Kylie’s POV

I glanced at the clock on the wall. It was 5:30 a.m. I woke up way too early—even before my alarm went off.

It’s not that I’m a morning person. I actually hate mornings. They’re stressful.

But today’s different. I’m kind of excited about going to school. I know there’s nothing to really be excited about—I’ve heard school is stressful—but I want to experience it for myself. It’s definitely better than being homeschooled: waking up, binge-watching N*****x, waiting for the teacher to show up, learning for maybe an hour, eating, then going to bed.

That’s freaking boring.

Okay, enough about that. I’m in a crisis. Someone help me—anybody!

I sighed in disappointment as I stared at my wardrobe.

It’s not like I don’t have clothes to wear to school—I do. In fact, I have too many, and that’s the problem. I never imagined owning fancy, expensive clothes would become an issue.

I don’t even know what to wear or how to disguise myself. Everything is just too convincing.

I ruffled my hair in frustration.

Oh God, I think I need Mom’s help.

I dropped my towel, applied lotion, threw on a baggy top and a pair of shorts, and headed to Mom’s room.

I love baggy tops.

Well, the real reason is that they help me imagine how I’ll look wearing my future boyfriend’s shirts.

Silly me.

I giggled at the thought.

I knocked gently on her door, surprised when she actually heard it.

"Maya, I’ll come downstairs for breakfast," she said.

She probably thought I was one of the maids. There are so many of them. I wonder who Maya is.

I shrugged.

"Kye’s mom, it’s me," I said, knocking again.

"Kylie?"

I rolled my eyes. "Who else would call you Kye’s mom?"

"Silly child," she muttered as the door knob twisted and opened.

"You can’t just call me ‘Mom’ like a normal child?"

"Well, I’m not normal." I grinned.

She rolled her eyes. "So, what brings you to my room? Or do you miss me so much you couldn’t wait to see me?" She smiled.

I laughed. "Sorry to disappoint, but I came for your help—since you’re a makeup artist and all."

She squealed and rolled her eyes.

She’s weird.

"So, why the makeover?" she asked, walking to her closet and pulling out her makeup kit.

"Mom, don’t you remember? I’m going to school today. In disguise."

"Oh... school. I still don’t get why you can’t just study at home."

"Mom..."

"Okay, okay. But I hope I’m not giving you clown makeup."

"Mum, be serious!"

"I am serious. Alright, what do you want me to do?"

"I don’t know. Just work your magic," I smiled.

"Okay, I’ve got the perfect look. Sit." She pointed to the chair in front of the mirror.

I sat down, and she started working her magic.

My butt started aching—that’s one of the reasons I like light makeup. It doesn’t take this long.

"I’m done. And I still have the touch," she said proudly.

I was about to turn to the mirror, but she stopped me.

"Wait. Something’s still missing." She walked to her closet and came back with a pair of glasses.

She put them on me.

"Now I’m done. Take a look."

I turned to the mirror.

I looked different. It didn’t even look like I had makeup on, but my face had changed. There were freckles on my cheeks, and the glasses made me look like a nerd.

"So, how is it?"

"Did you even put makeup on me? It’s like you performed surgery."

She chuckled. "I barely touched your face—just some freckles and powder."

"Wait, that’s all? And I sat for hours?"

"You didn’t sit for hours! It’s just after six—you should be saying minutes," she grinned.

I rolled my eyes.

"I’m not even done yet," she said, heading back to her closet. She returned with a small box and a dye spray.

She removed the glasses and placed amber contact lenses in my eyes. Then, she sprayed the dye on my hair.

"Now you look like a hot nerd," she winked.

I giggled.

Ken burst into the room without knocking.

"Mom, I can’t find Kylie in her room. Did she leave for school already? It’s too early—" He stopped and turned to me. "Mom, who is she? ... Hi." He waved, blushing.

What is wrong with this one?

"Hey," I waved back.

He smiled shyly.

"She’s my daughter," Mom said.

"Huh?" He looked confused.

"Ken, why’s your face turning red?" I asked.

His face turned even redder. "Nothing!" he said, covering his cheeks. "Your voice sounds familiar. Like... my sister’s."

"Aww, you recognize my voice. That’s sweet."

"Wait—you’re Kylie?"

I nodded.

"Eew!" He made a disgusted face.

"What? Is it my fault you had a crush on me at first sight?"

