Kylie’s POV

"Even with your glasses, you still can't see," a voice said. It sounded manly, with a British accent.

"I'm sorry," I mumbled, avoiding eye contact as I stepped out of the office. The only thing I caught was his blue eyes—and wow, they were pretty.

But that’s not what I should be thinking about right now. I should be focusing on finding my class.

My first period is History. Honestly, sometimes I wonder why we even study history. It’s all in the past—we should be focused on the future. I hate history. It’s boring as hell. Don’t even get me started on all those names and their so-called achievements that we’re supposed to memorize. Then you sit for the exam and boom—none of what you studied is there. Stressful.

How do I find this class? I wish someone—like the way Anna showed up earlier—would just pop up again.

Looks like luck is on my side. A girl came running towards me. She looked like she was in a hurry.

When she reached me, I grabbed her hand to stop her.

She glared at me. I quickly let go.

I cleared my throat and said, "I’m sorry, please... can you show me the way to the history class?"

"Well, I’m just heading there. Come with me," she said.

I sighed in relief. Thank God.

We walked silently through the hallway until we reached the classroom. Neither of us said a word. When we got to the door, she entered first and gestured for me to follow.

I stepped in and instantly felt nervous. Not because I was new, but because I was scared someone might recognize who I really am. I took a deep breath, gave myself a quick pep talk, and walked in, hoping to stay unnoticed.

"Gemma, late again. Just go and sit down. You know you're getting detention for an hour," the teacher said.

She looked young and pretty. I had expected someone older—history talks about old things, right?

"Okay, ma," the girl (Gemma, I guess) replied with an eye roll before going to her seat.

The teacher shook her head, clearly annoyed. Just as she turned to the board, she noticed me. She lowered her glasses slightly, raised a brow, and asked, "Who are you?"

"I’m the new student," I said, fidgeting with my bag strap.

"You’re Kylie Tanner?"

I nodded.

"The scholarship student? No one has ever passed our scholarship exams. You're the first." She smiled in awe.

I smiled awkwardly, not knowing what to say.

"What do you expect? After all, she’s a nerd," someone snickered from the back.

The class burst into laughter.

I hadn’t even realized I was holding my breath until I let it out.

At least it’s better than being worshipped just because you're famous.

"Silence, everybody!" the teacher snapped, and the room went quiet.

"Kylie, you can sit down. Ignore them—they’re just being silly."

I smiled and nodded before walking past her. Yes! No one recognized me. So happy.

I scanned the room for an empty seat but couldn’t find one. If I took off my makeup, I bet everyone would beg me to sit with them. But I prefer it this way.

Then I saw someone waving—it was the girl who had shown me to the principal's office.

What was her name again? Annie? Anna? I can't believe I’ve already forgotten.

I walked up to her.

"Hey, Kylie!" she said, waving.

She remembered my name. I really do have a terrible memory.

"Hi," I replied, smiling softly.

"You can sit here with me," she said, still smiling.

"Thanks." I sat down beside her.

She smiled again.

---

Turns out, I was wrong—History wasn’t boring at all. It was actually interesting. I guess it depends on who’s teaching.

The bell rang, interrupting the lesson.

I groaned.

"See you later, class," the teacher said and walked out.

"What do you have next?" Anna asked.

"Mathematics," I said, turning to her.

"Oh, I have Arts."

"Do you know where the Math class is?"

"Yeah, I saw it on my way here."

"Okay then. Bye. See you at lunch."

She waved and left. I headed to Math class, walking in boldly—no fear of being recognized now.

---

Math was okay. Not great, not awful—just normal.

I was waiting outside for Anna so we could go to the cafeteria.

Soon, she showed up.

"Annie!" I called out, waving.

She looked confused at first, then smiled like she had figured something out.

When she reached me, she asked, "Are you calling me Annie?"

"Did I?"

She chuckled. "My name is Anna, not Annie."

"But that’s what I called you."

"You did call me Annie."

I acted clueless. "No, I didn’t."

"You did... You know what? I’m starving," she said, her stomach growling loudly. She switched topics, which I was thankful for—but now I was even hungrier.

"Then let’s go to the cafeteria."

She smiled, and we walked together.

"Go ahead and order your food. I’ll save a seat for you," she said.

"What about you?"

"I always order before lunch break."

"Oh, okay." I walked to the counter.

"What would you like to order?" the lunch lady asked.

I stared at the options, overwhelmed. Everything looked so good. It had been forever since I had food like this. That keto diet had me craving sweets like crazy. I wanted everything.

"Having trouble choosing?" she asked.

"Yes," I admitted.

"Try the special—pepperoni pizza rolls. And maybe a soda to go with it?"

