“What was that for? You can be annoyingly too loud sometimes.” I complained, barely listening to whatever she was blabbering about. “Will you just listen? You are all over the news. Lisa’s voice cracked with urgency. “Every media outlet is running the story about the so-called proposal from last night.” She shoved her phone in my face, “See?” Some headlines called it a scandal. Others claimed Aldwin was drunk and mistakenly proposed to a mysterious woman. Of course, that woman was me, a nobody, not worth mentioning beside a billionaire whose name alone carried weight. Someone must have recorded it last night. I wasn't surprised. In a crowded bar with phones everywhere, it was almost inevitable. The media had finally seized the story they’d been yearning for: “After years of public denials of being involved in any romantic relationship, the famous billionaire and heir to Imperial Holdings finally found the woman of his dreams. Aldwin Ellison shocked the public by proposing to an unknown woman last night at the exclusive Supreme bar…” Every news outlet ran its own juicy headline. The story was everywhere. “Well, you’re famous now,” Lisa said with blatant mockery. I shook my head, “This can't be happening, right?” “Your face is on every feed. It already happened,” Lisa said, endlessly scrolling through her phone. “Hold up,” her eyes widened as she stared at her screen. “Is that an Aston Martin Valkyrie?” Lisa covered her gaping mouth in awe. I took the phone from her again. Wow. Someone had been really busy with my business last night. The photo showed Aldwin and me just as I stepped into his car. Nice angle. I thought. “It was just messing around. It wasn't a real thing. How am I supposed to go out with this face?” I panicked, pressing my palms into my cheeks. “Brace yourself, love. From the look of things, it's getting real. And if it was a mistake, trust me, Aldwin will handle the media.” Lisa said, still scrolling on her phone. I searched for my phone."What time is it?” Oh no. I was going to be late again. It was my final warning, after I had shown up late numerous times over the past three months. I dashed into the bathroom and got ready as fast as I could. By the time I got to the restaurant, Mikel was already cooking my assigned dish. “You’re late again. I see you've got a pending offer.” Mikel said, not looking up. “Mikel, you don't know the half of this I…” “There’s always a backup story. Every damn time.” He shook his head slightly. “I need hands with the lasagna sauce.” He smiled. “You can explain that to Bobby later.” I gave a nod, then swung into action, pulling out a cutting board. It seemed like any normal day at work. No one had noticed the news about Aldwin and me circulating in the media. I had finished with the lasagna and was prepping a new order when Bobby stormed into the kitchen. “I told you there wouldn't be any more chances, didn't I?" He leaned on the table, with a soft, harmless-looking smile, as if he meant no harm. “Something happened,” I replied, forcing a small smile. “Well, something always happens.” He said with a wink. His tone dropped, “And why are you on the news for no good reason?” Now, he has everyone's attention. They all looked at me with questioning eyes. “Aldwin Ellison? You've got some wild dreams, Kora.” Bobby's brow furrowed in disbelief. “So that's what happened last night? You were taking on him that you got so wasted and woke up late, dragging your lazy ass to work at the time you did, huh?” He roared in disgust. “You don't get to talk to me in that manner,” I said, in a sharp voice. “And why are you so worked up about my personal life? What has it got to do with you, Bobby?” The kitchen fell silent now, except for the sizzling sounds coming from a pan on the stove. “This fantasy of yours is getting into your head already. If you think Aldwin will ever settle for a woman like you, you’re more foolish than I thought.” He sneered bitterly."This is it," I said, indicating for Lisa to stop. "We are here.""Here? I don't see your car," Lisa frowned, but parked the car at a corner, leaving the headlights on, which illuminated a twisted tear in the metal guardrail. We stepped out of the car, walking toward the blinking tracker. As we got to the edge of the broken barrier, my fear was made real.I looked down the steep, rocky cliff. My eyes scanned the snapped branches and crushed bushes, and to my bewilderment, a faint, eerie beam of light flickered – my car, the one Zane had been driving, was upside down.My brain shut down completely in seconds, and the only thing I wanted to do was get to my son. I felt cold arms around me, pulling me away, stopping me from what I was about to do. And just then, my senses snapped back."What are you trying to do?" Lisa asked, still clutching me tight. "Do you want to kill yourself?""Let me go. I need to get to Zane," I said, struggling to break free from Lisa's hold, but she was determi
I pinched my phone screen to zoom in and see the location on the blinking tracker."Get in!" Lisa called as she drove to where I was standing.I hurried around the car to the passenger side. Lisa zoomed off the moment I shut the door."Where is he headed?" she asked, not taking her eyes off the road."He's heading north, up the West Side Highway.""He's going toward the bridge. That's almost twenty minutes away from here. How did he get there so fast?" Lisa said, before stepping on the gas pedal, increasing our speed."What exactly happened? Why did Zion run away?" Lisa asked."He didn't have his way with Aldwin this time." That was what I understood from what Zane had explained in a rush."What do you mean?""It seems he made a request… wait." A sudden realisation hit me. Could that be it?"What?" Lisa asked, itching to hear the reason."Zion came to me earlier, asking who Aldwin would choose as CEO. I told him I had no idea about that or if it was even a thing. He didn't seem please
