Delivery on New Year's Eve

Chapter 1

"What are you standing around for? This is a huge payout. Hurry up and go!"

The cheap cigarette's smoke choked me, making me gag uncontrollably as my blurred vision gradually cleared up.

In front of me was a desk with peeling paint, overflowing with delivery receipts and ashtrays. Sitting behind it was a grease-slicked, heavy-set Dominic Flint, my dispatch manager, blowing clouds of smoke right at me.

In that split second, my heart seized violently, as if hit full force by a sledgehammer.

I wasn't dead?

My last memory was still stuck on that freezing New Year's Eve, being stabbed to death on the spot by the victim's family.

I hurriedly checked my phone for the time: December 31st, 2023, 9:30 p.m.

I was reborn! I had returned two and a half hours before the crime took place!

"Hurry up and change your clothes! Or do you not want to work here anymore?!"

Dominic’s impatient voice snapped me back to reality. He grabbed a pile of clothes next to him and threw them into my arms like trash.

The fabric felt cold and slick. It wasn't my familiar bright delivery windbreaker, but a midnight-black hoodie and cargo pants combo. The material was thick and radiated an indescribably creepy vibe.

"This customer had special instructions, super high-maintenance," Dominic exhaled a plume of smoke, tapping his nicotine-stained yellow finger against the order receipt on the desk.

"The courier has to wear this exact outfit. No company gear allowed. Said it was for… some ritual. And..."

He paused, his eyes narrowing. "You must knock on the door and deliver it at midnight sharp. Not a minute early, not a minute late. Got it?"

Those words hit me like a bolt of lightning, shattering my freshly reassembled consciousness.

It was identical.

Even Dominic's tone and the way he hurled those clothes were the same as in my past.

In my previous life, all because I chased that massive delivery fee, I foolishly threw on those black clothes and knocked on that door from hell right at midnight.

The door was unlocked and slightly ajar. The moment I pushed it open, the warm stench of rust and metallic blood hit my face. I reflexively peeked inside, only to see a woman in a red dress brutally murdered on the bed.

Panicked, I called 911, but I ended up taking the fall as the killer instead.

The interrogation, the jail cell, the sheer hopelessness that followed spun wildly through my head like a nightmare on loop.

Before I even had a chance to explain, the victim's family stabbed me to death right then and there.

Overcome by sheer terror, my hands instinctively shook, and I tossed the dark outfit right back onto the desk like a hot iron.

"I'm not taking it!"

My voice trembled, raspy and strained from peak tension. "This order is twisted! I'm not going! Find someone else!"

Dominic froze for a second before his face instantly darkened. He slammed his hand on the desk so hard that the cigarette butts jumped in the ashtray.

"Elliot, what the hell are you losing your mind over?!"

He stood up and pointed a finger right at my nose, roaring, "It’s New Year's Eve! Most couriers are home with their families, and there's only you and Jackson left at the station.

"Jackson just broke his leg and went to the ER, so who else is gonna deliver it if not you?!"

"The customer wrote in the notes that if we cancel or are late, we owe a hundred-thousand-dollar penalty fee! A hundred grand! I couldn't even sell you for that much!"

I gritted my teeth tightly and took a step back. "The penalty is your problem, but I'm not going! There's something wrong with this order!"

"What the hell are you laughing at?" Dominic stopped dead in his tracks."I'm laughing at how arrogant you all are," I stared straight into Dominic's eyes. "Did you really think that when I called the cops that night, it was just to stop a murder?"Dominic's expression darkened instantly. "What's that supposed to mean?"I let out a cold smirk. "It means your good times are over."Right on cue, the warehouse's heavy main doors were smashed open as blinding spotlights instantly illuminated every single dark corner of the room."Police! Nobody move!"A sea of heavily armed SWAT officers flooded the room, painting hundreds of red laser sights across Dominic and his three accomplices. Before Dominic could even lower the scalpel, a precise shot disarmed him. He let out a screech, clutching his shattered wrist as he collapsed to the ground. The body double who wore my face tried to bolt, but a SWAT officer tackled him hard into the concrete floor, grinding his face into the dirt and w

