Chapter 4

Author: Ink Brimm
Finn's POV

The lights were on. There were new decorations in the windows.

I raced upstairs and stopped outside the apartment. I could hear familiar laughter coming from inside.

My hands shook as I pulled out my key and slipped it into the lock. It wouldn't turn. The locks had been changed.

Just then, the door opened. Everett was leaning against the doorframe with a half-empty can of beer in his hand. He broke into a grin when he saw me. "Well, look who it is. Finn! What brings you here at this hour?"

I looked past him into the apartment and froze.

Grandma's old wooden cabinet was gone. So were the rocking chair by the window and the landscape painting she'd framed herself. Even the old radio she'd never wanted to replace was missing.

The whole apartment had been redecorated, with nothing left to show that Grandma had ever lived there.

"Where's my grandmother's stuff?"

Everett raised an eyebrow, looking completely unconcerned. "Oh, that stuff? It was old and taking up space, so I had someone come haul it away. It was all junk anyway. No point keeping it."

My nails dug into my palms. "What are you doing in my apartment?"

Everett pulled a key out of his pocket and waved it in front of me. "Wanda gave it to me. She said no one was using the place anyway, so I could stay here while I study for my exams… Wait, Finn. You didn't know?"

I felt like I'd been hit over the head.

Three years ago, Wanda had insisted on keeping a spare key because she was worried I'd lose mine. I'd never imagined she'd use it to do something like this.

Just then, hurried footsteps echoed through the stairwell. Wanda came rushing up the stairs, out of breath.

When she saw us facing off, she hurried over and stepped in front of Everett, shielding him from me. "Finn, what are you doing here? It's the middle of the night! When are you going to stop making a scene?"

I stared at her and pointed toward the apartment, my voice shaking. "Wanda, my grandmother left me this apartment! What gives you the right to let Everett move in without asking me? And why did you change the locks?"

Wanda frowned slightly. "Everett's studying for his graduate school entrance exams, and this place is close to the library. I'm just letting him stay here for a few days. And the old locks were worn out. They weren't safe, so I had them replaced."

She said it like it was the most reasonable thing in the world.

"What about my grandmother's things?" I stared at her.

Wanda paused for a moment before answering calmly. "It was all old furniture and decorations. They were just collecting dust. Everett was doing you a favor by getting rid of everything. Now the place will be more comfortable when you move back in."

I almost laughed. "This is my grandmother's apartment. Tell Everett to get out."

Wanda grabbed me by the shoulder and pushed me away from the door. "Finn, look at yourself! You're hysterical. You can't even control your emotions."

She pulled out her phone and sent me 2,000 dollars. "Stop making a scene. Just get a hotel room nearby for tonight."

At that moment, I almost wanted to laugh.

I had ended up being the one person nobody seemed to want around. My family had turned their backs on me. The woman I loved had treated me like I meant nothing. And the people I'd trusted most had turned that trust against me.

"Fine." I nodded. "I'll leave. Enjoy your stay."

I turned and slowly made my way down the stairs. Behind me, the security door slammed shut.

The rain had stopped. But the anger I'd been holding back was finally starting to boil over.

I pulled out my phone and called the police. "Hello, I'd like to report a crime. Someone broke into my home unlawfully, and they’re suspected of disorderly conduct.

"They also made and spread deepfake porn of me. It’s defamation; they violated my right of publicity and ruined my reputation. And I have evidence."

They said they couldn't trust someone who'd sell out her own boyfriend to h

Finn's POVThat afternoon, I'd just left Nathaniel's law firm when someone I recognized came rushing out from behind a flower bed at the corner. Before I could react, he grabbed my arm. "Finn! I've been looking everywhere for you!"Mike practically lunged at me, his voice cracking. I didn't push him away or make a scene. I just stopped and looked down at his hand gripping my sleeve. He was still wearing the black friendship bracelet we'd bought together. It was old and worn now."Let go," I said evenly.Mike froze, clearly caught off guard by my reaction. In his mind, I was still the same fool who'd always covered for him without a second thought and lent him money without ever asking for it back.Still, he released my arm and pulled a stack of crumpled pages from his bag. "Finn, I'm sorry. I know I messed up. I really do..."He tried to shove the pages into my hands."So, you came to apologize?" I took them without opening them."Yes! Finn, please, just hear me out." Third-Person POVThe police moved faster than Finn had expected. Just five days after opening the investigation, they arrested Vivian at her home.Apparently, she'd been playing an online game when they showed up. She'd even been bragging to her teammates."What's there to worry about? It's just a video. You seriously think that idiot Finn can get me thrown in jail? Please. I know what I'm doing. I deleted everything. There's no way anyone's finding a trace of it."But when the officers showed her the original files they'd recovered from the cloud servers, she was speechless. All the footage and project files she'd been so sure were gone for good had been recovered. So had her conversations with Everett. And now it was all evidence against her.Even in the interrogation room, Vivian kept making excuses. "Officer, it was just a prank! We were only messing around! Besides, Finn and I have known each other since we were kids. Why would I want to hurt him? I was just… I was trying to

Finn's POVWhile I was busy preparing for the lawsuit, I heard some news about my family. Not from them, though. I found out through someone else.I'd gone to the courthouse that day to file some additional paperwork when I ran into an old classmate who worked for the government."Finn Campbell? Hey... How've you been holding up?" He seemed to have trouble meeting my eyes."Pretty good. Why?""Well... I heard your brother Graham got the results of his background check."That caught my attention, though I didn't let it show. "Oh, really?""Yeah... Apparently, he didn't pass. They haven't said exactly why, but word is that someone in his family is involved in a major online scandal and a criminal investigation."I heard the police opened a case over that video of you. And apparently, your brother's been linked to some suspicious money transfers too..."My old classmate lowered his voice. "Finn, don't take it too hard. Nobody saw this coming."I nodded and gave him a polite smil

Finn's POVThe next day, I went to Nathaniel Cross' law firm, just as we'd arranged.Nathaniel had been a year ahead of me in college and had since made a name for himself as an attorney. He looked taken aback when he saw me. "Finn, you..."I was probably a lot calmer than he'd expected. I certainly didn't look like someone who'd just been dragged through the mud online, abandoned by his family, and betrayed by his girlfriend."I've long heard of your reputation, Nathaniel." I sat down and pulled a USB drive and a thick stack of printed messages from my bag. "Here's all the evidence I've gathered."Nathaniel took the documents and started going through them. The more he read, the deeper his frown grew. "Vivian Clark... She's your childhood friend, right? And Mike Crain is your best friend? Then there's this Everett guy..."He looked up at me, his expression serious. "What about your girlfriend, Wanda Beckham? How was she involved?""She was the last straw," I said calmly. "She
