"As long as you are taken off from that position," Annie said while slowly drawling the end of her words, "then that position will fall back to my hand."

Jane stared at her for a few seconds before quietly sighing. At this point, she truly did not understand what Annie wanted her to say. Every answer seemed wrong in the girl's eyes and even though she tried to find the words that could make the problem less glaring, it seems to work the opposite way to Annie's eyes.

When they reached the staircase, Vanessa was already standing near the landing with her arms crossed, speaking to one of the maids who looked both nervous and apologetic. The moment she heard footsteps approaching, she turned around. Upon seeing Victor walking beside Madam Sayor, genuine surprise flashed across her face before it quickly disappeared behind a faint frown."You are usually late," she remarked, raising a brow. "Is there a change in the wind for you to suddenly arrive on time?"Victor had barely parted his lips before Madam Sayor beat him to it."Oh, let Victor do as he pleases." She waved a dismissive hand toward her granddaughter before gently patting Victor's arm. "You cannot possibly understand how difficult it is for someone who cannot see to arrive precisely on time."Vanessa rolled her eyes but wisely held her tongue.Jane, however, quietly lowered her gaze. She knew Madam Sayor had spoken with nothing but kindness. Every word had come from genuine concern, meant o

Whatever, was it even her business? Once morning arrives she will go to the train station, she heard that with the newly built train it would quickly bring her to a faraway place, far away enough that it would take weeks, no, even months before anyone could find her. Somewhere nobody knew her name. Somewhere Victor's shadow could never reach.Slowly, Jane looked down at the coins in her pocket.Truthfully ever since she was taken by the kidnappers and sold off, she had always kept some money hidden on her person. It wasn't a lot but it wasn't little either. It was actually enough for her to buy a ticket and a wagon ride to leave. The money had always been her emergency fund, always prepared for this exact kind of situation, always waiting for the day she would finally have the courage to run. Over the years she had become almost obsessive about it. Whenever she earned even the smallest amount, she would secretly add to it. Whenever she spent even a single coin, she would immediately

Noticing how something was about to turn into a dangerous fight, Julius stepped in almost immediately between his sister and Victor. He hesitated as he looked toward Vanessa before slowly turning his head back toward Victor. There was fear in his expression, not only because of the anger radiating from Victor, but because Julius could tell that something had changed in him. The Victor standing before them now wasn't the same Victor who had calmly walked out of the burning manor. His presence had become heavier, and even without being able to see his eyes clearly, Julius could feel the pressure coming from him. With great difficulty, he finally managed to speak, although his voice was as quiet as the wind."We can't find her.""You can't find her?"Victor repeated the words, not because he hadn't heard them properly, but because of how absurd they sounded to him. His fingers slowly curled into a fist, tightening until his knuckles cracked. Vanessa noticed the movement from the corner o

The scrambling servants who had managed to survive tended to those who were in a far more critical situation. Some had their hands completely bitten off, while others had gotten away with only a few scratches across their bodies. Blood covered the ground, mixing with the dirt, ash, and broken pieces of furniture that had been carried outside in the chaos. Some servants were sitting against the walls while others were helping their wounded friends stay conscious, tearing pieces from their own clothes to use as makeshift bandages. There were even some who simply remained seated on the ground, staring blankly at the burning manor as though their minds hadn't yet caught up with what had happened inside. Nobody knew how many had died, and nobody dared to count. There were simply too many bodies left behind. The entrance of the manor was now spewing red flames, the fire spreading through the wooden structure and climbing toward the upper floors. Smoke filled the air, making some of the serv

  • Defy Me If You Can   In The Fire-IV

Knocking on the door had no use. Jane, who had just dangerously avoided the attack, was now surrounded by an even bigger problem, the burning fire. It was all around her, ready to eat her alive, and in that moment of panic, she could only look at the window and grit her teeth. The heat was becoming unbearable. Every breath she took felt like it was burning the inside of her lungs, while the thick black smoke made it harder to see anything clearly. The walls around her were already covered with flames, and the wooden floor beneath her feet had started to crack from the intense heat. There was no way out.The door was locked.Madam Sayor was behind her.And the only other escape was the window. It’s either dying from Madam Sayor or dying from falling. Either way was bad as the others, but with jumping she had the chance of surviving; even if it was only for a very little time.Jane looked down at the window. It was high.Far too high. Her stomach twisted just thinking about it.But stay

Running backward, Jane tried to avoid the fire and quickly turned to the door, only to see it already closed. Her eyes widened in alarm. Did Vanessa not see that she hadn’t escaped? Maybe she had left thinking that she followed suit! Maybe Vanessa had assumed that Jane was right behind her and had already made it outside.Jane’s breathing became heavier as she stared at the closed door, her mind refusing to accept what was happening. There was no way she could be trapped inside here. Not with the fire spreading so quickly around her.Her hands scrambled to open the door, but no matter how much she tried to turn the doorknob, she could only hear a cold sound of click. She tried again, twisting it harder this time, but the door refused to move. She also stopped holding onto the doorknob as her hand stung from the heat that wrapped around the doorknob. She quickly pulled her hand toward her chest and stared at her palm. It was already beginning to redden from the heat. Jane swallowed har

The butler pulled from his pocket a jingling sound of metals. She looked to saw the large circular metal that had keys all around the place, jingling in a different color. He seemed to be a little flustered as he tried to choose from between the keys the one that was by far the brightest streak of

Day or night, Jane couldn't tell anymore. All she know was that she had been moved from one place to another. Sometimes alone in a carriage or with so many people in a room. For some reason, her eyes were kept tied with the cloth with no one ever letting her open her eyes at all. But for now, she s

“Where are you?”The sound of thunder shook Jane’s trembling body even worse. She was already cold from the rain soaking through her clothes, dripping down her skin, and that gentle voice made it worse. Like a snake's, his voice slithered through the air, coaxing, as if he was simply trying to lure
