Aldwin's words still hung in the dining hall as he left me there and headed back to his room.

He picked up his phone and called Lizzy.

“Notify the board. I want everyone in the boardroom by nine,” he said in an urgent tone, completely ignoring Lizzy's greeting she had barely finished when she picked up.

The line beeped.

He tore the pajamas off his body with a single, angry yank, buttons splattering across the floor. He dragged the shirt off and tossed it on the floor. The morning was cold

“I understand that's what you heard on the call, but at the physical location, there were no traces of an ambush or abduction. His car wasn't there. There were no signs of a struggle – nothing.”My chest tightened, and It felt like I no longer knew how to breathe. “Where else could he be? He was right there. I heard him. I heard…” my voice broke.“We're expanding the search,” he continued. “Checking traffic cameras along alternate routes, looking for his vehicle, following up with hospitals in case he was injured and transported. We'll also be reaching out to Mr. Ellison to see if he has any information about their meeting this morning.”Aldwin. He knows something. He threatened him – said he would come for him. I wished I could say all of that.“We'll look into all the leads, Ms. Kora. In the meantime, if you hear from Mr. Townsend, contact us immediately.”The line went dead.I stared at the phone with my hand trembling before I let it slip from my fingers onto the bed.“No way.”

“Yea.” I sniffed. “He had a meeting to attend.” My voice cracked. “That was why he went there.” The tears that had pooled in my eyes now flowed freely, the lie I was telling already killing me. I had the power to say Aldwin promised an attack, that Ralph went to confront him after a break-in at his house, but it also meant exposing myself as a thief, for stealing confidential documents belonging to Ellison Holdings – the almighty Ellison empire. They wouldn't let me off the hook so easily; no, I would never be free from that. Aldwin would have no reason to protect me anymore – or was he protecting his reputation? He married a lowlife who steals his business information and gives it out to her boyfriend. Whichever it was, I wouldn't be spared. “He reported a break-in at his house last night.” I added, steadying my voice as best I could. “His laptop was stolen. He had been followed for weeks. And now he's gone.” “Ma'am, I'm going to need you to provide as much information as you can.

I sat frozen on my bed, the phone still pressed against my ear even though the line had gone dead, my hands shaking as my chest felt tight – like something was crushing me from the inside. I pulled the phone away and opened the call log, the duration showed three minutes. I had been on call with Ralph for three minutes, and that was all it took for everything to fall apart. I tried calling him again, but it went to voicemail. My thumb hovered over the screen as my mind raced. I needed to do something, to call someone, but I wasn't sure who. Lisa. The thought hadn't even crossed my mind until now. I had been so focused on Ralph and what just happened, on how his voice had gradually faded and on the silence that followed, that I hadn't thought about anything else. I scrolled through my contacts and pressed Lisa's name – she picked at once. “Hey girl.” “Lisa.” My voice came out breathless. “Something happened. Something bad.” “What happened?” She didn't sound triggered at first

In the elevator, Ralph leaned against the wall and closed his eyes. His hands shook from the frustration of being dismissed, of being told to his face that there was nothing he could do. But Aldwin had said something that didn't sit right – he said he didn't send anyone, that he didn't have to. If it wasn't Aldwin, then who broke into his house? Who had been following him for two weeks? He pulled out his phone and dialed a number he knew by heart. “I was just about to call you. Did you go? Tell me you didn't go.” “I went.” There was a brief pause. “What happened?” I asked calmly, hearing the frustration in his voice. “He said he didn't do it.” Ralph sighed in exhaustion. “The tailing, the break-in – he said it wasn't him.” “And you believe him?” He stared at the elevator doors as they slid open onto the lobby. “I don't know what to believe anymore.” He pulled out of the parking garage and hit the main road, his hands still trembling from the meeting. He needed to clear his h

“Did you?” Aldwin stopped a few steps away, pocketing his hands. “Then why did my wife confess to stealing my proposal and handing it over to you?” The words hung in the space between them. Ralph's jaw tightened, but he didn't look away. “She was scared,” he said. “She told you what you wanted to hear.” “She told me the truth.” Aldwin's voice was quiet, but there was steel beneath it. “She admitted it. She gave you my proposal, and you used it to counter everything I offered. That's not winning on merit, Ralph. That's stealing.” “I don't know what you're talking about, and Kora didn't steal nothing.” He wasn't going to allow himself to be manipulated by Aldwin like he had with me. He was never going to admit to coming in contact with those documents or using the information to counter his proposal. “She offered you private information, even though she claims you never asked for it. She's taking all the blame, saying she only wanted to help you.” “No such thing happened,” Ralph s

Ralph stepped out of his car and looked up at the Ellison Holdings building. It loomed over him, all glass and steel, the kind of structure that reminds you exactly who was in charge. He had been here before, years ago, for a meeting he had barely gotten through. Now he was back for something else entirely. He straightened his jacket and walked in. The lobby was busy for a mid-morning. It was always busy here. He felt as if all eyes were on him, as if they knew what he came for, but it was all in his head. No one had the time to notice anybody. He headed straight for the reception desk. “I'm here to see Aldwin Ellison,” he said. The receptionist smiled practically and glanced at her screen. “Do you have an appointment, sir?” “No. But he'll see me.” She gave him a look that suggested she heard that line at least once a day. “Mr. Ellison is a very busy man. If you'd like to schedule…” “Tell him Ralph Townsend is here,” he cut in. “He'll know who I am.” Something in his voice mad
