Chapter 3

作者: Triple Threat
Not everyone could be your family, just like how Emery, Micah, and Marsha never considered me part of the family, as proven last year and now. It would be just like how three days later, I, the one who was taking their picture, would no longer have anything to do with them.

"Done."

I put my phone down, and Micah was the first to jump over to me. "Let me see, let me see. If you don't make Ms. Linberg look good in this, I'll be mad at you, Mom."

Marsha looked doubtful. "That's quick. Did you take it properly?"

"Let me take a look." Emery checked the picture and raised an eyebrow. "Not bad. You've finally matured. You didn't go around losing your temper and getting jealous of everything."

Emery gave me a look of approval, but I looked away, worried that I would throw up.

"Now that we're done with the picture, let's make a wish," Winnie said softly and started ordering me around. "You're further from us, Nora. You should turn off the lights."

Marsha nodded. "Winnie's right. You should do it, Nora."

I turned off the lights, and the living room descended into darkness except for the weak candlelight on the cake.

Micah closed his eyes to make a wish. "My first wish is for Ms. Linberg to stay here forever and never leave."

Winnie started tearing up as her hands covered her mouth in surprise.

Emery rubbed Micah's head proudly. "You're a good boy, Micah."

"My second wish is for Mom not to be so annoying, and to stop making Dad mad."

The atmosphere turned tense the moment he made this wish. Winnie turned to look at me in concern right away, but there was a small smile on her lips.

Emery gave me a guilty glance and chided Micah, "Don't say things like that."

However, Micah became upset and said, "Why not? You said the same thing the last time we went to the movies with Ms. Linberg."

"Micah!" Marsha called out his name sternly, and Micah kept quiet.

I felt a pang in my heart.

Winnie did not just return to the country as Emery described. They had met earlier than I thought, and everyone but me knew about it.

My lips twitched. I wanted to laugh, but my hands were trembling. I asked Emery, "What else have you been hiding from me?"

Emery's lips pressed down tight as he looked away awkwardly. "Nothing. Just some other unimportant little things…"

"What little things?" I pressed for an answer.

Winnie spoke up, "Don't take this the wrong way, Nora…"

I cut her off, "I'm asking my husband a question, not you."

"That's enough, Nora!" Marsha exploded, and she started defending Winnie. "Winnie is a guest Emery had invited to your home. There's nothing between them, and you should stop looking at things with your dirty worldview."

Micah knocked into me like a little calf. "Bad Mommy! Don't you dare bully Ms. Linberg!"

I staggered from Micah crashing into me, and my back slammed into the corner of the dinner table. I inhaled sharply from the pain.

Emery reached out to help me, but Winnie tugged gently at his sleeve, and his hand paused in midair as if it had been nailed down. He did not move any further.

Marsha held Micah in her arms as she stared at me reproachfully. "When did you become such an unreasonable person, Nora?"

Micah glared at me like I was the enemy. "Ignore Mom, Grandma. Let's celebrate my birthday outside. I hate her."

My throat tightened as my fingernails dug into my palms, but I did not feel any pain. Marsha looked down at Micah to coax him.

"All right, all right. Let's ignore her. I'll take you out for cake."

She carried Micah in her arms and walked out the door while Winnie quickly followed behind.

It was news from my lawyer. [The court's judgment is in effect. Your divorce has been finalized, and asset division will be conducted according to our demands. They will not be appealing.]I did not feel as happy as I thought when I saw the news. I was just relieved that it was over. Eight years of marriage had finally come to an end.Emery sent me a text: [Wishing you all the best in your future, Nora.]He sent another text after quite a while: [I'm sorry.]I looked at it for two seconds but did not reply. After that, I blocked his number.Micah would write letters to me occasionally. At first, he kept apologizing in his letters, with writing that looked like scribbles.[Mom, I packed my schoolbag today.][Mom, I never lose my temper for no reason anymore.][Mom, Grandma won't yell at anyone again.][Mom, Dad learned to make pizza, but it tastes horrible.]I read all of his letters, but I only replied if necessary.[Study hard.][Take care of your health.][Respect thos

