Chapter 4

Author: Sweetie Moore
I thought about it for a moment, then added earnestly,

"You should spend more of your money on yourself."

But the message never went through.

A large red exclamation mark appeared beside it.

Evelyn had blocked me.

I put my phone away and decided to find somewhere to stay.

I'd originally considered swallowing my pride, apologizing, and using the two hundred dollars she'd sent me to get a hotel room.

But once she blocked me, I couldn't accept the transfer anymore.

Even that last two hundred dollars was gone.

I'd grown up in an orphanage.

I didn't have many friends to begin with.

When I was little, other kids used to beat me until I was bruised and bloody.

One day, Evelyn, wearing a frilly little dress, had scared them off.

Then she'd pressed a piece of candy into my hand to comfort me.

Maybe my childhood had been so bitter that the first taste of something sweet went straight to my heart.

After that, every memory I had of Evelyn carried that same sweetness.

So when I got into college, the first thing I did was move to the city where she lived.

She was the only person I knew here.

And that apartment was the only place I'd ever been able to think of as home.

I had nowhere else to go.

Building security made me leave the property several times before I finally found a spot nearby where I could spend the night.

The night air was freezing.

I checked my phone and saw that Julian had posted again.

It was a video of him dancing with Evelyn in a warm, brightly lit room.

Evelyn moved gracefully, every step polished and practiced.

She and Julian moved together with effortless familiarity.

At the end, Julian wrapped an arm around her waist and lifted her off the floor.

Then he glanced directly at the camera.

The smug challenge in his eyes was impossible to miss.

I knew the post was meant for me.

He wanted to make me angry.

The pattern had played out over and over again.

He'd post something only I could see.

I'd lose my temper and confront him.

Then Evelyn would just happen to show up and decide I'd gone there to threaten or bully Julian.

By the time I tried to show her proof, Julian would've already deleted the post.

And that only made me look like a liar.

It was one of the reasons my relationship with Evelyn had fallen apart so quickly over the past month.

But this time, I didn't care.

I just watched Evelyn dance, an ache spreading quietly through my chest.

We'd been married for eight years.

And I'd never known she could dance like that.

Once, I'd come across an old photo of her in ballet clothes and asked about it.

She'd only said, "I used to dance. I don't anymore."

I'd told her she looked beautiful and suggested she take it up again.

She'd suddenly flown into a rage and torn the photo to pieces.

For years, I'd thought my suggestion had somehow upset her.

Only now did I understand.

Maybe she'd stopped dancing because Julian was gone.

Maybe she'd gotten so angry because I'd accidentally touched on a memory that belonged to him.

She must have been happy now.

Happy enough that it apparently never occurred to her to wonder how a terminally ill man still had the energy to dance like that.

I didn't dwell on it.

I only had two days left.

By then, my entire body ached, and every breath had become difficult.

I curled up tightly beneath my blanket, shivering from cold and hunger as I felt my life draining away little by little.

Eventually, exhaustion dragged me into sleep.

I hadn't been asleep long when something hard struck me.

A coin.

"Huh. Marcus?"

Julian's fake-sweet voice drifted down to me.

"Sorry. I thought you were homeless."

I pushed my head out from under the blanket.

Julian was standing in front of me with Evelyn on his arm.

Evelyn looked down at me lying on the ground, then at the suitcase beside me.

Something complicated flickered through her eyes.

"Marcus, how long are you going to keep this up?"

Her voice turned impatient.

"I sent you money. Why are you sleeping out here?"

Evelyn looked up at him.For the first time, doubt flickered in her eyes."Do you really love me?"Julian nodded firmly."Of course I do. I've dreamed about being with you all these years.""Then why didn't you ever come back from overseas?" Evelyn asked.Julian paused."I was working to earn money for your treatment."Evelyn pressed him again."When you couldn't reach me, shouldn't your first thought have been to keep trying until you did?"I couldn't help feeling surprised. So Evelyn was still capable of questioning him after all.Julian clearly hadn't expected her to suddenly start doubting him either. His expression turned wounded, and even his voice softened."Evelyn, why are you being so harsh with me today?""I know you're upset because Marcus died, but you can't just start doubting someone who loves you.""When you treat me like this, it really hurts."Evelyn stared at him blankly. Her pale lips parted slightly. In the end, she only said,"You should go."J

I figured our lives would probably never cross again.I'd assumed that even if Evelyn eventually found out I was dead, it wouldn't be until much later.I was wrong. It didn't take long at all.As the wedding approached, Julian kept insisting he was healthy enough to go through with the wedding as planned.Evelyn still wasn't convinced. She practically dragged him to the hospital for a checkup. While she waited for him to come out of the exam room, she wandered over to a bulletin board in the hallway out of boredom.A newly posted notice listed people the hospital wanted to thank. At first, Evelyn barely paid attention. Then her eyes landed on the section thanking body donors. And she saw my name. Her expression changed immediately.I'd thought she would dismiss it as a coincidence.Instead, she left Julian in the exam room and hurried straight to the front desk. She gave the nurse my name."Can I see him?"There was confusion and unease in her eyes. The nurse shook he

My coworker sighed."We tried to put in a good word for him too, but there was nothing we could do. The owner cares a lot more about an employee's personal conduct than their performance."After a few more polite words, he ended the call.Evelyn stood there in a daze. Her expression was blank. When she finally came back to herself, her eyes were red.She called me again.Still no answer.Julian stepped out of the room next door.He had clearly heard the entire conversation.Out of Evelyn's sight, his dark eyes flickered. Then he spoke softly."Marcus never told you he lost his job?""I could understand him hiding it from other people, but why would he hide something like that from his own wife?"That single question wiped away the guilt that had just appeared in Evelyn's eyes. She clenched her jaw."How did he become like this? He was never like this before."Julian picked up his phone."Maybe he always was.""Maybe he just hid it well because he wanted to get close

I'd deleted her number too.Evelyn finally lost her temper. She was just about to explode when her phone chimed. She hurried back to the messaging app, only to see a notification that the two-hundred-dollar transfer had been automatically refunded after going unclaimed for twenty-four hours. She froze. It seemed to finally dawn on her why I hadn't checked into a hotel."But there's no way he doesn't even have two hundred dollars on him, right?" I heard her mutter.I would've laughed if I still could.Unfortunately, I was already dead.If I hadn't been, I would've reminded her that every card I owned was in her hands. She'd even disabled all my credit accounts because she was worried I'd spend irresponsibly. She'd always kept a tight grip on my money.Even my monthly allowance had been calculated down to the money I spent on cigarettes.Forget two hundred dollars.I didn't have two cents to my name. She should've known that. But apparently, she didn't want to think about

"That can't be right. He only got shoved. How could he just stop breathing?"Someone nearby sounded confused.Others chimed in, saying I might have passed out and that someone should start CPR.Evelyn's expression turned complicated. Her brows drew together as she finally turned around and headed back toward the crowd surrounding me.She was almost there when her phone buzzed again.A message from Julian."Evelyn, come back. Hurry."The second she saw it, panic flashed across her face. She didn't look at me again. She turned and rushed out of the restaurant. She drove home at breakneck speed. The moment she reached the apartment, she started calling Julian's name as she threw open the door. For one second, the sight left me strangely dazed.Evelyn had once worried about me like that too.Years ago, when I was overseas on a business trip, my phone was stolen. Before I'd even had time to replace it, Evelyn showed up that very night, breathless and drenched in sweat. The
