Chapter 1

Summer Yates' impatient voice pierced through my bone conduction earpiece. "Stop playing dead! Just save your oxygen and start swimming up already! Quit banging around down there. You're ruining the livestream."

I stopped knocking.

In the pitch-black darkness 300 meters below, only the blinking red light on my dive mask cut through the void.

The display read: [Primary Oxygen Line Pressure: Zero. Emergency Reserve Remaining: 3 minutes 15 seconds.]

Summer's shrill voice urged me to start swimming through the comm. "Carter Lawson! Are you deaf?! The sponsor's camera is pointed right at you! Turn around right now and swim toward the surface!

"Make sure you look good doing it. Show everyone the ultimate willpower of a professional diver! If you dare screw up Zachary's documentary on camera, you and I are done when you get back!"

Listening to that familiar, nauseating voice, I did not cry or beg for mercy as I had in my past life.

The temperature at 300 meters was barely above freezing. Yet, my heart felt colder than this water itself.

I glanced down at the multi-function tactical display on my wrist. The oxygen countdown had already dropped.

[2 minutes 45 seconds].

I knew that for a human body, swimming from 300 meters below without oxygen and without any decompression protocol was not an 'extreme challenge'; it was a guaranteed death sentence.

The water pressure at that depth would instantly crush my internal organs into pulp.

Summer and Zachary Gibson were not ignorant. They knew exactly what would happen. They wanted me dead, and they wanted my death to be valuable, to bring explosive traffic to Zachary's documentary.

I took a deep breath of the stale air remaining in my mask and forced myself to stay calm. Instead of turning to swim upward, I raised my right hand, still encased in the heavy, pressure-resistant glove, and tapped the hidden control valve on the side of my helmet three times.

With a beeping sound, the independent black box was activated.

"High-definition audio and video recording in progress."

Only I knew that this latest prototype dive suit had a built-in independent storage module that was not connected to the surface vessel.

It would record everything that was about to happen.

Summer asked, "Carter? What the hell are you doing? Why aren't you moving?"

Zachary's voice cut in, laced with condescending irritation. "Do you have any idea how many followers the livestream just lost because you're stalling? Are you trying to ruin this?"

Faced with overwhelming evidence, Jason's face turned ghostly pale, and his legs gave out beneath him. He tried to throw away the check and appointment letter to distance himself, but two tactical officers immediately pinned him down."Take them away! You're charged with money laundering, falsifying national data, and being an accessory to attempted murder. Your company is finished today!" the officer said coldly.Hearing those words, Summer completely broke down. She dragged her paralyzed lower body across the floor like a worm, crawling toward my feet and desperately clutching my military boots as she sobbed and begged."Honey! Carter! I was wrong! I know that now! Zachary forced me into it! He wanted your hazard pay; he wanted to be a director! For the sake of our marriage, please forgive me! I don't want to go to prison!"I looked down at this woman who had once made me give her everything before pushing me into the abyss, and there was not a shred of sympathy in my eyes. I rai

Just as Summer's fingers were about to touch that 80-million-dollar check, the ballroom doors were violently kicked open from the outside. The massive crash drowned out all the applause, and everyone's attention instantly snapped toward the entrance. Two squads of fully armed tactical officers in riot gear stormed into the ballroom like black lightning, moving with flawless precision as they instantly sealed every exit, hallway, and media broadcast van."Police! Everyone, stay where you are and don't move!" the lead officer barked, his command silencing the entire room.In that deathly stillness and under the shocked gaze of fifty million livestream viewers, I strode down the red carpet wearing a crisp dark blue uniform that represented the nation's highest-ranking oceanic command authority.A brilliant medal of the highest honor shone on my chest. My left hand was covered by a black tactical glove, and the scars on my face looked cold and lethal under the ballroom's brilliant li

Three days later, the ballroom of the city's most luxurious five-star hotel had been rented out by the sponsor company and decorated in extravagant black and white. This large-scale press conference and funeral service attracted over 100 mainstream media outlets from across the country, and online viewership across all streaming platforms exceeded 50 million. The large screens displayed my work photos on a loop, but they were accompanied by harsh labels like 'impulsive,' 'psychotic,' and 'cautionary tale.'At the center of the ballroom, Summer wore an expensive designer black dress and an elegant black veil, sitting in a custom electric wheelchair. She held a pristine white handkerchief, periodically dabbing at nonexistent tears in the corners of her eyes as she choked out her story to the cameras."Even though Carter committed an unforgivable crime and nearly killed us, he was still my husband once. I'm a disabled single mother now, but I'll stay strong and raise Kendra..."That

While the entire internet was celebrating this despicable pair's touching love story and miraculous survival, I sat aboard an unmarked military transport plane, secretly flying back home under the highest-level classified escort from the National Research Institute. My left hand had lost the tip of my pinky finger to deep-sea frostbite, and my face bore a few shallow scars from the reef rocks, but none of that mattered. What mattered was that I had not only brought back the core energy sample that would help our nation's deep-sea technology break through a decade-long bottleneck, but I had also brought back the independent black box loaded with ironclad evidence. The plane landed at a military airfield, where the top leadership of the NOA and the head of military intelligence personally met me on the runway."Carter, you've been through hell. The sample you brought back is priceless," Aaron Parker, the senior director, said, gripping my hand tightly with tears welling in his eyes.

Two weeks later, a carefully orchestrated press conference was underway in the luxury VIP suite of one of the country's top private hospitals.Summer sat in a wheelchair wearing a hospital gown, her legs covered with a thick cashmere blanket. Her makeup had been done to create a fragile, sickly look, with tears clinging to the corners of her eyes.Zachary stood behind her in a sharp, tailored suit, wearing the latest invisible hearing aids, looking devoted and resolute.Dozens of media outlets crowded the hospital room, with their cameras flashing nonstop."Ms. Yates, can you tell us what exactly happened down there? Why did Carter cut the cable?" one reporter eagerly asked.Summer immediately covered her face and let out a piercing sob, as if she had been deeply traumatized. "It was Carter... He went crazy! He'd been working in the deep sea for years and had developed severe deep-sea psychosis!"She continued her tearful accusation. "When the pipeline repair failed, not only did

Time inside the probe seemed to stand still, with only my racing heartbeat and the faint hiss of the oxygen generator echoing in my ears. After what felt like an eternity, a deep metallic clang rang out from outside the chamber, followed by the blinding beam of a powerful searchlight cutting through the deep-sea darkness and illuminating the probe's porthole.I forced myself to crawl up and peered through the scratched glass.A massive, state-of-the-art deep-sea submersible was slowly approaching me.It was a neighboring country's research vessel! They had clearly picked up my highest-level SOS signal and were the closest responders. The submersible extended its mechanical arm and began cutting through the probe's exterior. The moment the hatch was forced open, several crew members in heavy dive suits quickly pulled me into their decompression chamber."Goodness, there's actually someone down here!" one crew member exclaimed as he quickly fitted me with a high-pressure oxygen mas
