Ivy

I pushed the door shut behind me and just stood there breathing like I’d run a marathon even though I’d only walked from the cop car block earlier. My chest felt tight, like somebody had their fist around my heart and kept squeezing every time I thought about Mom in that cell. Jade jumped up from the couch right away, eyes all puffy and red.

“Ivy what happened at the station? You were gone forever. Is Mom okay? Did they say when she can come home?”

Kai stood there in the kitchen still holdi

IvyI sat in the passenger seat of Officer Daniels’ car. My arm burned like fire where that girl scratched me. My cheek felt big and hot, like someone pumped it full of air. I could still taste the salt from my tears and a little blood on my lip. The torn uniform stuck to my skin. Makeup ran down my face. I looked a mess. I knew it without even seeing myself in the mirror. The car smelled clean like coffee. Daniels started the engine and pulled out of the parking lot. The club lights got smaller behind us. I did not say anything at first. My hands shook in my lap. Everything from the night kept playing in my head the slap, the yelling, Lena’s smirk, Kai’s face.Daniels drove slow and careful. He did not turn on the radio. He just looked straight ahead. After a few minutes, he reached behind my seat and pulled out a bottle of water.“Here,” he said. His voice was calm and low. “Drink some. You look like you need it.”I took the bottle with my good hand. The cold plastic felt good. I d

IvyI pushed the door shut behind me earlier that night but now everything was blowing up worse than I ever thought it could. My arm burned where that crazy girl scratched me and my cheek felt fat and hot from her slap. I was still tasting those stupid tears I wiped away in the break room when the door flew open again and in walked Lena like she owned the damn place. She had that big smirk on her face, hips moving slow like she was in a music video or something, eyes locked right on me. She did not look shocked at all. She looked happy, like she had been waiting for this exact mess.“Wow, Ivy,” she said right away, voice all sweet but sharp enough to cut. “Can’t even get through one shift without starting shit? No wonder your mom’s where she is.”That hit me so hard I felt it in my stomach first. Then the anger came rushing up my throat like vomit. My hands started shaking again and the scratches on my arm stung worse. I was so tired, so done with every single person in my life. “What

Jade jumped up from the couch right away, eyes all puffy and red.“Ivy what happened at the station? You were gone forever. Is Mom okay? Did they say when she can come home?”Kai stood there in the kitchen still holding that dumb mug of tea like he was some kind of hero making drinks while his ex caused all this mess. He looked at me with those big worried eyes that used to make me feel safe but now just made me want to throw something. “You look dead on your feet, Ivy. Sit down. Drink this. I’ll heat up some food. You need to rest, seriously. Your mom wouldn’t want you running yourself into the ground like this.”I laughed but it came out all sharp and ugly. “Rest? Oh that’s rich coming from you, Kai. My mo

Ivy"This is total bullshit," I muttered under my breath loud enough that the lady next to me gave me a weird look. I stood up again and marched back to the desk. "Please. She is my mom and she defended my sister. That Lena woman started the whole thing by slapping and insulting us. Mom just reacted. Can you at least tell me if she is okay or let me talk to a supervisor?"The cop sighed like I was the most annoying person he had seen all week. "We are handling it. Sit back down."I did not sit. I stood right there with my eyes burning hot and the tears started coming even though I kept telling myself not to cry here in front of these strangers who did not give a damn. My shoulders shook and I wiped my face with my sleeve but the tears kept falling faster. "Nobody is helping her at all. She was in the hospital before this having a bad episode and now she is locked up like she is dangerous. It is not right. She was protecting us and you people do not even care."My voice got louder and

Ivy I sat there on that old couch with my hands shaking so bad I had to shove them under my legs just to stop staring at them. Jade and Kai had come back hours ago without Mom and the way they said it so casual like it was no big deal made my stomach twist into knots. They left her in jail. Just like that. My chest kept getting tighter and tighter and my head would not stop spinning with all the terrible things that could happen to her in there. What if the other women picked on her or the guards treated her rough or she forgot to take her medicine and started yelling at everyone again. Jade looked completely wiped out with her eyes all red and puffy but she kept repeating that it would be okay like saying it enough times would make it true. Kai just stood by the kitchen counter looking guilty as hell like he knew deep down this whole mess had his name written all over it from that stupid ex or whatever she was."You two just left her there?" I said and my voice came out way higher a

Jade The ride to the hospital felt too long even though Kai drove like he was trying to set a new record. I sat in the passenger seat picking at the giant shirt I still had on because I didn’t have time to change properly. My hair was a mess, my eyes were still puffy from earlier crying, and every second I kept thinking about Ivy back at the apartment finally getting some sleep. “You sure you don’t want me to go in alone?” Kai asked, glancing over for the third time. His voice had that half-worried, half-annoyed tone he used when he knew we were all being difficult but still wanted to help.“I said I’m handling it,” I snapped back, but not too mean. “You can stay in the car if you’re scared of my mom.”“I’m not scared. I’m just mentally preparing for whatever circus this is.” He tapped the steering wheel. “Your family really doesn’t do anything halfway, huh?”“Welcome to the show. Population: us. Tickets are trauma and expired milk.”He laughed under his breath but didn’t push it. G

~Ava~I shoved the last bite of cold egg into my mouth like it was poison I needed to get rid of fast, chewed twice, swallowed hard, then stood up so quick the chair scraped loud enough to make Chloe flinch.“Gotta pee,” I blurted, already turning toward the sliding door. “And, uh, shit, I just rem

Ava These days the days seemed to have 18 hours and not 24 urghhh, the sun already blasting through the windows way too bright for how wrecked I felt inside, but we were all up and moving because Chloe had this big idea to make breakfast outside on the patio, like some happy family bullshit, eggs