"Okay, I’ll take that."

"Which soda?"

"Coke, please." I smiled.

I took my tray and joined Anna at our table. She was sitting alone. I debated asking if she had other friends. It might seem rude... or maybe not. I was just curious.

Before I could say anything, loud screams erupted from different parts of the cafeteria.

"What’s happening?" I asked.

"I wish Camille was here," she muttered.

"Who’s Camille?"

"My best friend. She traveled and won’t be in school for two weeks."

"Oh, I’d love to meet her someday."

"Trust me, you’ll love her."

"So... what’s all the screaming about?"

"Just four gorgeous specimens who look f***ing hot. They’re totally worth the chaos." She sighed dreamily.

Then four boys walked in like they owned the place. Girls (and even some boys) swarmed them.

Some girls actually stood up to greet them.

I scoffed. High school drama. I rolled my eyes. I’ve seen more handsome guys than these ones.

Anna glared at me.

"Did I say that out loud?" I asked.

"Oh yes, you did."

I rolled my eyes again.

I wish one of them would trip.

Just then, one of them tripped and fell flat on the floor.

"Oops. Guess there really is power in the tongue."

•Kylie "Finally, we have arrived. Phew!" Bob let out a long, dramatic sigh of relief as the large iron security gate slid open. He drove the car through, following the winding driveway. I pouted, tearing the crinkling wrapper off my next chocolate bar. So far, I had eaten six. Only six remained. Bob had bought them for me as a bribe to keep me from talking. "The way you said that made me feel like you do not like my presence." "Yes," he nodded his head, affirming my words as he put the car in park. "I do not like your presence. Anytime you are with me, I will always spend more than what I planned. I do not know how, but all I know is that it is your fault." "Well, I did not force you to spend money on me, did I?" I felt a flash of offense. "It was your choice to buy it. I did not ask you to buy it." He was indirectly calling me a gold digger, just like the way Kelly had insulted me. Well, it is not my fault I am blessed with rich dudes. I need to enjoy their wealth before I get m

•Kelly I twisted the doorknob. The hinge creaked loudly in the silence as the door swung open into blackness. "Why is it so dark?" I wondered aloud, my voice sounding flat in the dead air. I strained my eyes, trying to make out a shape, a person, anything. Reaching out, my fingers brushed against something cold. The wall. I slid my palm along the smooth paint, searching for the switch. My fingers finally found the small plastic nub, and I clicked it. Light flooded the entryway. I let out a completely ridiculous, high-pitched, girlish scream. Ashton was standing right in front of me, less than an inch from my face, his arms crossed and a stony expression on his face. When did he get here? And why was I screaming like that? I stopped, cleared my throat, and forced myself to stand up straight. "What is wrong with you?" I demanded, my voice rougher to make up for the scream. "Why were the lights switched off?" "How was your date?" he asked. His tone was so cold he completely ignor

The kiss was still lingering on her lips, a fading warmth against the cold night air, when the voice sliced through the moment. "Kylie, what the hell are you doing here?" Kylie ripped herself away from Kelly, her heart leaping into her throat. She spun towards the sound, her breath catching. Bob was standing at the entrance to the bridge, not ten feet away. He was not just angry. He was vibrating with a fury that seemed to make the air around him ripple. His face was a mask of disbelief, his neck cords standing out like ropes, and his eyes looked ready to pop from their sockets. "Bob, you just swore," Kylie giggled, a nervous, high-pitched sound. She reflexively put a hand to her mouth, but the humor died instantly. She knew that sound. Bob only swore when he was absolutely, terrifyingly furious. "Is that the damn answer I am looking for?" he shouted. The sound echoed off the old ironwork of the bridge. "Do you know how many times I called you?" Kylie's gaze immediately dropped t

  • Disguise   Chapter 53-gold digger

•Third person's POV The afternoon sun was still high, beating down on the cracked pavement of the bustling street. A river of people flowed around Kelly and Kylie, a mix of after-school uniforms and adults heading home from work. Cars rumbled by, smelling of hot metal and exhaust fumes. And people stared. An older woman sitting on a bus stop bench smiled softly at their joined hands, a nostalgic look in her eyes. A man in a stiff suit, however, shot them a look of pure disapproval, his lips thinning as he passed. Kelly felt the stares like a familiar, uncomfortable itch, the way he always did. Usually, the attention was just for him, a low-grade static of awareness that he had learned to ignore. But this was different. This time, the stares were for the two of them, for the sight of his calloused, slightly larger hand holding Kylie's smaller, warmer one. He kept his eyes forward, focusing on the rhythmic tap of Kylie's sneakers on the sidewalk. She, on the other hand, seemed to b
