Chapter 1

Author: Lightning Bolt
My husband, Jonathan Anders, snatched the satellite phone from me. He wanted to make another call to call off the rescue and prevent them from contacting the authorities.

Upon discovering that the phone could only be unlocked by scanning my retinas, he tried to pry my eyes open, his movements rough and forceful.

"Samantha York! Do you have to make such a huge fuss over something so insignificant? It's just a bottle of water! Did you have to go so far as to call for a rescue? And what's this about a robber on the team? You think you can bear the consequences if the expedition is delayed?"

I used all the strength left in my body to grip Jonathan's wrist tightly, all while keeping my eyes firmly screwed shut.

Waves of dehydration-induced dizziness crashed over me. At the same time, it felt like there was a ball of fire burning in my stomach. Even breathing was agonizing, as though glass shards were tearing me up inside.

In an attempt to relieve the discomfort, I licked the beads of blood seeping from my cracked lips, but it was all in vain.

Because of Jonathan, I had lost most of my strength. I had no idea how much more I could endure.

Madison Zink took a large gulp of the electrolyte-filled water, her eyes becoming half-lidded as she let out a relieved sigh.

"Sorry, Sam, but Jon was just acting out of the kindness of his heart. After all, I was severely dehydrated. What if I had died in the desert?"

Then, she even poured out some of the water to wipe her neck.

"Electrolyte drinks really do rehydrate one quickly. Luckily, you brought one with you, Sam. Otherwise, I would have had nothing to drink."

My nails dug into the car seat as hatred surged through me. I wished I could tear Madison to pieces right here, right now!

I had specifically prepared that bottle of electrolyte water for quick rehydration purposes.

Before we left for the expedition, I had suggested bringing more. However, Madison had deliberately contradicted me, saying I was spreading false information and that drinking normal water would have the same effect. In the end, I was the only one who insisted on bringing the electrolyte drink.

Yet, when I needed it at this critical moment to save my life, she had purposely wasted it!

Jonathan turned to fuss over Madison in concern, pressing a hand against her forehead before moving it to her neck.

"You don't need to apologize. You're already being very kind by leaving her other sources of water. She's the one who refuses to drink it."

With that said, he tossed the half-filled bottle of urine at me.

"Samantha, just who are you putting on this act for? Don't think I'm unaware that you've received several years of special forces training before. You're definitely not that weak or frail.

"Besides, if you really were so dehydrated, I bet you would be willing to drink anything that has water content in it, no matter how disgusting, let alone urine.

"Maddy has a weaker body, and that's why I'm paying more attention and care to her. Is it really necessary for you to be so hard on her?"

As if Madison had given me the urine out of good intentions; she had definitely done it to humiliate me!

At this point, my throat was so parched and hurt so terribly that I couldn't even waste my breath arguing with them anymore.

My dream?A few seconds later, I finally remembered something that happened years ago. At the time, he was tending to my wounds, and in a bid to distract me, he had asked what I wanted to do after retiring from the military.I had replied that I wanted to continue contributing to the country.Joining expedition teams to survey new resources was technically considered contributing to the country, no?Luckily, he hadn't called me out for trying to sound cool then.…Even though I was in the hospital, as the victim of the incident, I still had to cooperate with the investigation. The police came to take my statement before updating me on Jonathan and Madison's situation.Apparently, after they were taken to the police station, they turned on each other.Madison had indeed set Jonathan up, all because he refused to divorce me to be with her. Hence, in order to gain the most benefits out of this situation, she began to talk badly about me all the time, trying to brainwash Jonathan i

