn't gone this far, I wouldn't have wanted things to end like this either."

"Use the money to get yourself a decent hotel."

"And apologize to Julian now so he can stop worrying."

Before I could reply, another notification popped up.

It was from Evelyn's old class group chat.

I'd attended one of their reunions before, and one of the guys had privately added me to their men's chat afterward.

Julian had just posted a photo.

On his hand was an enormous diamond ring.

'Evelyn said this is going to be my wedding ring when we get married in a couple of days. She bought it to cheer me up. What do you guys think?'

No one responded.

So I did.

'Not much. Tell Evelyn a diamond ring's kind of pointless at this stage. She'd be better off buying you a nice cemetery plot with a good view.'

Three seconds after I sent it, Evelyn started calling me nonstop.

I already knew exactly what had happened.

Julian had gone running to Evelyn to complain again.

And now she was calling to tear into me on his behalf.

It had happened far too many times over the past month.

Evelyn didn't believe the man she'd been married to for eight years.

She believed Julian instead.

The same man who had once walked out on her.

I gave a bitter laugh and declined the call.

Maybe she knew I wasn't going to answer this time.

Instead of calling again, she started bombarding me with texts.

"Marcus, you really disappoint me."

"You're just jealous because I bought Julian a diamond ring, aren't you?"

"Fine. Then I'll give you something else to be jealous about."

A string of photos followed.

A bottle of men's cologne that cost over a hundred dollars.

Designer shoes worth more than a thousand.

A high-end graphics card worth a few thousand dollars.

And an order confirmation for a luxury car worth well over a hundred thousand.

Evelyn used to hesitate over buying me a three-pack of cheap socks.

Now she was spending my money like crazy just to make Julian happy.

Maybe it was because I was so close to dying.

Instead of getting angry like I would've before, I felt strangely calm.

I typed back:

"I'm not really jealous."

"No matter how expensive any of it is, it'll all be getting buried with Julian in a month anyway."

Evelyn looked up at him.For the first time, doubt flickered in her eyes."Do you really love me?"Julian nodded firmly."Of course I do. I've dreamed about being with you all these years.""Then why didn't you ever come back from overseas?" Evelyn asked.Julian paused."I was working to earn money for your treatment."Evelyn pressed him again."When you couldn't reach me, shouldn't your first thought have been to keep trying until you did?"I couldn't help feeling surprised. So Evelyn was still capable of questioning him after all.Julian clearly hadn't expected her to suddenly start doubting him either. His expression turned wounded, and even his voice softened."Evelyn, why are you being so harsh with me today?""I know you're upset because Marcus died, but you can't just start doubting someone who loves you.""When you treat me like this, it really hurts."Evelyn stared at him blankly. Her pale lips parted slightly. In the end, she only said,"You should go."J

I figured our lives would probably never cross again.I'd assumed that even if Evelyn eventually found out I was dead, it wouldn't be until much later.I was wrong. It didn't take long at all.As the wedding approached, Julian kept insisting he was healthy enough to go through with the wedding as planned.Evelyn still wasn't convinced. She practically dragged him to the hospital for a checkup. While she waited for him to come out of the exam room, she wandered over to a bulletin board in the hallway out of boredom.A newly posted notice listed people the hospital wanted to thank. At first, Evelyn barely paid attention. Then her eyes landed on the section thanking body donors. And she saw my name. Her expression changed immediately.I'd thought she would dismiss it as a coincidence.Instead, she left Julian in the exam room and hurried straight to the front desk. She gave the nurse my name."Can I see him?"There was confusion and unease in her eyes. The nurse shook he

My coworker sighed."We tried to put in a good word for him too, but there was nothing we could do. The owner cares a lot more about an employee's personal conduct than their performance."After a few more polite words, he ended the call.Evelyn stood there in a daze. Her expression was blank. When she finally came back to herself, her eyes were red.She called me again.Still no answer.Julian stepped out of the room next door.He had clearly heard the entire conversation.Out of Evelyn's sight, his dark eyes flickered. Then he spoke softly."Marcus never told you he lost his job?""I could understand him hiding it from other people, but why would he hide something like that from his own wife?"That single question wiped away the guilt that had just appeared in Evelyn's eyes. She clenched her jaw."How did he become like this? He was never like this before."Julian picked up his phone."Maybe he always was.""Maybe he just hid it well because he wanted to get close

I'd deleted her number too.Evelyn finally lost her temper. She was just about to explode when her phone chimed. She hurried back to the messaging app, only to see a notification that the two-hundred-dollar transfer had been automatically refunded after going unclaimed for twenty-four hours. She froze. It seemed to finally dawn on her why I hadn't checked into a hotel."But there's no way he doesn't even have two hundred dollars on him, right?" I heard her mutter.I would've laughed if I still could.Unfortunately, I was already dead.If I hadn't been, I would've reminded her that every card I owned was in her hands. She'd even disabled all my credit accounts because she was worried I'd spend irresponsibly. She'd always kept a tight grip on my money.Even my monthly allowance had been calculated down to the money I spent on cigarettes.Forget two hundred dollars.I didn't have two cents to my name. She should've known that. But apparently, she didn't want to think about

"That can't be right. He only got shoved. How could he just stop breathing?"Someone nearby sounded confused.Others chimed in, saying I might have passed out and that someone should start CPR.Evelyn's expression turned complicated. Her brows drew together as she finally turned around and headed back toward the crowd surrounding me.She was almost there when her phone buzzed again.A message from Julian."Evelyn, come back. Hurry."The second she saw it, panic flashed across her face. She didn't look at me again. She turned and rushed out of the restaurant. She drove home at breakneck speed. The moment she reached the apartment, she started calling Julian's name as she threw open the door. For one second, the sight left me strangely dazed.Evelyn had once worried about me like that too.Years ago, when I was overseas on a business trip, my phone was stolen. Before I'd even had time to replace it, Evelyn showed up that very night, breathless and drenched in sweat. The