"I did not!" he said defensively and stomped his foot.

"Really?" I raised a brow.

"Mom, I’m going to get ready for school," he said and walked out quickly.

Mom burst into laughter.

I turned to her. "Mom, you need to give him the talk."

"Why? He’s too young for that."

"Well, he’s not too young to have crushes."

"It’s not his fault—he saw a hot nerd. I am amazing," she said proudly.

I rolled my eyes and walked out.

"You can’t even say thank you!" she shouted after me.

"It’s your job—but you know I’m grateful. Love you, Mom!" I yelled.

"Love you too, baby," I heard her say.

Now, time to look for Ken.

"Ken, come here and listen to the talk! You’re too young to have crushes. Where are you? Come and listen!"

"I’m not interested!" he shouted from somewhere.

I giggled.

•Kylie "Finally, we have arrived. Phew!" Bob let out a long, dramatic sigh of relief as the large iron security gate slid open. He drove the car through, following the winding driveway. I pouted, tearing the crinkling wrapper off my next chocolate bar. So far, I had eaten six. Only six remained. Bob had bought them for me as a bribe to keep me from talking. "The way you said that made me feel like you do not like my presence." "Yes," he nodded his head, affirming my words as he put the car in park. "I do not like your presence. Anytime you are with me, I will always spend more than what I planned. I do not know how, but all I know is that it is your fault." "Well, I did not force you to spend money on me, did I?" I felt a flash of offense. "It was your choice to buy it. I did not ask you to buy it." He was indirectly calling me a gold digger, just like the way Kelly had insulted me. Well, it is not my fault I am blessed with rich dudes. I need to enjoy their wealth before I get m

•Kelly I twisted the doorknob. The hinge creaked loudly in the silence as the door swung open into blackness. "Why is it so dark?" I wondered aloud, my voice sounding flat in the dead air. I strained my eyes, trying to make out a shape, a person, anything. Reaching out, my fingers brushed against something cold. The wall. I slid my palm along the smooth paint, searching for the switch. My fingers finally found the small plastic nub, and I clicked it. Light flooded the entryway. I let out a completely ridiculous, high-pitched, girlish scream. Ashton was standing right in front of me, less than an inch from my face, his arms crossed and a stony expression on his face. When did he get here? And why was I screaming like that? I stopped, cleared my throat, and forced myself to stand up straight. "What is wrong with you?" I demanded, my voice rougher to make up for the scream. "Why were the lights switched off?" "How was your date?" he asked. His tone was so cold he completely ignor

  • Disguise   Chapter 54-Terrible mistake

The kiss was still lingering on her lips, a fading warmth against the cold night air, when the voice sliced through the moment. "Kylie, what the hell are you doing here?" Kylie ripped herself away from Kelly, her heart leaping into her throat. She spun towards the sound, her breath catching. Bob was standing at the entrance to the bridge, not ten feet away. He was not just angry. He was vibrating with a fury that seemed to make the air around him ripple. His face was a mask of disbelief, his neck cords standing out like ropes, and his eyes looked ready to pop from their sockets. "Bob, you just swore," Kylie giggled, a nervous, high-pitched sound. She reflexively put a hand to her mouth, but the humor died instantly. She knew that sound. Bob only swore when he was absolutely, terrifyingly furious. "Is that the damn answer I am looking for?" he shouted. The sound echoed off the old ironwork of the bridge. "Do you know how many times I called you?" Kylie's gaze immediately dropped t

  • Disguise   Chapter 53-gold digger

•Third person's POV The afternoon sun was still high, beating down on the cracked pavement of the bustling street. A river of people flowed around Kelly and Kylie, a mix of after-school uniforms and adults heading home from work. Cars rumbled by, smelling of hot metal and exhaust fumes. And people stared. An older woman sitting on a bus stop bench smiled softly at their joined hands, a nostalgic look in her eyes. A man in a stiff suit, however, shot them a look of pure disapproval, his lips thinning as he passed. Kelly felt the stares like a familiar, uncomfortable itch, the way he always did. Usually, the attention was just for him, a low-grade static of awareness that he had learned to ignore. But this was different. This time, the stares were for the two of them, for the sight of his calloused, slightly larger hand holding Kylie's smaller, warmer one. He kept his eyes forward, focusing on the rhythmic tap of Kylie's sneakers on the sidewalk. She, on the other hand, seemed to b
