Cielle's POV.

I stood still with the file in my trembling hands until I realized I had lost everything.

My house, my name, my identity, my husband, my child, my empire, and maybe my sanity.

I had lost it all to them, a cost of their betrayal.

"Come on now, I do not have all day. Sign it up," she said and threw a pen at me with so much force it landed on my face.

"Ah," I winced in pain as the lid of the pen made a small cut on my face.

Hurriedly, I picked it up and scribbled my signature on the paper.

The prison bars clicked open, and a policeman, who I didn't realize was standing behind Ashley, entered and grabbed the paper from my hand.

"I'm glad to see that you have finally accepted defeat, Cielle. So, I will let you live," she said and walked away just like that, leaving me in the darkness, in the abyss of her betrayal.

I returned to my previous position right there in the dark and slowly accepted my fate.

***

A year later.

I had lived in the shadows.

I had come to accept the darkness as my new identity.

Though I wondered when it was going to end, I never expected anything.

I knew I was forgotten.

I knew my name had been erased.

But all that was questioned when the policeman dragged me out of the cell.

"You have a visitor," he said, as his grip on my arm made me wince in pain. The brightness from the light I rarely experienced burned my eyes.

"Cielle Coleman," a strange baritone acknowledged, and I stiffened, my eyes struggling to catch a glimpse of the stranger's face.

"Who are you?

Why are you here? Let me go!

I have done nothing wrong, let me go!"

I tried to run back, but the policeman held me in place, my feeble attempt no match for his strong grip.

"Let her be, officer," the voice commanded, and the officer released my arm.

"You can call me your savior.

The man who has come to give you redemption," he said, and my eyes finally opened slowly as they landed on him.

His tall, dominating figure, bright eyes, and emotionless face sent shivers down my spine as I tried really hard to remember where I had met him before.

Nothing and no one came to mind.

I didn't know this man; he was a complete stranger.

"Who are you?

And what do you want from me?" I asked as I wrapped my arms around my body, feeling weak and frightened in front of him.

"I just told you, Cielle. I'm your redemption, and I have brought a proposal you cannot refuse," he said. His eyes flickered something sinister, intentional—something that brought heat into my body.

"What do you mean?

Did Ethan send you here?

Or was it Ashley?" I questioned as I felt belittled by his presence.

"I signed the divorce papers.

What else do they want from me?

They took all I had... my baby, they killed my baby."

I choked as I felt tears well up in my eyes.

His face hardened as he watched me quietly.

"Do you want to make them pay?" His question came as a shock, and I swallowed hard as I tried to read the expression on his face. There was nothing.

"Don't you want to make him pay?

Don't you want to make Ethan pay for making you suffer so much?

For taking away your company, your legacy, your hard-built empire?

Don't you want to make him pay for his betrayal?" he said, this time taking steps towards me.

"All you have to do is ask, Cielle, and I will bring him to his knees." He closed the distance between us, and I realized my back was against the wall.

"I can help you ruin him.

I can help you make him pay.

I can get you out of here, grant you freedom, and give you revenge..."

I cut his words short, "why?

Why do you want to save me?

How do you know me, and why are you really here?" I asked as I bit hard on my lips, an attempt not to scream.

"Because..." He averted my eyes, and I could finally breathe. But he brought them back.

"Of course I want something in return.

The deed to Ethan's family's ranch."

With a tilted head, my eyes narrowed, as his proposal was too good to be true.

A deed?

"Why?" I mouthed as I felt his hot breath on my face.

"Because I want it just as much as you want revenge on your ex-husband.

It's going to be a simple partnership.

The ranch for your revenge."

Although the evil in his eyes begged me to run away and to hide, for some reason, I was willing to trust him.

To trust the man who was willing to help me regain my freedom and to get revenge.

"Yes, I accept... I will do anything to make them pay." I shuddered as I struggled to keep my eyes fixed on him.

"Good girl." He growled, scooping my face into his palm.

***

An hour later, I was free, in fresh clothes and away from the prison bars.

I followed him silently to where I presumed to be his house, as I waited patiently for him to voice out how I would get my revenge.

"You must be tired. Get a good night's sleep. I will see you in the morning," he broke the silence as he led me into a room.

I felt vulnerable, but yet eager to strike.

My heart raced as I processed the fact that I was finally free.

"No…" I shrieked, "I don't want to sleep.

I want to take my revenge on them," I voiced, and he raised a brow at my words.

"You promised to help me take revenge, right? Then why are we here?

Why have you brought me here?"

His head tilted to the side as he picked his words.

"You seem so feisty all of a sudden.

Are you sure you're ready to face them?"

He asked in the calmest of tones, and I swallowed hard.

"Yes, yes I am.

I'm ready to make them pay," I breathed as I felt my skin burn with hate, my boiling blood fueled with anger.

He dipped his hand into his jacket's pocket and brought out a pistol.

"Argh..." I gasped as he stretched it out to me.

"Here you go then...

You're ready, right? Go take your revenge then."

My hands trembled as I grabbed the gun from his grip, my mind certain of its mission.

To kill Ethan and Ashley.

