Chapter 2

Penulis: Shelley Broth
On the other end, Mom's anxious voice came through again.

"Sonya, the doctors have all said you require treatment abroad for your heart condition. You barely survived, so why are you insisting on staying in the country doing rescue work?

"You're still so young, yet you're throwing your life away! If this continues, what will happen to Callie? Is Austin really so great that you'd go to such lengths for him?"

Indeed, was Austin so great?

At Mom's words, tears rolled down my cheeks once more.

I had always been the strongest member of my rescue team. Climbing mountains, wading through water, braving the wind and rain—I shattered every stereotype that women couldn't do rescue work.

No matter how tough or exhausting it got, I never shed a single tear.

But today, I truly lost count of how many times I had cried.

I steadied my voice. "Mom, I'll do what you say. I'll go abroad for treatment. But I need you to do me a favor."

Mom immediately relaxed, her voice softening. "Of course, of course! I'll help you with anything."

After hanging up, I wandered aimlessly down the street.

"Sonya, where the hell have you been?" A furious shout, followed by the crisp scent of mint.

Austin grabbed me from behind and pulled me into a crushing embrace. I struggled, kicking and pushing to break free. But he locked me in place, almost as if he wanted to press me into his very bones.

His breathing was ragged, each exhale sending goosebumps down my neck.

"Why didn't you answer my calls? Why did you run away from the hospital?"

His voice trembled slightly, laced with urgency and unease. His arms tightened around me until I could barely breathe.

His expression was filled with turbulent emotions, his gaze reflecting pure panic. His eyes especially—fierce, proud, and heartbroken—spoke volumes. Yet, they were trapped within this gentle exterior.

For a moment, it almost made me believe Austin still loved me. But the marks on his neck from Dion's kisses in the hospital room were still fresh.

I took a subtle step back, my tone indifferent. "I just needed some air."

Austin's hand froze mid-air, his gaze instantly dimming.

When I turned to leave, he suddenly swept me up again. Ignoring my protests, he shoved me into his luxury car.

"You're going to the rehabilitation center now. We'll talk about everything else later."

I bit my lip and stayed silent.

As the car stopped at the entrance of the private rehabilitation center, he moved to help me out, only to be interrupted by a small but furious voice shouting from a distance.

"You meanie! Let go of my mommy!"

The next second, Callie charged over and punched Austin in the leg as hard as she could.

Austin froze, his gaze landing on Callie's face—one that was so strikingly similar to his own. In that instant, his expression turned to stone.

I hadn't expected that the rehabilitation center Austin brought me to was the same one where Callie received her treatments.

I immediately pulled Callie behind me to shield her.

But Austin kept staring at her, his gaze whirling with disbelief. He grabbed my wrist and, in a low and shaking voice, asked, "Sonya, is she min—"

He couldn't even finish the sentence.

I avoided his burning gaze and said nothing. The calmer I was, the more frantic he became. He tightened his grip on my wrist to the point of pain, as if he wanted to crush my bones.

"How old is she? Why did you really leave me back then? We loved each other so much. What the hell were you hiding from me?"

Five years ago, we were college sweethearts. Everyone thought we were destined to walk down the aisle together. But that winter, while Austin was away on a business trip for his startup, I suddenly collapsed.

And from that moment on, our fates were forever changed.

What was so great about Sonya anyway? The air was thick with tension, and the police had already surrounded the area.Callie pressed her lips together, fighting back tears. In the silence, where even a pin drop could be heard, Austin said, "I already knew."Dion's smile froze, and the knife in her hand paused mid-air."W-what did you say?""Sonya's heart came from a rescue worker who sacrificed his life," Austin said slowly, his gaze locked onto Dion's. "The only reason Sonya returned to rescue work was to fulfill that stranger's dying wish."Step by step, he moved closer, his voice as cold as ice. "Dion, is this all you wanted to say?"So Austin had known all along.Panic flashed across Dion's face. Realizing how close he was, she instinctively pressed the blade tighter against Callie."Don't come any closer! One more step and I'll kill her!"My heart pounded violently as I nervously watched Callie. The tension made my feet tingle with numbness. I had already gone over coun

