Chapter 1

"Kenneth, didn't Cass say this gym belonged to our family? Who's this young man?"

At that moment, my sixty-year-old father-in-law, Charlie Moore, rose awkwardly from the couch, his face a mix of confusion and worry.

His calloused hands fidgeted with the hem of his jacket. The flush that had colored his cheeks moments earlier, from the excitement of watching the match, had drained to a sickly white now that this stranger had insulted him.

Charlie was a die-hard boxing fan. In his younger days, he'd even trained with the state team, before a string of injuries forced him into early retirement so he could support my wife, Cassidy Moore, through school.

We'd been married five years, and in that time Charlie had come to treat me like his own son. My own family ties had always been thin, and it was Charlie's steady presence over the years that had filled the gap my father never had. That was exactly why I'd believed Cassidy would make a good wife too, and why I'd said yes when she proposed to me.

Three years ago, after I bought this top-tier boxing gym, I'd handed Cassidy full nominal control of it, just to give her something to do.

Today was Charlie's sixtieth birthday, but Cassidy had begged off, claiming her company had a deal worth tens of millions to close and no time to spare for her own father. So I'd cleared every meeting on my calendar myself and rented out the box with the best view in the house, hoping to give the old man a good day.

I never imagined that three years of trust and letting go of the reins would turn my own property into someone else's playground for throwing their weight around.

I took a breath, pulled Charlie behind me to shield him, and kept my voice low and steady.

"Charlie, don't worry. I'm here. This world's got its share of mad dogs who've lost their minds. We don't need to lower ourselves to his level."

At that, the man's temper flared instantly, his sharp features twisting into something needlessly cruel.

"Hey, punk! Who are you calling a mad dog?!

"I think you two are the ones who've lost it, hoping for a payout! Family property, is that what you call it?

"This old relic's dressed like he crawled out of a dumpster. He thinks a place like this is for people like him?

"Not satisfied showing off his own poverty, he had to drag some half-dead old man along to keep up the act!

"What, are you two the family of the janitor who scrubs this gym's toilets, sneaking in on a stolen key?!"

He paused, looking me up and down like I was a piece of merchandise, contempt dripping from every glance.

"Not bad looking, for a beggar. Too bad you're broke. Vermin like you are only fit to wallow in the mud for the rest of your miserable lives!"

Charlie was so furious he could barely catch his breath. He jabbed a finger at the man. "You... how dare you talk like that!"

I'd had enough. I stepped forward and fixed him with a cold stare.

"You keep calling us broke. What exactly do you think you are?

"The real controlling owner of this gym is a man named Kenneth Cutler. Look it up in the corporate registry if you don't believe me.

"You keep going on about this being your territory. I'd say you're in the late stages of some delusion.

"This is your last warning. Take your people and get out. Push me any further, and not even whatever woman's backing you will be able to save you."

Maybe it was the authority I'd carried for years as someone used to being in charge, but the man flinched under my stare and, for a moment, couldn't find his words.

He recovered quickly, though, and shouted toward the gym manager who'd been hovering just outside the door, peeking in.

"Dennis! Get security in here and throw these two lunatics out, now!"

Dennis Owen came scurrying in immediately, bowing and scraping at the man.

"Mr. Reese, please, calm yourself. I'll handle this right away. You mustn't let it upset you."

The moment he turned to face me, his ingratiating smile vanished, replaced by something vicious.

"Listen here, I'd advise you not to push your luck. Mr. Reese here is the man our CEO, Ms. Moore, holds closest to her heart. Tonight's whole event was cleared out specifically by Ms. Moore, just to put a smile on Mr. Reese's face.

"Go ask around Kensford's boxing circles what the name Cassidy Moore actually means. She only has to lift a finger, and neither of you will ever work in this city again!"

The two of them stood there, preening like dogs riding on someone else's power, noses practically pointed at the ceiling.

But hearing Cassidy's name hit me like a lightning bolt.

'Cassidy? My wife? The woman who straightens my tie every morning before I leave for work, who'd sworn to be good to me for the rest of her life, is out here keeping a kept man on the side?'

I stared at the man they'd called Tyson Reese, unable to believe it, searching his smug face for some sign this was all a mistake.

But the pride and self-satisfaction in his eyes were real, unmistakably real.

He was basking in Dennis's flattery, and the way he carried himself, like the true man of the house, wasn't something he could have faked.

My heart felt like it had been dropped into a freezer, the cold spreading through me limb by limb.

That was when my eyes, without my permission, landed on Tyson's thick wrist.

