Arabella

Painful laughter tore from my throat. It was jagged and hollow, like something broken scraping against bone.

I threw my head back and laughed, my chest ached from the force of it.

The reality—was much worse than the initial truth of things that had been dangled in front of me. Things I’d allowed myself to believe.

I had been blind.

Willfully, pathetically blind.

Tears sprang to the surface, hot and stinging, blurring the edges of my vision as I choked on another laugh.

How foolish I had been.

How small.

How stupid.

I couldn’t even argue with him. He was right to call me that.

Stupid.

Simple-minded just as he sneered.

My laughter faded into a choked gasp, my hands trembling as I pressed them to my face, nails digging into my skin as if I could claw away my own naivety.

“How long?” I pressed, my voice barely above a whisper. “How long have you been planning this?”

His lips curved, but there was no amusement in it—only a cold satisfaction.

“Years,” he said. “It took years. Pa

  • Devil's Bidding   Chapter 24: Stripped Bare

ArabellaI lay there, shivering on the cold tiles, long past the point of knowing how much time had passed. Minutes? Hours? I couldn’t tell. My body ached from lying curled in that corner, but I didn’t move.My eyes were dry now, completely. Every tear had already been shed. I had cried until my chest burned, until there was nothing left to give. Now, all that remained was fury. Cold, bitter fury.Rage pulsed through my veins hotter than any fever. I hated him.I hated Lucas. That twisted, heartless bastard who had humiliated me, broken me down, and played me like a puppet. Everything about him, his voice, his gaze, the way he carried himself like the world should bow at his feet. The fear I once felt had vanished, burned away by what he’d done to me. There was only hate now. A hate so sharp, it sliced through the numbness like glass.Every time he demanded something, I swore I would give him the exact opposite. I would be his thorn, his nightmare. If misery was the only power I h

  • Devil's Bidding   Chapter 23:

The house was silent, an eerie, oppressive kind of quiet that only seemed to make the place feel larger. Only the soft, intermittent beeping of electronics and the echo of Lucas’s footsteps broke through as he climbed the grand staircase, his hand trailing absently along the polished mahogany rail.He moved with purpose, heading straight for her room.“Sir,” Beth called softly from the hallway, intercepting him before he could open the door.Lucas paused and turned slightly, his expression unreadable."How is she?" he questioned. “I’m sorry,” Beth began, keeping her voice low. “We couldn’t carry out your instructions. We told her it was from you. That she had to eat. To let us treat her injuries. But she just sat there. Ignored us entirely.”Lucas's irritation was clear. He didn't approve f their incompetence. She hesitated.“She even threw something at one of the maids,” she added. "That’s when we left her alone." Lucas simply nodded, his face blank as stone. Without another word

  • Devil's Bidding   Chapter 22: Broken

Arabella sat in the car, completely detached from her surroundings as the vehicle glided smoothly through the landscape. Her eyes, swollen and red-rimmed, no longer produced tears, they had dried up miles ago, leaving behind only a dull ache and a crushing hollowness in her chest. She didn’t blink. Didn’t move. Her body was present, but her soul was somewhere far away, drifting where no one could reach it.When the car stopped, a man opened the door without a word, and she was transferred to a waiting helicopter. Still, she remained mute, unmoving, numb to the sound of spinning blades and the gust of wind that whipped at her hair as they took off. The flight was short, a blur of vibrations and noise that she barely registered. When they landed, she was quietly ushered into yet another car.It was only when the second vehicle rolled to a gentle stop that a voice finally pierced the fog in her mind.“We’re here,” the man beside her announced. The words were simple, but they shattered t

  • Devil's Bidding   Chapter 21: An oath to kill

How did he know?Arabella's mind was spinning in disbelief. The woman on the subway—the one who had offered her the hoodie. The warmth wrapped around her shoulders now suddenly burned like acid.He had sent it.He had orchestrated even that.---Earlier.“Did she make it out?” Lucas asked calmly, already knowing the answer.“She did,” Alex responded. “But… it's drizzling.”Lucas’s expression darkened slightly.“She ran in the rain?”Alex hesitated.“Yes.”“She’ll need something warm. Her heart isn't..... ” His voice was low. “Get her warm clothes.”Alex stared at the message, bewildered. Then, with a sigh, he crossed the station and approached an older woman on the platform.“Ma’am, I need a small favor.”He pointed discreetly. “See that lady over there? She’s my boss’s girlfriend. They had a fight, and she’s trying to run. He asked me to make sure she’s okay. Please, just… offer her this. She won’t accept it from me.”The woman had nodded, concerned, and crossed over to Arabella, h

  • Devil's Bidding   Chapter 20: No escape

It couldn’t be Lucas.No. Her eyes had to be playing tricks on her.How had he found her so quickly?Arabella’s blood ran cold. Her already pale face lost all color as her gaze locked with him. Her heart beating as she struggled with herself. He was here? Really here! Her knees nearly gave out beneath her.It felt like standing face-to-face with the devil himself.Everything, everything, had been a lie? She shook her head slowly her eyes still wide in disbelief. Her escape plan. Her frantic coordination and execution. Even the silent prayers.Creeping out of the manor and getting on that train. Were all in futile? He knew everything. All of it, while he watched from afar… and laughed.“Sophie lied?” she whispered, her voice a ghost. “The cameras… they do work?”“No,” Lucas replied calmly. “They don’t.”Her breath hitched. “Then how…”She couldn’t comprehend it. Couldn’t wrap her mind around how he had come two days earlier than scheduled. How he had known she was planning an

  • Devil's Bidding   Chapter 19: All for nothing

Arabella Where was the third guard? I wondered. And suddenly I heard a low grunt, and my heart plummeted.No. Please no.It had to be him, the last security guard. Was he awake? Had he heard me?I dove to the floor hiding behind a plant, my breath trapped in my throat. The cold concrete bit into my knees as I waited in absolute stillness, heart pounding madly against my ribcage like a warring drum. This was it, I'd be caught. I wouldn’t make it.I’d come all this way for nothing. I squatted there holding back tears. I closed my eyes for a moment waiting for when I'd be discovered. Seconds passed. Then a full minute. Nothing. No footsteps, only my madly beating heart.Swallowing hard, I crawled out from the shadows, inching forward slowly. There was no one in sight. I walked on looking for the last guard and then I found him at the gate house. There he was.Slouched over a table, completely out cold.I released a shaky breath, relief flooding through me.That’s when I saw it.A c