"Ignore them," Zane said, concluding that this greed was fueled by his friends. "Don't let them push you into an unnecessary competition. Trust Father's decision if he has to pick a CEO.""I said you should leave my friends out of this," Zion said, then stood up. "You know what? Forget I ever asked. I'll ask Father myself." He walked away angrily.Zane watched his brother as he walked away, wondering what else could be going on in his mind. What else was he up to? But seeing how displeased Zion was, he wondered if he had done the right thing. He had never said no to Zion, and this one seemed important to him.Zane shrugged off the thought.A few minutes later, he decided to look for Zion to see what he was up to. He noticed Zion speaking to Aldwin in a corner, so he stood to observe.Aldwin had an amused expression on his face, while Zion had a look of dissatisfaction. Whatever the outcome was, Zane knew it wasn't to Zion's liking. Zion was still talking while Aldwin watched his son w
The edge in Zane's voice made him sound almost annoyed, like he was being disturbed with indirect schemes and questions he didn't want to entertain. But Zion wanted what he wanted, so he ignored Zane's unusual attitude and asked anyway."Can you help me talk to Father?" Zion asked calmly, not wanting to offend Zane any further."About what exactly?" Zane asked, eyeing Zion. He knew his brother was definitely up to something, knowing him to be the free spirit who spoke whatever he had in mind. What could be so difficult to talk to Aldwin about? Zane knew there was more to this "favor" he was asking for. It caught his interest now."What is this about?" Zane asked again, seeing how Zion hesitated to state whatever it was.Zion cleared his throat, even though he didn't need to. "Help me declare your lack of interest to Father. I want to be CEO, and I know you don't have any interest in that," Zion said with a playful wink."Declare my lack of interest?" Zane repeated his words."Yes.""I
He hesitated for a moment. Whatever it was, I was certain it weighed on his mind. He had been thinking about it for weeks, and he couldn't wait any longer."Who do you think Father will pick?" he asked. "As CEO, I mean. It has to be one of us, eventually."I was taken aback a little, trying to understand why Zion would come up with such a question."Why are you asking me that?""Because I've been thinking about it."Zion glanced across the room, where Zane was standing by the windows, talking to one of the shareholders with a look of polite disinterest."A company only has one CEO. Father can't name both of us."I set my champagne glass down on a passing server's tray, trying to control the wave of emotions that was bubbling inside me. I wondered how he had come up with such thoughts."You and your brother are equals, Zion. You're both heirs. That's what tonight is about.""That's not what I asked," he said firmly."I know," I said, reaching up to straighten his bow tie, the way I alw
A company had only one CEO. That was just a fact. Someone had to make the final decision, carry the ultimate responsibility, stand at the helm while everyone else followed. Aldwin had been that person for as long as Zion could remember, and he had always assumed that one day, the role would pass to him.But Zane was his twin. They were equals in every way that mattered, born on the same day, raised in the same house, given the same opportunities. If Aldwin intended to name one of them as the heir apparent, he had never said so out loud.Zion had always seen himself as the obvious choice. He was more like Aldwin, both in appearance and attitude, charm and charisma. Zane on the other hand was a total opposite, and he wasn't so interested in anything that has to do with Imperial Holdings – the Ellison Empire, or so he thought. Zion saw himself as the son who had always shown interest in knowing things about the business. He always asked the right questions and his inquisitiveness was ev
Ray led me towards the far edge of the office, while Aldwin watched silently from his desk. As Ray tapped a thumbprint scanner, circled in a faint blue glow on the stainless coating, the wall split open before us. I gasped out of shock, not expecting that. We stepped onto the platform. Ray looked b
“Come have a seat, my lawyer will be joining us shortly,” Aldwin said, gesturing towards a sitting area decorated with plush leather seating.“Thank you,” I replied as I sat down. He sat beside me. “Did you go through the document thoroughly?” He asked, his gaze held mine. Why was he sitting this
I was amazed at the sight of the luxury dresses on Mannequins. I caught incredulous stares from the workers, a subtle reminder that I was now famous. I hadn’t seen many nice comments about me since the news broke. They didn’t like the fact that their revered billionaire sweetheart was marrying a no
I flicked my hand near my face, and the bold diamond on my ring caught the light as I showed it to Lisa. “Whattt?” She screamed, placing both hands on her head. “Is that a diamond ring?” She asked rhetorically. I couldn’t hold my laughter. “It’s real now, girl. It’s fucking real!” She sank into
