Chapter 2

Author: Triple Threat
"This person has stayed hidden deep in my heart for eight years."

Marsha said with deep feeling, "She's the daughter-in-law I always wanted."

The comment made my heart sink. I turned back to look at them, and I saw Winnie blush. In that moment, I could hear my heart stop beating for them.

I took out my phone to send a text to my superior at work: [I'd like to accept the offer for the company's overseas placement.}

My company approached me two weeks ago to offer me the position. Our overseas branch had kick-started a new project that needed someone to lead the team independently, and my company could not find the right person for the role.

Ultimately, the company's director talked to me about the position. "Nora, it has to be you. It'll take five years, and you'll be promoted two levels ahead. Your annual salary will be tripled too."

However, I rejected the offer because Micah had just started first grade, and Emery always said that women did not need to be too ambitious because someone needed to take care of the family.

I believed him then because I thought my family needed me, but tonight, they let me know that they never needed me. What they really needed was an obedient nanny.

My superior replied very quickly.

[Have you really thought things through? This job requires you to stay overseas for five years. Didn't your son just start first grade? Can you bear to leave him? What about your husband? Does he agree to it?]

My lips twitched as I replied: [I have no problem leaving them here. They can't wait to get rid of me.]

A few minutes later, a URL was shared with me for purchasing flight tickets. I would be flying three days later.

I stared at the text for 30 minutes until Emery called out my name from downstairs. "Nora! It's time to cut the cake!"

Micah kept muttering, "Hurry up downstairs, Mom! You shouldn't keep Ms. Linberg waiting."

I was silent. I did not want to go downstairs, but on second thought, maybe I needed a good reason to start a new life. I wanted to see how far they would go for another woman.

So, I headed downstairs.

Emery, Micah, and Marsha were already standing in a line in front of the dining table. When I walked to the table, Micah frowned. "You need to make way, Mom. Don't take Ms. Linberg's spot."

I clenched my fists and took a step back.

Marsha clicked her tongue. "You should read the room and stand on the other side."

She pulled Winnie over to her affectionately. "Stand in the center, Winnie. We should take a family picture."

Emery watched everything happen without putting a stop to it, and even Micah started ordering me around. "Didn't you hear what Grandma said, Mom? Take a picture for us, and make sure Ms. Winnie looks good."

If this were before, I would have started tearing up after being treated so heartlessly and begun questioning everyone about why they would do something like that to me. However, now, all I did was make sure that I remember everyone's faces today.

I took my phone out to point the camera at them.

Through the screen, I saw my son holding Emery's hand and Winnie's while smiling happily. Marsha held Winnie's other hand, smiling benevolently and acting like they were mother and daughter.

Watching this scene reminded me of last year when Emery and I had a wedding to make up for the one we did not have when we first got married. The last item on the itinerary was taking pictures, and Micah refused to hold my hand.

Emery carried Micah in his arms instead, and Marsha walked past me to stand next to Emery.

I was the one in the wedding dress, but I was also the one everyone distanced themselves from in the family wedding picture. I was just an unimportant character.

That night, I stood on the balcony and cried for a long time. I tried to comfort myself, saying it was just a picture and I should not overthink things as we were a family. It was only now that I realized that the word 'family' might mean different things to different people.

It was news from my lawyer. [The court's judgment is in effect. Your divorce has been finalized, and asset division will be conducted according to our demands. They will not be appealing.]I did not feel as happy as I thought when I saw the news. I was just relieved that it was over. Eight years of marriage had finally come to an end.Emery sent me a text: [Wishing you all the best in your future, Nora.]He sent another text after quite a while: [I'm sorry.]I looked at it for two seconds but did not reply. After that, I blocked his number.Micah would write letters to me occasionally. At first, he kept apologizing in his letters, with writing that looked like scribbles.[Mom, I packed my schoolbag today.][Mom, I never lose my temper for no reason anymore.][Mom, Grandma won't yell at anyone again.][Mom, Dad learned to make pizza, but it tastes horrible.]I read all of his letters, but I only replied if necessary.[Study hard.][Take care of your health.][Respect thos

