Chapter 100

Patrick Banks

~•~

“Patrick, just give them what they want.” Valerie pleaded, her voice dripping with fear. “Just tell them you’ll hand the company over to them!”

“He’ll have to sign the papers and everything. He can’t just say it and change his mind later.” The man moved closer to Valerie. “Just shoot him, so you can leave.” They had been trying to convince Valerie to pull the trigger.

Those men were crazy if they thought I was going to hand over my company to them. That was my family’s legacy and hell would freeze over before I would sign off ownership to them.

I couldn’t believe they even had the guts to ask me for my company. I offered to pay them any amount of money, but they wanted my company instead.

That wasn’t something I could do.

My gaze shifted to the gun. Did they really think before handing us guns to shoot each other? My hands tightened around the gun slowly. Instead of shooting Valerie — I could never do something like that — I thought about shooting t

Chapter 114Valerie Will~•~We spent three days in Colorado. Throughout the stay there, I tried to distract myself from reality, but I couldn’t stop thinking about my problems back in New York. Nevertheless, I made sure Liam had no clue about how I was feeling. Patrick and I always forced a smile during all the activities on the trip. Liam was having a good time and that was all that mattered. “I hate that we have to leave today,” Patrick said as he loaded the last bag into the trunk of the car. “Yes. We could have stayed a little bit longer.” Liam groaned as he chimed in on the conversation. “Why do I have school? I can’t wait for the holidays.” I let out a soft chuckle, ruffling his hair. “You’ve had so much fun already. It’ll last you enough until the end of school.” After talking for a while, we settled down in the car. As the driver drove off to the airport, my eyes were fixed on the road. As I admired the beautiful city, I turned to Patrick. “What if we don’t go back?”

Chapter 113Patrick Banks ~•~“Are you done packing your bags?” I yelled loud enough for Valerie to hear through the door. “You need to hurry up. I’ll go check on Liam.” “Okay, I’ll be done soon.” After she responded, I made my way over to Liam’s room. The nanny had already packed a bag for him. He smiled and pulled me into a tight hug as soon as he saw me. “I’m so excited to go on this trip.” He exclaimed. “Yes. Everyone is excited.” I replied as I lifted him. “I can’t wait to tell my friends in school about my experience.” I couldn’t help but laugh. Liam was finally making friends in his school and I was grateful for that. “I’m sure they’ll be happy to listen to you.” “Is Mama ready?” Liam asked, his big eyes looking at me with so much excitement. “Almost,” I said, brushing back a strand of his hair. “You know how long it takes for her to get ready.” Liam giggled and continued talking but I zoned out of the conversation. My mind wandered back to Benjamin. It had been three

Chapter 112Valerie Will~•~I didn’t have any words to explain how I was feeling. Everything inside me was tangled — grief, fear, and confusion. I just kept my fingers crossed, hoping that Benjamin was going to be okay. If something worse happened, we were going to be in big trouble. I paced around the hospital hallway as I waited impatiently for Patrick to come outside. I wanted him to come out and tell me that everything was okay. But when the door finally swung open, I didn’t like the look on his face. It meant that something was wrong. “What happened? Were you able to convince her that you had nothing to do with it?” I asked, folding my hands across my chest and staring at him in anticipation. “No. She wouldn’t believe me.” “Wow,” I muttered under my breath. Patrick and I made our way to the doctor’s office. He told them to do whatever they could to save his brother, and he was willing to pay whatever price. Soon enough, we were out of the hospital. As we settled down i

Chapter 111Patrick Banks ~•~“What are you doing here? Have you come to complete your job?” My mother snapped as soon as she saw me walk into Benjamin’s room. “Mom! Lower your voice. People can hear you.” I said, my voice barely audible. She turned to Valerie. “Why did you come with him?” She asked, her voice cracking slightly. “Just stay outside and wait for me,” I told Valerie when I saw how uncomfortable she was. After she left, I turned to my mother. “Can you calm down? I didn’t do anything to him.” She rolled her eyes. “Yeah, right.” She took a few steps closer to Benjamin and placed her hand around his body, as though she was checking his temperature. “What did the doctor say happened to him? What is going on?” I asked, my voice strained and uneven. She let out a deep exhale. “Why are you pretending like you don’t know what is happening?” She asked, glaring at me. “I don’t know what you two were fighting about, but there were other ways to resolve it instead of trying to

Chapter 110Patrick Banks ~•~“Patrick, did you do it?” Valerie’s voice echoed through the quiet room as she walked through the door. I sat upright on the bed. “What are you talking about?” I asked, my voice slightly groggy. Ever since I came back home, I have been sleeping. She closed the door behind her and stared at me. “You can’t hide anything from me. We are in this together.” She said as she took a few steps closer to me. “Did you do it?” I honestly had no idea what she was talking about. “Do what? What did I do?” My patience was wearing thin and I didn’t like the way she looked at me, like I had killed someone or something. She paused for a while, dragging a hand down her face. Her expression became soft as she sat on the edge of the bed. “Benjamin…he…he got into an accident. And the doctors aren’t sure that he’s going to make it.” Her voice was cracked with emotion. “What?” I gasped in shock, trying to process what I had just heard. “He what? Accident? How?” I asked, m

Chapter 109Valerie Will ~•~“But it feels like we are drifting apart from each other.” Celeste’s voice cracked slightly through the phone. “I honestly thought that things had gotten better between us.” I stared at the half-empty coffee on my desk, tracing my thumb around the rim. I couldn’t get any sleep the previous night because I was restless due to Benjamin’s threat. “We haven’t seen each other in forever.” She continued. “It feels like you’re shutting me out.” I let out a slow breath, rubbing my temple. “I’m sorry,” I murmured. Celeste was the least of my problems at the moment. I knew she was just speaking out of guilt, even if she had no idea that I knew about what she did. I could tell from her voice alone that guilt was eating her up. I knew I said I wasn’t going to confront her, but I couldn’t just act like everything was okay between us. Even though I tried to act normal, I ended up finding myself keeping my distance from her. We barely talked on the phone and I alw
