Chapter 5

Author: You to You
Margaret and Sam instantly panicked and swarmed her. "Kendall, sweetheart, are you okay?"

Kenneth tenderly scooped his daughter up into his arms and eyed me reproachfully. "Morgiana, how could you—"

I watched the scene unfold apathetically, without a single ripple of emotion in my heart. The venomous words she'd said to me in my previous life still rang in my ears.

"Why are you crying?" I asked flatly. "It's just a little cut. It's not like she's dead."

As soon as my words fell, everyone in the room was taken aback. Kenneth stared at me in disbelief, too.

Roxana, who had watched from the sidelines all this time, immediately sprinted over and pulled Kendall into a tight hug. Tears welled up in her eyes. "How could you say that, Morgiana? Kendall is just a child. She—"

I whirled around and cut off her performance. "Save the waterworks! Your daughter isn't dead yet. Why are you wailing like you're at a funeral?

"Are you that desperate to show everyone what a loving mother you are? Too bad no one here's buying it!"

Her face flushed and paled as she was stumped.

I smoothed out my disheveled wedding gown and continued calmly, "I won't be going to the back room, and there's no way in hell I'm apologizing to her. If anyone thinks I'm possessed, they're welcome to find a priest and have me checked themselves."

I paused for a moment. I took in Sam and Margaret's livid faces and Kenneth's conflicted expression. "One more thing—starting today, I'm the one who calls the shots in this house!"

With that, I paid no further attention to the spectacular array of expressions on their faces and pointed at the door. "Now, all of you, get the hell out of my room!"

Margaret wanted to argue, but I picked up the remaining half cup of coffee on the table and hurled it at her feet. The mug shattered into pieces, and she shrieked, stumbling backward.

"Scram!" I snarled.

Kenneth's expression became as stormy. He held Kendall, who was still in tears, and gritted his teeth before leading everyone out of the room.

All the strength drained from my body, and I collapsed onto the bed. Staring at the wedding portrait on the wall, I couldn't help but find the whole situation ironic.

Why did it have to be him? Why did it have to be him of all people?

My memories dragged me back to the devastating earthquake three years ago.

At the time, I was working as a tutor in an old school building. Without a moment's notice, violent shocks tore through the ground.

The ceiling came crashing down. I managed to get all my students out, but I was trapped in a narrow void beneath the debris. A crossbeam pressed down on my left leg, and excruciating pain shot through me.

Oxygen was running dangerously low. I lost track of how long I had been buried as my consciousness slowly began to fade.

Just before I gave up, a faint beam of light shone in. "There's someone down here! Hang in there!" a man called out.

Then I heard someone digging through bricks and rubble with his bare hands, accompanied by heavy, ragged breathing.

After what felt like an eternity, the rubble above me was cleared. I tried my best to look up and met Kenneth's eyes.

Back then, he was simply one of the volunteer rescuers on site.

"Don't be afraid. I'll get you out of here." His voice was calm and steady.

However, the crossbeam pinning me down was too heavy to move without professional equipment. He actually wedged his own shoulder into the narrow gap and exhausted nearly all his strength to free my leg cautiously. His shoulder was torn and bloodied, but he never let go of me.

After I was rescued, he stayed by my side in the hospital. He helped pay my medical bills. He was the one who had pulled me back from death's door.

I'd once sworn to repay his kindness with the rest of my life. Yet, all he did was pull me out of one hell, only to trap me in another.

In my previous life, I'd revolved my world around him. Thus, I didn't owe him a single thing anymore.

In this life…

I jerked my head up. The last trace of hesitation in my eyes vanished completely.

Since I'd been given a second chance at life, I was going to live it to the fullest. Not a single person who had hurt me was going to get away with it!

Kenneth actually had the nerve to ask me for the money he'd invested back. I almost laughed out loud. I slapped him hard across the face. "Here, have a slap instead!" His world came crashing down around him, and he was so furious that he fainted on the spot. My life, on the other hand, was only just beginning. …Things were far from over, though. As soon as she learned the news, Margaret rushed to the hospital. She took one look at her son and realized his manhood was missing. Her eyes nearly popped out of their sockets, and with a shrill shriek, she set off to seek revenge on Roxana. Unfortunately, she was just an old hag with little strength. In the end, she got beaten black and blue. Her head was so swollen that it looked like a pumpkin. Margaret returned to the hospital in tears to see Kenneth. Her ears were filled with the chatter of the medical staff. "Morgiana really drew the short straw marrying into that family." "Kenneth looks like a decent man on the outsid