Sebastian's smile took on a mocking note as he added, "The uniform failed to perform as hoped, but it did record some interesting things."In an instant, Jonathan and Madison were left utterly dumbfounded, not at all expecting that I would have evidence.I wrote on the notebook, "I'll be handing all that over to the police later."Realizing that there was no turning back now, Madison began screaming at me hysterically, "You! You must have deliberately set us up! Jon was right! Living with someone like you is like walking on eggshells all the time! Just one moment of carelessness, and you slap a murder charge on us!"Do you have no conscience? How could you send Jon to prison when he's done so much for you? Do you know what he told me? He would've divorced you long ago if it weren't for the fact that he was worried about having to give you half his assets. That, and that he might be unfairly targeted because of your good relationship with Mr. Potter!"Those words had Jonathan panic

Jonathan latched onto Adrian, who happened to be closest to him. With tears streaming down his face, he yelled, "Mr. Potter, I can't go to jail! If I do, my life will be over! I went on a lot of survey expeditions too, didn't I? You can't just refuse to give me a chance over one single mistake!"Adrian was so infuriated that I could almost see steam coming out of his ears. "Those expeditions you went on were technically completed by Samantha; you were just there for the ride and got to share in the glory. Did you seriously think you were accomplished because of that?"If it weren't for the fact that you were Samantha's husband, I wouldn't have kept one eye closed over this matter. Besides, the punishment for what you did isn't up to me anymore."Jonathan wailed, "But I truly didn't want to kill Samantha! I just misunderstood her situation and wrongly assumed that she wasn't in any danger. That's why I gave the supplies that could've saved her to the other team members."The anger o

Thinking back on it now, I suddenly found my past self to be such a joke.Jonathan was momentarily rendered speechless, but he quickly recovered and tried to justify his actions. "But you went through special forces training before, didn't you? None of us was dehydrated, so I thought you were fine too. That's why I gave all the things you prepared to Maddy."A bubble of furious laughter burst from my lips, which agitated my wounds and made them hurt.Sebastian frowned before kicking Jonathan out without a hint of courtesy. "That's enough. Hurry up and leave. What's the point of saying all this nonsense? What she needs more now is rest!"However, Jonathan merely glared at Sebastian. "You're just a doctor. What right do you have to chase me out? I'm her husband! What's wrong with me talking to my wife?"Hearing that, I swiftly wrote in the notebook, "No, we're not husband and wife anymore. You said you wanted to divorce me, right? I agree."Then, I turned to look at Sebastian. "Dr.

Feeling at ease, I finally let sleep take me.When I next awoke, I was already in the hospital. Sebastian Inkerton, a doctor from the medical team, was checking my vital signs. Upon seeing that I had woken up, he breathed a sigh of relief. "You're finally awake. You know, when our rescue team arrived, and I saw your condition, I was utterly dumbfounded. I think I probably would've felt guilty for the rest of my life if I had failed to save you."I subconsciously opened my mouth to thank him, but he hurriedly raised a hand to stop me."Don't speak. Your throat is too badly injured, so you can forget about talking for the time being. Just rest. As for your wrist, we've set the broken bones, but you might suffer from some aftereffects even after recovering."He paused briefly to stare at me with a complex look in his eyes. Then, he handed me a notebook and a pen. "Your head of department has been anxiously waiting for you to wake up. I think he has something to discuss with you. U

I was slowly sinking into the darkness, no longer able to see anything clearly. All the pain coursing through me had also gone numb, and it felt as though I was falling into an abyss.Madison's voice, dripping with fake concern, reached my ears. It sounded muffled, as though coming through a wall of dense fog."Sam! What's happening to you?"By then, I was unable to respond anymore. She continued worriedly, "She left a lot of blood here. What if the wild animals smell it and attack us? Even though Sam doesn't like me, I still can't bear to watch her die."How about this? Let's dig a hole and bury Sam along with the bloodied sand. That should cover up the scent of blood."Everyone instantly agreed with her suggestion. Hence, they grabbed shovels from the SUV and dug out a hole beside me in no time. Following that, they kicked me into the hole.Sand filled my nose and mouth, causing me to suffocate.Madison wasn't trying to cover the smell of blood—she wanted to bury me alive.M
