Chapter 5

Author: No Daydreams
Gideon's face turned an angry shade of red, but when he glanced at the smiling patient in the next bed, he bit back his frustration.

Seeing me packing up, he gave me a confused look. "What are you doing?"

"I've taken care of your discharge paperwork. We're giving up the bed for someone who needs it more. Besides, we can't afford to stay any longer."

With that, I gently pulled him up.

Gideon was weak and drained. A look of clear displeasure flickered across his face. "But I've only been here half a day."

"Well, if we can leave earlier, then why not? You always say we should think of others, right?" I said, raising my voice loud enough for everyone in the room to hear.

Needing to maintain his image of selflessness, Gideon stiffly nodded. "Of course, I'm always happy to help."

I couldn't help but smile to myself.

I was happy too.

It seemed the system had tied Gideon and me together. Only when he agreed would the virtue system register the task as complete.

There was no way I could earn one million dollars by helping people peel a few apples.

Suddenly, Gideon surprised me once again with his words. "When you're done packing, you can go stay under the bridge. At least it'll shield you from the wind and rain."

My hand froze as I was packing. Was he really offering to give away my house?

He was still in denial, unable to accept that the system hadn't notified him of the task's completion.

I remembered when I tried to reason with him in my previous life. "That's my house! Why would you give it away without telling me?"

Gideon had lectured me, "I didn't know you were this heartless. Those homeless people are desperate to have a home. Don't you see that?"

"But you—"

"Enough! They're so pitiful, and you have a house. Why not give it to them?"

Because I refused to give away the house, I was hated by the homeless, and that eventually led to my death at one of their hands.

Now, Gideon was talking loudly in front of everyone, "I'm giving that house away. The homeless are so miserable. They deserve a home."

Everyone in the room heard him.

It seemed like he still hadn't given up. He was hoping the system would finally show its presence.

What he didn't know was that the system had already notified me that I'd earned one million dollars.

Gideon grabbed my hand. "I'll stay at my mom's, but you know she doesn't like living with you, so I guess you'll have to make do."

Gideon's mother, Lily Duncan, was a real piece of work. She'd once demanded 30,000 dollars as compensation when Gideon joined our family as a live-in son-in-law and even tried to get him to send money to her every month.

Now, Gideon wanted to give away my house and send me to live under a bridge while he went back to Lily's house.

I smiled. "Okay, I guess I'll be living under the bridge then."

The next morning, while Gideon was still asleep, I boarded a plane to an overseas destination. When I arrived, my parents were there to pick me up. The three of us hugged tightly, and there was no moment that felt more perfect. After I disappeared, Gideon repeatedly called me, but the number had already been disconnected.I only knew that after being kicked out of the house by the new owner, Gideon had ended up on the streets. With no other choice, he had to sleep under a bridge, where at least he could shield himself from the wind and rain.We had no contact after that.A year later, I saw Gideon again on my phone. He was livestreaming. Behind him were Caleb and the homeless men. They spoke of Gideon's struggles. How he had sold everything to help others go to school, donated a kidney to a complete stranger, broken his leg saving someone—which left him unable to walk for the rest of his life—and sold his house to help the poor live better lives.Gideon just stared blankly at t

The young man was Caleb Atkins, a college student from Gideon's village.Back in high school, he had a reputation for getting into fights and even got a female classmate pregnant. In the end, he wound up at a private vocational school. His family didn't want him to go, but Gideon, feeling sorry for Caleb, decided to cover his tuition.Caleb figured this way, he could avoid working for a few more years and keep living off his parents. When Gideon saw Caleb, his expression darkened."Gideon, didn't you say you'd cover my tuition?" Caleb asked. "How are you going to give me the money?"Gideon was just a freeloader. There was no way he had that kind of cash. He made empty promises just to get money from me."You'll need to ask Kenzie—"I cut him off, "You're talking to the right person. When Gideon finishes donating blood, I'll give you the money."Caleb was tan. When I finished speaking, he flashed a grin, showing his white teeth. The homeless men around us weren't happy with th

When the police called, Gideon froze. It wasn't until he identified the body that he confirmed it was Lily. She'd died along with her baby.I went with him. The moment he saw her, he collapsed in front of her body, crying out in grief."I failed you, Mom!" he wailed. "I couldn't even see you one last time!"People around us murmured sympathetically, handing him tissues and offering words of comfort. It was easy to act like a dutiful son after the fact.Honestly, Gideon was one hell of an actor.A day after Lily was buried, he came looking for me. He hurried over in his wheelchair and grabbed my arm. "Kenzie, quick! Come with me!"I kicked the wheelchair away, sending him sliding about ten feet away. "What now?"He grabbed the wheelchair, trying to steady himself. "I found my mom's killer! It was a thief. He accidentally hurt her during a robbery."I frowned. "Oh, so did the cops arrest him?"Gideon shook his head. "He must have been desperate for money if he was stealing. If

Gideon's good days were coming to an end.Everything that had happened to him was his own doing. He had no one to blame but himself. After tidying up the house, I threw out all of his belongings. I had sold the property, and it would be handed over to the new owner in a month.Once everything was settled, I planned to head overseas to find my parents. As for Gideon, he could deal with his own fate.Just then, my phone rang. It was Gideon.I picked up, but instead of his voice, a stranger spoke. "Hello, is this Mrs. Huber? Mr. Huber's in the hospital. He's broken his leg."He broke his leg?If Gideon had done it on purpose to avoid donating blood, it seemed unnecessary. That was too much of a sacrifice. No matter what, he couldn't die yet. I still needed another two million dollars before I could withdraw the money. So I went to the hospital.Outside his hospital room, a few of the homeless men were waiting. When I walked in, I found Gideon shaking in his bed. The moment he s

Gideon didn't chase after Lily. He simply muttered, "She's so old and still acting all dramatic."The homeless people didn't pay us any attention. They were too busy playing cards, smoking, and drinking. Empty bottles littered the floor.Gideon walked over and started making small talk with them. "How's everyone settling in?"There was no response. It was as if he wasn't even there. These weren't homeless people. They were a bunch of old men acting like they owned the place.Gideon, having gathered this group of troublemakers, had some serious guts. But being ignored made him awkward, so he pushed me to the front."I know money's tight for everyone, and I've been thinking about it, so I've got some good news for you all today."Of course, the word "money" got their attention, and they turned toward Gideon almost in unison. Their eyes lit up."Are you giving us money?" one of them asked.Gideon loved the attention. These homeless people knew exactly how to feed his ego."Mr. H

  • Destroying the Holy Husband   Chapter 7

When I followed Gideon into his house, the first thing I noticed was Lily, looking disheveled and utterly exhausted. The homeless people had made themselves right at home, lounging around and waiting to be fed.Lily, on the other hand, was practically at her breaking point. Now that she was pregnant, she didn't have the courage to show her face. But honestly, she had brought it all on herself. When she saw Gideon, it was as if she had seen her savior. "Gideon, you're back! What are we going to do about this baby?"She rubbed her belly and continued, "Can you make them leave? I've been working nonstop, and I'm so exhausted. I can't take it anymore!"From the moment I stepped in, she didn't stop whining and complaining. It made Gideon frown. The air was thick with a foul stench. As I looked deeper into the room, I saw a group of homeless people picking their feet while playing cards.Dirty clothes and socks were scattered all over the floor. The room was clouded with smoke and l