I did not take the box.Micah kept crying as he said, "I was wrong, Mom. I shouldn't have called you old and ugly, and I shouldn't have said that I didn't want you. I shouldn't have stopped you from taking a picture with us. I promised I won't do anything like this anymore."His voice got smaller and smaller. "Can you come home? I'd like to eat the cake you make."The cake again. I was reminded of that night. I had been busy all day, and I burned my hand while taking the cake out of the oven, but they were only focused on making fun of me and made me take their family picture without me in it.I crouched to look Micah in the eye. "Micah, do you know why I was upset?"He nodded while sobbing. "Because I was not a good boy."I shook my head. "It wasn't because you were not a good boy. It was because you took my love for you for granted. You felt that I would always come home to bake you a cake no matter how much you hurt me."Micah was taken aback.I rubbed his head. It was the

"And you think I'm dumb too?"Winnie's tears fell. "I had too much to drink. It's not what I meant."That was when a man suddenly ran forward to grab Winnie's wrist. "Stop your acting, Winnie Linberg. Where is the 500,000 you owe me?"Another man started sneering, "That's how she is out of the country. She seduces men, cons people out of their money, and steals projects. She clings onto anyone useful to her."This caused a commotion at the party. Some people started taking videos and pictures with their phones, and others whispered amongst themselves. Emery looked increasingly upset, and Winnie screamed as she broke down. "Shut up! Everyone just shut up!"She turned to look at me viciously. "It's you! You did this to me, Nora Edwards!"I looked at her calmly. "Winnie, you can't hurt me anymore because I'm no longer part of the game you're playing."The police arrived very quickly, and Winnie was taken away for fraud, infringement, and malicious dissemination of commercial info

Mr. Colman's words woke me up.I wore a simple, black dress and did not put on any bulky accessories. When I walked into the party venue, I attracted the attention of many in attendance. Someone recognized me, and people started whispering among one another. "Isn't that Mr. Grant's wife?""I heard they are going through a divorce.""She looks so different from before."I entered the room stoically.Emery was standing next to the stage, and he froze when he saw me. His gaze followed me, and he wanted to come over, but did not dare to.Marsha was present as well. She looked even more haggard than the last time I saw her on the video call, and tears started brimming in her eyes the moment she spotted me. Micah was standing next to her in a little suit.He had lost a lot of weight, and he wanted to run to me when he saw me, but Emery pressed down on his shoulder to stop him. I nodded at them, treating them like they were the family of a client, and the look in Emery's eyes dim

I asked, "What did the doctor say, Micah?"He wailed and shouted, "Please come home, Mom. Ms. Linberg hit me and told me that she hated me. Grandma cried too, and Dad won't say anything. I'm scared."I looked at his face through the screen. It was small and pale, and his eyes were swollen like two little walnuts. This was the child who always made me worry, but his next words woke me up to reality."Please come home, Mom. Come home to cook for me and accompany me to sleep. I don't want Ms. Linberg as my mom anymore."Micah did not want a mother. He wanted someone to take care of him unconditionally. I replied softly, "I won't go home, Micah."He was taken aback as he looked back at me with tears all over his face. "Why? I just told you that I don't want Ms. Linberg anymore."I looked at him and said slowly, "Because I'm a person too. I can feel pain just like everybody else. I'm not someone you can push away when you don't want me, and still be waiting around for you."Micah cri

  • Ditched My Family Because of a Game   Chapter 10

Sometimes, people had to see things with their own eyes to believe how horrible the truth could be. Trouble soon started brewing at the Grants. The first person to share the news with me was my neighbor. [Nora, there was a huge argument at your house. I heard that Winnie Linberg hit Micah.]I clenched my fists when I read her text.My neighbor followed up quickly with a voice note, and I could hear Micah howling in the background. Winnie's shrill voice was heard yelling, "Stop crying! Do you think I'm like Nora who runs circles around you? You're nothing but a spoiled child that's annoying!"Next, I heard Marsha's voice. "How could you beat a child, Winnie?"Winnie sniggered. "Why can't I? I'm not his mother. Besides, you were the ones who said Nora Edwards is old, ugly, and unpresentable. Didn't all of you find her embarrassing and come looking for me to take over as a mother? Why should I do it?"It felt like my heart was being squeezed to a pulp. It hurt so much, yet I also