A week later, I was released. The official reason cited was insufficient evidence, alongside a psychiatric evaluation stating I was in a state of "intermittent sanity".The second I stepped through the doors of the psychiatric facility, I headed straight for my apartment, eager to verify my hypothesis. However, before I could make it far, something heavy smashed into the back of my head, knocking me out cold. When I finally woke up, I found myself bound tightly to a rusted iron chair. A single dim bulb dangled overhead, throwing harsh shadows across piles of junk scattered around the room. The air was thick with the stench of oil and rust.It was an abandoned warehouse."Look who's awake."A familiar voice echoed through the dim space. Struggling to lift my head, I looked up to see four figures standing right before me.Dominic, Harper, that angry customer from Room 206, and... a man who wore my exact face!"You..." I stammered, completely stunned."What? Don't tell me you ca

Right at that moment, the door to the interrogation room swung open, and a woman walked inside. It was Harper!"Harper!" I yelled in pure ecstasy. "You came! Quick, tell them! Tell them I'm normal, and that we're a couple!"Yet, as Harper stared back at me, her eyes were filled with nothing but cold unfamiliarity and terror.Shrinking behind the detective, she tremblingly pulled out her phone and played a video clip.On the screen was me.I was inside my apartment, screaming and shouting at nothing, punching and kicking the bare walls while yelling, "Harper! Don't be scared! I'll protect you!"And in that entire video frame, besides my crazed self, there was absolutely no one else."Officer..." the woman who looked identical to Harper sobbed softly. "I'm just his neighbor. He's suffered from severe delusions for a long time, constantly hallucinating that I'm his girlfriend and harassing me. I had no choice but to record this video..."Every single piece of evidence pointed tow

Next to him, a girl wearing a bright red uniform timidly raised her hand. "Hi, yeah… I just stepped away to use the bathroom for maybe five minutes...""That's impossible! I literally handed him the cash!" I screamed. The detective let out a cold laugh and pulled up the lobby's security footage on the tablet. On the screen, an extraordinarily horrifying scene played out.The lobby was completely empty, except for me.I walked up to the counter and started talking out loud to thin air, waving my hands around as if holding a full conversation with an invisible phantom. Then, I placed a hundred-dollar bill on the empty counter and made a pleading hand gesture toward the empty space.Right after that, I picked up the takeout bag myself and, like a sleepwalker, turned around and walked into the elevator. And yet, the moment I stepped inside the elevator, the hundred-dollar bill left on the counter vanished into thin air!A bone-chilling wave of dread surged straight from the soles

Could the butterfly effect from my rebirth have altered the timeline? Or... had the killer simply not struck yet?"Officer, this..." I pointed into the room, stammering. "I swear I heard—""Heard what?!" the man cursed. "I've been sitting here watching TV all by myself! Who the hell is talking about murder? You must be insane!"Just as the officers began turning suspicious glares toward me, clearly preparing to lecture me for filing a false report—"Ah!!!"A desperate, agonizing scream shattered the silence, echoing from deep down the hall.It was a desperate, agonizing cry of impending death that pierced through everyone's eardrums and shattered the uncanny silence."Over there!"The officers reacted instantly, sprinting toward the source of the noise—Room 209!Room 206 and Room 209 were only two doors apart. The police rushed to the entrance of 209, only to see thick, crimson blood slowly oozing out from beneath the door frame, painting a horrifying picture."Police! Whoev

I recoiled in shock, but forced myself to stay calm. "I already dropped it off at the front desk. The clerk is bringing it up to you right now.""Bullsh*t!"The voice on the line sounded ready to explode. "I haven't received a damn thing! And you didn't even follow the rules by wearing that black outfit and coming up here yourself! "I'm filing a complaint against you right now! Just wait until you get stuck paying that hundred-thousand-dollar penalty fee, you scammer!""Beep... beep…" The call cut off.I stood frozen in the center of the lobby, completely dumbfounded, as an ice-cold panic shot straight from my feet up to my spine. The front desk guy had literally just gone upstairs, and the elevator had stopped on the second floor. How could they not have received it?And more importantly... how did the caller know I hadn't gone up myself?Did they have a security camera on the door? Or was the customer watching me from inside the lobby?Instinctively, I scanned my surroundin
