Chapter 3

Author: Ink Brimm
Finn's POV

I went home. The moment I stepped inside, I could feel the tension in the living room.

My older brother, Graham Campbell, spoke up. "The people handling my background check called today. With all this bad publicity surrounding our family, they're probably going to put my security clearance on hold."

He looked up at me, his expression cold. "Happy now?"

My mother, Melinda Valor, immediately started laying into me. "Do you have any idea how hard your brother worked for this opportunity? And now, of all times, you have to go and get yourself caught up in a scandal!"

I stood in the middle of the living room, soaked to the skin, water still dripping from my clothes. "Mom, the video's fake. It was made with AI. I'm the victim here."

"Enough!" my father, Luke Campbell, snapped. "Who cares if it's real or fake? It's all over the Internet, and everyone believes it!"

He pointed to a sheet of paper on the coffee table. "Your mother and I have talked it over. There's only one way to fix this. You're going to put out a statement admitting that it's you in the video.

"Say you've been under a lot of stress lately, that you weren't in the right state of mind, and that you made a stupid mistake by posting it."

He paused, looking completely unapologetic. "If we chalk it up to mental health problems, people will move on, and your brother's background check won't be affected."

I stared at them in disbelief. "And you'll need to give us 200 thousand dollars to cover the PR costs," Graham chimed in, his tone matter-of-fact. "You're the one who caused this mess. You can't expect the rest of us to pay to clean it up."

I looked at my family. Dad was calculating, Mom had always played favorites, and Graham only cared about himself.

"I'm not signing anything." My voice was quiet but firm. "I'm not going to admit to being mentally ill, and I'm not giving you any money."

Just then, someone knocked on the front door. "Mr. and Mrs. Campbell? Is Finn home?"

Wanda walked in. Her shoulders were still damp from the rain, and she looked like she'd rushed over. When she saw me, she visibly relaxed. She hurried toward me and reached out to brush the wet hair away from my face.

"Finn, enough already. We couldn't find you after you left the restaurant. Everett and I were worried sick."

I stepped back, avoiding her hand. "So, you finally remembered me after you were done hanging out with him?"

Her hand froze in midair, and she frowned. "Finn, I heard everything from outside. Your parents are right. You need to stop being so selfish.

"You're not just hurting yourself. You're dragging your brother down with you. Just do what your dad says so we can put this whole thing to rest. I'll handle the rest."

I looked at her, then at my parents, who sat on the couch waiting for my answer without a shred of sympathy.

"Fine." I nodded, my voice barely above a whisper.

Then I turned and walked over to the drawer where I kept my personal documents and our family records. I took out my birth certificate and identification papers.

"Finn, what are you doing?" Dad stood up, looking surprised.

I held the documents in my hand and faced them. "I'm not signing anything, and I'm not giving you a cent. But I won't stick around and embarrass you either. I'm changing my registered address and cutting ties with this family. From now on, we'll go our separate ways."

Wanda called after me, sounding genuinely alarmed for the first time. "Finn! Where are you going? Changing your official address is a huge hassle! Don't do anything rash!"

I didn't look back. Clutching my documents, I rushed out the front door.

It was pouring outside. I thought of the old apartment my grandmother had left me. It was the only place I had left to go.

I called a cab and headed to the old apartment complex on the outskirts of town. But when the cab pulled up and I looked toward that familiar third-floor window, my blood ran cold.

She didn't say a word. The court handed down its verdict.Vivian was sentenced to 18 months in prison. Mike got a year. Everett got two years. Wanda avoided prison, but her law license was revoked. She was also ordered to compensate me for the emotional distress she'd caused and issue a public apology for the damage she'd done to my reputation.I was satisfied with the outcome. Leaked Chats Expose Everything!"The post included not only the awful things she'd said in the private dining room but also messages proving that Everett had been playing her for a fool."Wanda, you've been a lawyer for years. You should know how important professional ethics and personal integrity are."One of your clients just called and demanded that you be taken off their case. They said they couldn't trust someone who'd sell out her own boyfriend to h

Finn's POVThat afternoon, I'd just left Nathaniel's law firm when someone I recognized came rushing out from behind a flower bed at the corner. Before I could react, he grabbed my arm. "Finn! I've been looking everywhere for you!"Mike practically lunged at me, his voice cracking. I didn't push him away or make a scene. I just stopped and looked down at his hand gripping my sleeve. He was still wearing the black friendship bracelet we'd bought together. It was old and worn now."Let go," I said evenly.Mike froze, clearly caught off guard by my reaction. In his mind, I was still the same fool who'd always covered for him without a second thought and lent him money without ever asking for it back.Still, he released my arm and pulled a stack of crumpled pages from his bag. "Finn, I'm sorry. I know I messed up. I really do..."He tried to shove the pages into my hands."So, you came to apologize?" I took them without opening them."Yes! Finn, please, just hear me out." Mike ru

Third-Person POVThe police moved faster than Finn had expected. Just five days after opening the investigation, they arrested Vivian at her home.Apparently, she'd been playing an online game when they showed up. She'd even been bragging to her teammates."What's there to worry about? It's just a video. You seriously think that idiot Finn can get me thrown in jail? Please. I know what I'm doing. I deleted everything. There's no way anyone's finding a trace of it."But when the officers showed her the original files they'd recovered from the cloud servers, she was speechless. All the footage and project files she'd been so sure were gone for good had been recovered. So had her conversations with Everett. And now it was all evidence against her.Even in the interrogation room, Vivian kept making excuses. "Officer, it was just a prank! We were only messing around! Besides, Finn and I have known each other since we were kids. Why would I want to hurt him? I was just… I was trying to

Finn's POVWhile I was busy preparing for the lawsuit, I heard some news about my family. Not from them, though. I found out through someone else.I'd gone to the courthouse that day to file some additional paperwork when I ran into an old classmate who worked for the government."Finn Campbell? Hey... How've you been holding up?" He seemed to have trouble meeting my eyes."Pretty good. Why?""Well... I heard your brother Graham got the results of his background check."That caught my attention, though I didn't let it show. "Oh, really?""Yeah... Apparently, he didn't pass. They haven't said exactly why, but word is that someone in his family is involved in a major online scandal and a criminal investigation."I heard the police opened a case over that video of you. And apparently, your brother's been linked to some suspicious money transfers too..."My old classmate lowered his voice. "Finn, don't take it too hard. Nobody saw this coming."I nodded and gave him a polite smil

Finn's POVThe next day, I went to Nathaniel Cross' law firm, just as we'd arranged.Nathaniel had been a year ahead of me in college and had since made a name for himself as an attorney. He looked taken aback when he saw me. "Finn, you..."I was probably a lot calmer than he'd expected. I certainly didn't look like someone who'd just been dragged through the mud online, abandoned by his family, and betrayed by his girlfriend."I've long heard of your reputation, Nathaniel." I sat down and pulled a USB drive and a thick stack of printed messages from my bag. "Here's all the evidence I've gathered."Nathaniel took the documents and started going through them. The more he read, the deeper his frown grew. "Vivian Clark... She's your childhood friend, right? And Mike Crain is your best friend? Then there's this Everett guy..."He looked up at me, his expression serious. "What about your girlfriend, Wanda Beckham? How was she involved?""She was the last straw," I said calmly. "She