When I pulled away from Austin's embrace and took a step back, the light in his eyes instantly dimmed, as if a fog had settled over them.Only after creating distance did I notice he was wearing the same uniform as me."Hahaha. Sonya, our new recruit's not bad, right?"The team captain, a burly man, clapped me on the back as he introduced the newcomer. "You come from the same country! He's just joined today."Austin smiled faintly at me. At the corner of his lips, there was now a diamond stud.He had always been handsome, but the piercing added a rebellious, almost romantic edge. Women passing by couldn't help stealing glances.Yet he only looked at me, his gaze dark and piercing."Sonya, I know the truth now. Stop avoiding me, and let's start over, okay?"Austin spoke with pleading eyes, like a chastened child begging for forgiveness. But I remained unmoved."Austin, we're over."He bit his lip lightly, his tongue brushing against that diamond stud as if it were a habit."

Gritting his teeth, Austin nearly choked Dion to death."Dion, how dare you? How dare you harm my woman and my daughter?" he roared.Dion thrashed desperately, tears and snot mixing with saliva as they dripped down her face. She begged frantically, "Austin, it wasn't me! It was all their idea!"Their friends, sensing danger, rushed forward to pull Austin off.But Austin's eyes burned with bloodthirsty madness. He kicked one of the men to the ground, then grabbed a golf club from a nearby rack."Ah!" Screams tore through the room.Blood splattered across Dion's face. She lost her mind in terror, shrieking until Austin ripped off his engagement ring from his neck and shoved it into her mouth.…As soon as the plane landed, I rushed over with Callie and threw myself into Mom's arms."Mom, you're finally back!"Mom wrapped me in her arms with a face full of tenderness and gently rubbed my nose."Why do you always come up with such crazy ideas? "Austin, you bastard! Do you know why Sonya left you back then? She suddenly developed a serious heart disease. The doctors said she had a year to live at most. Even if she received a donor heart, the success rate of the surgery was only 20 percent!"Sonya didn't want to ruin your life. After thinking about it, she was left with no choice but to break up with you. My precious daughter finally got a little better after receiving treatment abroad, but then you went and got her killed!"The more Austin heard, the paler his face became. By the end, he staggered a step forward, his voice hoarse and shaking."S-she had a heart disease? How could that be?"He had always believed the reason Sonya left him was because he was poor. All these years—his hatred, his anger, the way he had disrespected, toyed with, and humiliated Sonya—what had they all been built on?Another slap landed on his face with a loud smack, causing his cheek to burn with pain. But no matter how much it stung, it could

They immediately tried to calm him down."Austin, it's all special effects! We were just playing around!""Yeah, the firefighters will be here soon. Don't actually throw yourself in!""That woman is so worthless. They're just going to inhale a little smoke, that's all. Don't tell me you're actually gonna go in. Haha."One of his friends had meant to lighten the mood. But before he could finish, Austin spun around and punched him in the face.A sickening crack echoed as bones shattered."Get lost!" "Sonya, I'm sorry. I didn't mean for this to happen. This time, it really wasn't my intention."Austin's voice was soft and hoarse, as if he truly was filled with regret. But once the kiss ended, he stood up, and the necklace around his neck slipped out of his shirt. The cold silver chain held a dazzling engagement ring, its brilliance shining brightly in the room.…A week later, Callie and I went to the amusement park. The peace felt surreal—like it was a lifetime ago—until a sudden phone call shattered it.Austin's name flashed on the screen. But when I answered, I was greeted with Dion's tearful, saccharine voice."Sonya, bad news! Austin's in trouble again. He's trapped in an abandoned factory. It's dangerous there, and the firefighters are taking too long!"My heart tightened. It was only a matter of time before the inevitable happened.I brought Callie with me to the scene.Thick black smoke billowed into the sky, the scorching heat so intense I felt like my skin was g
