Chapter 2
Patrick Banks ~•~ As I sat down in my office, I couldn’t help but wonder how we got here. My eyes darted over to the picture frame that stood beside the computer on the table. Her blue eyes shone brightly in the photo. That was one of her features that had captivated me the first time I saw her on the television screen. I knew I needed her in my life. Valarie’s beauty still took my breath away, even in a photograph. I started reminiscing about the days we would laugh together as we attended different events. I remembered our love. I remembered the first time we met outside her dormitory. I remembered when everything was still perfect. I couldn’t help but wonder how everything went wrong. Valerie didn’t seem unhappy. I thought I gave her everything she wanted. But I guess I was wrong. Everything was great between us, but she went ahead to ruin it. Everything felt so surreal. I wouldn’t have believed if anyone had told me that Valerie would end up betraying me. Even though I felt insecure at times because of her line of work, I still trusted my wife. She assured me that she would never do anything to hurt me. But then, I realized that people lie. The worst part was that she was acting clueless about everything. She wanted to have a conversation with me badly, but I just couldn’t do it. I wasn’t ready to watch her lie to my face anymore. She had been doing it for a while, but I knew better now. Valerie had been sitting in the lobby for over an hour. A part of me felt guilty for making her waste her time. But she deserved it. After what she did, I shouldn’t even care about her feelings anymore. The receptionist had called me several times to remind me about my wife who was waiting for me downstairs. I gave her the same response every time. “I’ll let you know when I’m free, so you can send her up.” I didn’t want to see Valerie, and I hoped that ignoring her would just make her leave. But Valerie was determined to see me. She didn’t mind waiting. She had tried to talk to me several times at home, but I always brushed her off. I didn’t want to speak to her, but she was still persistent. I was trying to wrap my head around the whole situation and needed space to think. I barely went back home just to avoid her. As I sat down there, lost in my thoughts, my phone buzzed on the desk. I glanced at the screen, expecting it to be the receptionist again. But it was a text from Valerie instead. [ So you intentionally ignored me and made me waste my time in the lobby. We need to talk, we are married. You can’t ignore me forever.] I exhaled heavily as I read the text. Yes, I couldn’t ignore her forever, but I wasn’t ready to speak to her. Did she forget that she was married before she betrayed me? I leaned back on my chair, rubbing my temple. Everything about the whole situation was draining. I didn’t even want to think about it anymore. I needed a distraction. I picked up my phone and called my best friend, asking him to meet me at a bar. Fortunately enough, Jordan was free and ready to meet up with me. I still had a few more hours before my work for the day ended, but I couldn’t stay until then. I told my assistant to reschedule whatever I had left for the day. Soon enough, I was seated in my car. It dawned on me that I didn’t respond to Valerie’s text. I drafted a quick response and sent it before driving out of the office. After a short drive, I arrived at the bar where I asked Jordan to meet up with me. When I walked inside, I made my way to the counter where the bartender stood. Jordan hadn’t arrived, so I ordered a drink while I waited for him. “Give me a shot of tequila, please,” I instructed the bartender, who responded with a nod. “Patrick Banks.” I heard Jordan’s voice echo from behind me a few moments later. “Trouble in paradise?” He asked with a smirk as he sat on the empty stool beside me. A relieved breath escaped my lips as I saw Jordan. Jordan’s presence was like therapy to me. We had been best friends since we were little, and he always knew how to cheer me up. I nodded. “Yes, man, trouble in paradise.” Jordan chuckled. “Do you want to talk about it?” Without hesitation, I shook my head. “No, I don’t want to think about it.” I didn’t come all the way to the bar to talk about my problems. I just wanted to get drunk and escape my reality. But I knew Jordan wouldn’t let me get drunk in public. The last time something like that happened, it was a total disaster, and people on the internet didn’t stop talking about it for weeks. It even cost Valerie one of her roles in an upcoming movie. I knew what I had to do to make her forgive me. “Give us a shot of your strongest drink,” Jordan told the bartender when he placed the shot of tequila in front of me. I nodded in agreement. “Yes, we want the strongest drink.” My throat burned as I drank the tequila, but I didn’t care. It wasn’t as bad as the emotional pain I felt in my heart. I just wanted to numb the pain. Jordan brought up a conversation about random stuff to lighten up the mood, but I still couldn’t stop thinking about Valerie. “You know you have to talk about what is bothering you if you want to move past it?” Jordan narrowed his eyes at me when I asked for another drink. I waved my hands in the air dismissively. “Trust me, you don’t want to hear about it,” I responded with a chuckle. I honestly didn’t want to tell anyone about it until I was ready to speak to Valerie about it. “Okay, fine. I think we should head back to your house before you start acting funny.” Jordan stood up from the stool and gestured for me to join him. “I’m not drunk.” “I know you aren’t drunk, but you will be if we stay here any longer.” I stood up and followed Jordan to his car. My driver would pick up my car later because I wasn’t in the right state of mind to drive. As we drove into the city, my phone buzzed with a text message from Valerie’s sister. [ Have you done it