After Cassidy and Tyson were taken away by the police, the hallway finally settled back into quiet.A week later, Charlie woke up.He'd survived, but the damage to his brain had left his movements slow and his speech halting. When the police came to the hospital to take his statement, tears of pain welled up in his clouded old eyes.I held his calloused hand and asked him gently. "Charlie... what do you want to do about Cassidy?"Charlie's lips trembled. It was a long while before he spoke."I've lived an honest life, my whole life. I have no daughter who's an animal like that. Kenneth, whatever the law says she deserves, that's what she gets. Let her rot in a cell and pay for what she's done."With Charlie's testimony and the ironclad cloud footage on top of it, the case against Cassidy and Tyson was sealed shut.Three months later, the court handed down its final verdict.Tyson was sentenced to seven years for intentional assault causing serious injury, with the court noting

"The Cutler Group?"Cassidy stared at me in shock, as though seeing, for the first time, the man she'd shared a bed with for five years."You... you're from the wealthy Cutler family? That's impossible! You were supposed to be just an ordinary...""Just some fool who cooked for you at home out of the goodness of his heart, to spare your poor, fragile ego? Is that what you were going to say?"I finished her sentence for her, my eyes carrying no warmth at all."Cassidy, I gave you three years. I gave you resources, connections, a position as CEO that let you shine. I thought it might earn me your genuine loyalty."And what did you do with it? You took my money to keep a piece of trash like Tyson, and to feed his vanity in front of you, you had my hands and feet broken and threw your critically injured father into an alley!"And now you have the nerve to bring me forged evidence and try to force me out of this marriage with nothing?"The instant I finished speaking, the elevator d

The next morning, Charlie was finally wheeled out of the operating room. His life had been saved, but the damage to his brain was severe enough that he was still deep in a coma. They moved him to the ICU.Watching the old man through the glass, hooked up to a tangle of tubes, frail and helpless, the fire in my chest only burned hotter. That was when a flurry of footsteps echoed from the far end of the hallway.Cassidy came marching toward me, flanked by Tyson and a lawyer carrying a briefcase. After a night of careful planning, she'd apparently reclaimed her air of untouchable CEO poise."Kenneth." Cassidy stopped in front of me. There wasn't a trace of concern for her critically ill father in her eyes, only cold calculation."I've already talked to the doctors about my father's condition. I'll cover all the medical bills, so you don't need to worry about it. I came here today to settle things between us."She flicked her eyes toward the lawyer behind her, and he stepped forwar

Reading that message, the sneer at the corner of my mouth deepened.'Cassidy, Cassidy. So you really are a selfish, scheming, small-minded monster.'Instead of rushing to the hospital to see her own father, whose life hung in the balance, Cassidy's first move was to stay behind at the gym and destroy the evidence. If Charlie died, or ended up a vegetable, Tyson would be looking at criminal charges for intentional assault. And as the person in charge of the gym, Cassidy wouldn't just lose her reputation. She might well end up implicated and thrown in prison herself.More than anything, she was afraid I'd call the police.Once the authorities got involved, three years of buried, dirty bookkeeping at the gym, along with her sordid affair with a kept man, would come out into the light for good. She wasn't willing to give up the wealth and status she had now, and she certainly wasn't willing to lose her shining title of CEO.Sure enough, before long, a video titled "Freeloading Husb

"Let go of him! Get away from me, all of you!"Cassidy shoved the towering boxer aside like a woman possessed and pulled Charlie's limp body into her arms, shaking so hard it looked like she was coming apart."Dad! Dad, wake up! It's me, Pumpkin! How are you even here?! Why is there so much blood?!"Tyson, startled by how frantic she looked, spoke up hesitantly."Cass, what... what did you just call him? Isn't he supposed to be some con artist? Why are you holding onto a beggar like that?!""Shut up!"Cassidy whipped around, her eyes bloodshot, and roared at Tyson and Dennis."Call an ambulance! He's my father! If anything happens to him, I'll make every single one of you pay with your lives!"Dennis flinched violently and fumbled his phone out to dial with shaking hands.Beside him, Tyson had gone pale, one hand clamped over his mouth, too afraid to make a sound. He never could have imagined that the half-dead old man he'd just ordered beaten was the actual father of his sug

Cassidy had arrived. At the sound of her voice, Tyson immediately pulled his foot off my hand.He threw himself into her arms as though he'd suffered some unbearable wrong."Cass! You're finally here! I was so scared!""Don't be scared, baby, I'm here now. Whoever dared touch you, I'll destroy them."Cassidy wrapped her arms around him, stroking his back with a tenderness and urgency in her voice I'd never once heard directed at me.Then she lifted her head and swept the box with a look of cold fury. Her eyes landed first on Charlie, still lying in a pool of blood. His face was so covered in blood by then that from a distance, he was barely recognizable.I watched a flash of disgust cross Cassidy's eyes, the way someone might look at a bag of garbage. Her gaze moved on to me next, still pinned to the floor by the boxer. The second she got a clear look at my face, her pupils shrank, and panic spread across her features."Ken... Kenneth?! What are you doing here?!"Seeing he
