Chapter 7

Author: The Evil Villain
I carried Nathan as soon as I heard that and bolted from the cellar, rushing straight out of the ancestral home.

Under the faint glow of the streetlight at the village entrance, a black Bentley was parked.

I recognized that as Henry's car. A few muscular men in black suits had gathered around a villager, questioning him in gruff tones.

I immediately pulled Nathan close and ducked into the nearby waist-high cornfield. We crouched on the damp ground, and through the gaps between the corn stalk

That light was so blinding that I couldn't open my eyes.Only one Wanda lay on the hospital bed when I opened my eyes. She slowly lifted her eyelids, her gaze carrying the tenderness of World A and the cool, keen edge of World B. She looked at me, then at Nathan in my arms, a torrent of memories stirring in her eyes. She spoke up then, her voice raspy. "I remember everything, Christian…"She remembered meeting me, Nathan's birth, and the five years of her life that Henry had tampered with. She was Wanda—the whole, complete Wanda.Yet after the overwhelming relief came a new layer of worry—the fusion had complications. She often endured severe headaches and sometimes drifted into brief spells of absent-mindedness—the memories of World B colliding inside her head, causing her to react to me with instinctual fear. The doctor explained that it was post-traumatic stress and that she would need time to recover, but to me, this was already the best ending I could have hoped for. My w

Nathan, Wanda from World B, and I finally woke up in front of the family cemetery in World A. It was still before dawn, and a cold, fine rain was falling. Grandma's tombstone remained intact, with wet spots of mud scattered across it. Everything was finally over.Nathan hugged me tightly around the neck and asked softly, "Are we going home now, Daddy?" I nodded firmly and looked over at Wanda beside me.Wanda from World B looked around in a daze, her hair soaked by the rain and her gaze vacant. She had truly stepped into a world that wasn't hers for the very first time.I was trembling as I dialed my real assistant's number on the way back to the city. "Where have you been? You haven't answered your phone or been seen for three days! Your wife is missing as well! We're all beside ourselves with worry, Mr. Lister!"I instantly felt my heart sink. I immediately called my lawyer and the bank to confirm that my identity, my company, and the record of my 75 million winnings were sti

In order to protect Nathan, I let them tie me up again and throw me into the trunk of the Bentley. The car jolted along the way, finally coming to a stop at the foot of the family cemetery hill south of the city. They dragged me out without a shred of gentleness and shoved me toward the graves.Grandma was right there, leaning against a tombstone. She was so thin that she looked like nothing but bones, as if the slightest breeze could make her fall apart, but her eyes were unnervingly bright.Henry and Wanda from World B were standing there as well. He looked down at me with barely restrained excitement. "Do you know that whoever controls the Mirror Gate can create endless wealth and even change the past? You're simply the final key to unlocking it, Christian."Grandma met my gaze and silently mouthed a few words. "Trust me just this once, Christian…"It was suddenly midnight. Grandma snatched up a broken piece of porcelain and slashed her wrist without hesitation. Her blood dr

A few muscular men in black suits had gathered around a villager, questioning him in gruff tones.I immediately pulled Nathan close and ducked into the nearby waist-high cornfield. We crouched on the damp ground, and through the gaps between the corn stalks, I heard Henry say coldly, "Go find that kid! I don't care whether he's dead or alive!"My heart skipped a beat. Henry actually knew that Nathan was the key. I quickly covered Nathan's mouth and waited until their footsteps faded before scrambling back to the city.I used a fake passport I had prepared in my past life to rent a room in the most remote area of the city. In the middle of the night, once we had settled in, Nathan suddenly developed a high fever. His cheeks flushed crimson, and

Those words on the note seemed to burn right through my fingertips.I carried the sleeping Nathan to the car without a second thought and raced to the ancestral home in the south of the city, as passing streetlights streaked outside the car window like a surreal, feverish dream.I noticed the main door to the ancestral home was unlocked and ajar, and, oddly enough, the stone slab covering the cellar entrance had been shifted open just a crack. A faint yellow glow from an oil lamp shone through the darkness.I carried Nathan down the damp steps. The cellar was much deeper than I recalled, almost as if it reached the center of the earth. Beneath the steps, I found an old wooden door instead of the usual storage space. Its surface was covered in elaborate symbols I couldn't read.Nathan suddenly stirred in my arms. Without opening his eyes, he pointed at the door and mumbled sleepily, "Great-Grandma is in there…"My heart skipped at that sight. I pushed the door open and found a room

I froze instantly. That single word, "Daddy", struck like thunder, detonating inside my racing mind.I shook as I stared at the boy stepping out from behind the oak tree. He was the spitting image of my son, Nathan. My voice was hoarse as I asked, "W-What is your name?"He looked at me timidly and whispered, "Nathan."It felt as if something had exploded in my head, shattering the last bit of reason I had left. I swept him into my arms and hugged him tightly. I could clearly feel the familiar little black mole at the back of his neck.Grandma and the surrounding villagers all crowded around, looking at me as though I'd lost my mind. "What are you doing? You're frightening the boy!"Grandma pulled me away from the boy, frowning. "That limping fellow who lives at the east end of the village found him near the entrance last winter. Nobody knew where he came from, so the man took him in and raised him."It felt as though my heart were being repeatedly cut with a knife. I looked at th