I accepted them. My fingers trembled slightly with excitement. Kenneth's money was finally in my hands. This time, I was genuinely thrilled. However, I wore a devastated look on the surface. I sneered inwardly, took a deep breath, and forced myself to calm down. My voice was choked with emotion. "G-Get up first. Stop humiliating yourself in public..."He looked as though he'd been granted a reprieve and hurriedly scrambled to his feet. I turned my back on him and our neighbors and sniffled. "Let's talk after I calm down." Right after saying that, I clutched the stack of cards, walked back into my bedroom, and shut the door. The moment the door clicked shut, all the sorrow vanished from my face, and my eyes lit up. My first step was a total success. Now, it was time to make that shameless couple pay an even steeper price. …After getting my hands on his money, I pretended to forgive Kenneth, albeit reluctantly, while secretly setting my plan in motion. I knew him all

My hands and feet turned ice-cold, and hatred surged in my eyes. I wanted nothing more than to rush over and kill Kenneth and Roxana. But I couldn't do that just yet. I didn't emerge from my hiding spot until they had left in post-coital bliss. The air still reeked of their revolting rendezvous. After getting into the car, I created an alt account without a moment's hesitation. I clipped the most explicit part of the video and posted it online. The video had been censored to cover their explicit parts, so it didn't qualify as the distribution of pornography. It spread like wildfire. I sat in the car, watching the group chat notifications and repost alerts pop up one after another on my phone. I felt perfectly calm. Wasn't Kenneth so sure I'd always forgive him? Now, it was time for everyone to see what kind of lowlifes he and his beloved really were! …In less than an hour, the video had gone viral. I timed it just right and beat them home. I rushed into my bedroom, locked

Roxana had probably been pestering Kenneth relentlessly in the last few days. Three days later, when I brought up the deal again, his attitude had softened considerably. "Here, take this." He handed me a card. "Be extremely careful," he reminded me sternly."Don't worry." I accepted it with a sweet smile. "I won't let you down." The moment I stepped out of the house, the smile on my face instantly vanished. I'd won this first round. However, the real battle had only just begun. …After getting my hands on the money, I pretended to be busy setting up the business on the surface while secretly keeping a close eye on Kenneth's every move. He went to Roxana's place more and more frequently. His excuses were always the same—meeting clients. It was laughably clumsy. One evening, he told me he had a business dinner on the outskirts of the city. I had installed a mini tracker on his car beforehand, and I watched it stop next to a wetland park three miles from the golf course. I

"Absolutely." I inched closer to Kenneth and lowered my voice. "Briar told me it's a pretty big shipment, and we have to pay the full amount upfront within the next couple of days. If we can buy the whole lot, we can make at least 150 grand by reselling it." 150 grand was no small amount. Kenneth leaned back into the cushions. "It sounds like a good deal, but we don't have that much cash on hand right now." "I know." I took his hand. "So I was thinking… why don't we ask Mr. Fern to return the money we lent him? This deal is practically guaranteed to make a profit. We can pay him back as soon as we wrap it up. We can even give him an extra 20 grand as interest."His fingers twitched slightly before he casually withdrew his hand and picked up his glass to take a sip. "Mr. Fern's cash flow still hasn't recovered. It wouldn't be right for us to ask him for our money back now." I sneered inwardly. It wouldn't be appropriate, my ass. He hadn't lent Mr. Fern money at all. He'd used it

By the time I drove near the wildlife park, I could already see from afar that the rescue operation had ended. The ambulances and park management vehicles had their flashing lights on. Sam and Margaret were being helped to their feet. Their faces were pale, and they looked visibly shaken. Kendall's hair was a mess, and her eyes were red and puffy. A large chunk of her hair had been ripped out by an animal, leaving her with a bald patch. I parked my car and strutted over in my high heels. I plastered a worried look on my face. "Sam, Margaret, Kendall, are you alright? You guys almost gave me a heart attack! I rushed over as soon as I received your call, but traffic was terrible."I stepped forward and reached out to support Margaret. Kenneth marched toward me, veins bulging on his forehead. He seized my wrist so tightly that my bones ached. "Where the hell were you earlier, Morgiana Brooks? Why didn't you answer any of my calls? Do you have any idea how close Mom, Dad, and Ke