Cielle's POV. "Why did you have to pull me so hard?" I snapped as Zayn pulled me to his chest, his hand landing on my wrist."Because we are the center of attention."He said with a smirk, and I realized he had a microphone in his hands."Good day, ladies and gentlemen."He began helping me regain my balance, and soon cameras were clicking, paparazzi forming a crowd in front of us."Welcome to our party. Today we are announcing our engagement to the world.Meet my fiancée, Cielle Coleman."He said, and I gasped, looking at him, but was quick to curtail my shock."Enjoy the party..."He added, pulling me closer for the one thousand and one pictures that came after."What the hell are you doing?" I whispered as I forced a smile, the lights from the cameras flashing brightly on my face."Just smile, fiancée. We are going to be in the headlines." He said, his hand still on my waist. Not being able to bear the bright lights any longer, I pulled away and walked hastily out of the c

Cielle's POV. I returned to my room to see Zinge sitting on the bed, his head bowed as if in some sort of meditation."Arghmm," I feigned clearing my throat as I walked into the room, grabbing his attention."Where were you?" He asked coldly and I pushed a shrug off my shoulder."I umm..." I stuttered as I sat next to him."I felt a bit suffocated, so I went outside for a little fresh air." I lied, avoiding his gaze."You could have opened the windows. They are big enough to have you pass through." He said and I rolled my eyes."Why are you here?" I asked abruptly, feeling uncomfortable by his presence."It seems you don't want me in here.It is my house after all." He said, his tone a bit braggy, and I turned to face him."Well, I know it's your house, but this is my room now.You can't just walk in here anytime you please. If I can recall, when I walked into your room, you acted out a whole drama accusing me of snooping and wanting to glare at your body."I said too quickly

Cielle's POV. The proceedings began, and the plaintiff presented the case.My name was mentioned, and I heard Ashley's lawyer accusing me of committing fraud against the government using my company's name, and then trying to escape the consequences. My breath thickened, but I felt Zayn's hand on mine."Keep calm… It's going to be fine," he assured me once more, and I let out a heavy breath.Soon, I was called to the witness box, the plaintiff's lawyer ready to question me."So, Ms. Coleman, is it true that your marriage with Mr. Blackwell ended suddenly?" he asked. I turned to Zayn and then back to him."Yes, we're divorced," I replied calmly, my hands pressed against the stand."Then you're agreeing that your marriage ended because of your unfaithfulness?"He accused, and I furrowed my brows."I never said that! It was Ethan who was unfaithful," I snapped, and the audience gasped."Can't you see him with Ashley? He cheated with Ashley, and I signed the divorce papers," I retor

Zayn's POV. "Where is she?" My jaw clenched as I glared at the old lady shivering in her chair."Where is Monica?" I asked, moving closer to her, and her face went pale. When I walked into the house, I only found her sitting on the chair, and the fright on her face proved that she was expecting me."Tell me, where is she?" I asked once more, bending to her level."She… please don't hurt her," she stuttered, and I scoffed."That depends, I'm already losing my patience," I gritted, looking straight into her eyes.Monica wouldn't have gone far, maybe she was in too much of a hurry to leave the old lady behind."Who are you? Her mother?"I asked, and the stale look on her face approved my words."She wouldn't have left you here then," I stood up straight, regaining my upright posture."It's stupid to leave her mother here when she knows I'm coming for her," I said, stepping away."Please do not hurt her... Monica didn't do anything wrong." She shrieked, falling on her knees."I pro

Cielle's POV. "What... What are you doing?" I shrieked as I felt caged to the wall.He was only an inch away, droplets sliding from his hair down his chest, the towel at his waist hanging so loose that I feared it would drop.I wanted to speak again, to rebuke him, but instead, I inhaled the warm, nutty scent of hazelnuts that clung to him, making me swallow hard with shallow thoughts. He smelt like a peaceful distraction, like roasted cocoa, and I wanted more.Wait, what the hell was I doing?I wasn’t attracted to him, definitely not.But why did my pulse triple?"What... What did you have to say to me?" I mumbled, shaking my head, a silly attempt to stop myself from wallowing in his scent."You don't have to be shirtless or so close to me to say it, do you? You can step back and say it.I'm all ears," I said, trying to sound tough. He tilted his head, his lips curved into a smirk. "I thought I was making you curious, wasn't I?"He said, and I immediately swung my head to di

Cielle's POV. The dryness of my lips was nothing compared to that of my throat. It stung, and each swallow I took pierced deeper. My own saliva ran down like the sharp edges of a sword.I forced my eyes open and realized I was not where I was when everything went void. The whole place was painted white, the smell of antiseptic invading my nostrils."Glad to see you are finally awake," his voice growled, and I turned my neck slowly, my eyes landing on him.He was seated on a chair just a bit away from me, his eyes darkened and narrowed, his face plain and expressionless as he folded his hands against his chest."How are you feeling?" he asked calmly, and I shifted slightly on the bed."What happened?" I asked weakly, and he stood up from his seat."You have been unconscious for five days. You were trapped in the fire, you inhaled a lot of smoke before I could find you.I brought you to my doctor. Luckily, you didn't sustain any serious burns." He took a breath, breaking his wo