yet?]Chapter 159Patrick Banks ~•~“Lisa?” I asked slowly as I answered the call. “Of course, it’s Lisa. Or did you call someone else earlier?” She responded in a sassy manner. I looked at Valerie, then I looked at the phone. I cleared my throat. “Why would you do that to me?” I asked, my tone clipped. It seemed like I was just going around throwing blames at everyone, but I had to confront them if I wanted to know the truth. Besides, Lisa was the last option. It had to be her. “Do what?” She asked, the annoyance palpable in her voice even through the phone. “What are you talking about?” My brows knitted into a frown. “Why did you leak information to the public about my company?” I replied, my voice sharper than I had intended. A humorless laugh escaped her lips. “I honestly have no idea what you’re talking about, Patrick.” I blinked. “Stop playing with me, Lisa.” She threatened that she was coming for me. And ever since then, I had been waiting for her to strike. It wasn’t lik
Chapter 158Patrick Banks ~•~I had to threaten the security guards before I could get into my mother’s compound. I was fuming with rage but I suppressed it. I wanted to have an amicable conversation with her, hoping she would fix all the damage she had caused — if she was actually the one behind it. Of course, I knew that working for the mafia wasn’t legal. But even though my mother found out about something like that, she had no right to take it public. That was very selfish and inhumane of her. As I stepped into the living room, I saw my sister, Madeline, sitting on the couch. She stood up immediately as she saw me, clearly shocked. “Who let you pass the gate? What are you doing here?” She asked, eyes raking over me from head to toe. “You shouldn’t be here, Patrick.” I couldn’t hold back a scoff. “I shouldn’t be here? Why?” I demanded, taking a few steps closer to her. Her breathing became labored. “Mom doesn’t want you in her house anymore.” Was that a sign of guilt? Why
Chapter 157Valerie Will ~•~“Is everything okay?” Alexis asked when she noticed the change in my demeanor. I rolled my eyes. “We’ve just been here for how long? But they’ve already taken a picture and circulated it online with trashy comments.” I replied through gritted teeth, frustration evident in my voice. Alexis took my phone from me and read the headlines aloud. “Valerie Will’s finally spotted outside a few weeks after her delivery. But we still don’t know who the father is — Patrick or Jamal.” Her lips pressed together, her eyes blazing with anger. “Those people are out of their minds. I’m so sorry, Valerie.” I let out a bitter scoff. “You don’t have to apologize. I was the one who asked to leave the house.” I said with a sigh. “Jamal isn’t even in my life anymore, why can’t they just move on?” Alexis’s expression softened. “You don’t have to listen to them. They’re just looking for something to talk about. Don’t let it get to you.” I always ignored the news about me, bu
Chapter 156Patrick Banks ~•~“Patrick! Have you seen the news?” Jordan’s worried voice came through the other end of the line. My lips parted and I blinked. “What news?” “The Times just broke a story about the company. And Patrick, it’s bad.” He hesitated, as though he was unsure of how to say it. “They’re launching a formal investigation into your company.” My heart skipped a beat. Formal investigation? On what? And why was it on the news? How did it get public without my knowledge? “What?” I asked, my voice tense. “What is it about?” Jordan let out a wistful sigh. “It’s about the dealings with the mafia.” A chill ran down my spine. “They know about the money laundering?” I asked, my voice barely above a whisper. “How? But I was so careful.” “I know, but someone leaked information about it. Things that the press couldn’t have dug up on their own. Private documents. Emails.” My jaw clenched. Who could have done something like that? I was careful enough. The only people
Chapter 155Valerie Will~•~I remember when I gave birth to Liam. I didn’t have anybody by my side — no friends, no family. I just did it alone. But this time around, I smiled as I saw Patrick, Liam, Alexis, Noah, and my mom in the hospital room. I still felt weak from the delivery, my body aching in places I didn’t even know could ache. Patrick sat at the edge of the bed, his hands never leaving mine. Liam and Noah spent the last hour hovering around the baby. “She’s so small,” Liam whispered. Noah nodded. “Yeah, she’s so tiny.” “That’s how you were when I gave birth to you,” I responded with a chuckle. Noah turned to Patrick. “Was I also like this?” Patrick nodded. “I guess you were even smaller.” It made everyone laugh. Alexis cleared her throat and looked at me. “Have you thought about a name yet?” She asked, her voice soft but curious. I only thought of a name recently. With everything that had been going on with me and Patrick, we didn’t really sit down to talk about
Chapter 154Patrick Banks ~•~Madeline and I used to be close. Very close. But ever since my mother cut me off from the family, everyone else turned against me too. I always wondered what she must’ve said to them. It was heartbreaking to know that they actually believed that I could kill my brother. I had tried so much to prove to them that it wasn’t me, but all my efforts were fruitless. My mother made it clear that she didn’t want anything to do with me anymore by giving me the permanent silent treatment. I had accepted my fate but a part of me still hoped that things were going to change. As for Madeline, I was shocked when the security called to tell me that she was at the gate. I was surprised to see her because we weren’t exactly speaking to each other at the moment. I knew she still blamed me for Benjamin’s death, but I couldn’t ask her to leave the shower. I thought she wanted to amend things. But I guess I was just being delusional. She wasn’t even in the house for l