I did not take the box.Micah kept crying as he said, "I was wrong, Mom. I shouldn't have called you old and ugly, and I shouldn't have said that I didn't want you. I shouldn't have stopped you from taking a picture with us. I promised I won't do anything like this anymore."His voice got smaller and smaller. "Can you come home? I'd like to eat the cake you make."The cake again. I was reminded of that night. I had been busy all day, and I burned my hand while taking the cake out of the oven, but they were only focused on making fun of me and made me take their family picture without me in it.I crouched to look Micah in the eye. "Micah, do you know why I was upset?"He nodded while sobbing. "Because I was not a good boy."I shook my head. "It wasn't because you were not a good boy. It was because you took my love for you for granted. You felt that I would always come home to bake you a cake no matter how much you hurt me."Micah was taken aback.I rubbed his head. It was the

"And you think I'm dumb too?"Winnie's tears fell. "I had too much to drink. It's not what I meant."That was when a man suddenly ran forward to grab Winnie's wrist. "Stop your acting, Winnie Linberg. Where is the 500,000 you owe me?"Another man started sneering, "That's how she is out of the country. She seduces men, cons people out of their money, and steals projects. She clings onto anyone useful to her."This caused a commotion at the party. Some people started taking videos and pictures with their phones, and others whispered amongst themselves. Emery looked increasingly upset, and Winnie screamed as she broke down. "Shut up! Everyone just shut up!"She turned to look at me viciously. "It's you! You did this to me, Nora Edwards!"I looked at her calmly. "Winnie, you can't hurt me anymore because I'm no longer part of the game you're playing."The police arrived very quickly, and Winnie was taken away for fraud, infringement, and malicious dissemination of commercial info

Mr. Colman's words woke me up.I wore a simple, black dress and did not put on any bulky accessories. When I walked into the party venue, I attracted the attention of many in attendance. Someone recognized me, and people started whispering among one another. "Isn't that Mr. Grant's wife?""I heard they are going through a divorce.""She looks so different from before."I entered the room stoically.Emery was standing next to the stage, and he froze when he saw me. His gaze followed me, and he wanted to come over, but did not dare to.Marsha was present as well. She looked even more haggard than the last time I saw her on the video call, and tears started brimming in her eyes the moment she spotted me. Micah was standing next to her in a little suit.He had lost a lot of weight, and he wanted to run to me when he saw me, but Emery pressed down on his shoulder to stop him. I nodded at them, treating them like they were the family of a client, and the look in Emery's eyes dim

I asked, "What did the doctor say, Micah?"He wailed and shouted, "Please come home, Mom. Ms. Linberg hit me and told me that she hated me. Grandma cried too, and Dad won't say anything. I'm scared."I looked at his face through the screen. It was small and pale, and his eyes were swollen like two little walnuts. This was the child who always made me worry, but his next words woke me up to reality."Please come home, Mom. Come home to cook for me and accompany me to sleep. I don't want Ms. Linberg as my mom anymore."Micah did not want a mother. He wanted someone to take care of him unconditionally. I replied softly, "I won't go home, Micah."He was taken aback as he looked back at me with tears all over his face. "Why? I just told you that I don't want Ms. Linberg anymore."I looked at him and said slowly, "Because I'm a person too. I can feel pain just like everybody else. I'm not someone you can push away when you don't want me, and still be waiting around for you."Micah cri

Sometimes, people had to see things with their own eyes to believe how horrible the truth could be. Trouble soon started brewing at the Grants. The first person to share the news with me was my neighbor. [Nora, there was a huge argument at your house. I heard that Winnie Linberg hit Micah.]I clenched my fists when I read her text.My neighbor followed up quickly with a voice note, and I could hear Micah howling in the background. Winnie's shrill voice was heard yelling, "Stop crying! Do you think I'm like Nora who runs circles around you? You're nothing but a spoiled child that's annoying!"Next, I heard Marsha's voice. "How could you beat a child, Winnie?"Winnie sniggered. "Why can't I? I'm not his mother. Besides, you were the ones who said Nora Edwards is old, ugly, and unpresentable. Didn't all of you find her embarrassing and come looking for me to take over as a mother? Why should I do it?"It felt like my heart was being squeezed to a pulp. It hurt so much, yet I also
