Chapter 34

Valerie Will

~•~

As we drove past the familiar road, my hands became clammy with sweat. I had no idea if she still stayed in that same apartment.

But I wanted to give it a shot.

The car finally pulled up at Celeste’s driveway.

I closed my eyes momentarily and let out a deep breath, bracing myself for whatever outcome I might see. Then I stepped out of the car and walked over to the front door.

I knocked gently on the door.

There was no answer.

I tried a few more times. Still the same.

Maybe she had changed locations or was at her office or something. I decided to leave and check her office instead.

But just as I was about to turn around, the doorknob twisted.

A relieved sigh escaped my lips.

The door swung open and I saw a strange man.

Wow. I thought it would be Celeste.

“I’m sorry. I thought the house belonged to my friend.” I apologized.

“It’s fine, I recognize you.” He replied as his gaze swept over me from head to toe.

My lips parted as I heard those word

Chapter 42 Patrick Banks ~•~“I can’t believe I trusted you. You just made me look like a fool. I could’ve seen right through you but I decided to give you the benefit of the doubt.” Valerie’s angry voice echoed through the other end of the line. “Calm down, Valerie,” I said, letting out a deep breath. “What are you talking about?” I asked, pretending like I didn’t know what she meant. I knew exactly what I was doing when I asked her out for lunch. I had a plan and it played out perfectly. There was no way Valerie thought I would give up on her so easily. It was even surprising to see that she believed me. I laughed whenever I remembered her words when I walked her to her car after lunch. ‘I guess I won’t be seeing you anymore. Thank you for lunch.’ Valerie was fuming with rage. “Oh, please.” She snapped. “Don’t act like you don't know what I’m talking about. You know exactly what you did.” Her anger was a confirmation that my plan worked. When we were having lunch, I sent th

Chapter 41Valerie Will~•~As soon as I sat down on the chair, Patrick raised a brow at me. “Why did you lie about your marital status?” He asked. I met his gaze without flinching. “I wanted you to leave me alone.” My cold response left him stunned.“Oh.” He muttered, a hint of disappointment in his voice. It was as if he didn’t expect me to be so honest. I didn’t say anything else. “How are you doing?” He tried to start up a conversation. “Fine,” I replied flatly without looking at him. I wasn’t there to reconnect. I just agreed to lunch so he would leave me alone for good. But a part of me felt it wouldn’t be that simple. He wouldn’t give up so easily. “How did your day go?” He asked, tracing his fingers around the empty wine glass. I looked at him. “Is this what you asked me out to do? Bore me with generic questions. My day was fine, but it would have been better if I wasn’t here.”“Ouch.” He chuckled lightly, shaking his head. “No. I just didn’t want to jump right into

Chapter 40Patrick Banks ~•~Valerie had no idea that Celeste was the one who gave me all the information I needed. She thought it was her mother and I saw it as a perfect opportunity to cover Celeste’s tracks. I didn’t confirm nor deny her assumptions. I knew she would eventually find out later, but that wasn’t my problem at the moment. I was happy that she finally agreed to go out with me. Of course, I didn’t want just one lunch with her. I just lied, so she would agree. I had other plans. There was no way on earth I would let Valerie go again. Even if she was with Jamal, I still wouldn’t give up. I intended to get her back together with her. And I wouldn’t rest until I did. After the call ended, I remembered that Celeste had one last thing to tell me. But first, I needed to get her back her license. I pulled out my phone and dialed a familiar number. “Judge Pennington,” I said once he answered. “It’s Patrick Banks.”There was a beat of silence. “Patrick, what can I do f

Chapter 39Valerie Will~•~As soon as my eyes fluttered open, my phone buzzed with a text. Rubbing my eyes with one hand, I reached out for my phone with the other hand. I gaped at the text from Patrick, blinking in disbelief. [ You lied to me, you’re not married. ] How did he find out about it? Did my mother tell him about it? I was so disappointed. I chose to trust her but she went ahead to spill it to Patrick in less than twenty-four hours. I wonder what else she must’ve told him. My blood was boiling with rage. What if she also told him about Liam? I wouldn’t be able to forgive her for that one. Letting out a deep sigh, I stood up from the bed and went into the bathroom. I wanted to wash my face. I needed a minute to think before calling my mother. With the way I was feeling, I knew I would be rude. And I didn’t want to be rude to her. I just wanted to know why she would talk to Patrick about it when she knew I didn’t want him to know anything about my life. A few minu

Chapter 38Patrick Banks~•~Celeste hated me. I was the reason she lost her law license. With just one phone call, I ruined everything she had built. I tore apart her career and reputation when I found out what she did to help Valerie. I gave her a chance to save herself when I asked her about Valerie’s whereabouts. But she refused to tell me. She was protecting her friend. At least that was what I thought. I didn’t do it because I was seeking justice, but because I was consumed by rage and bitterness. I wanted someone else to suffer the same way I was suffering. Celeste wasn’t the reason why my marriage crumbled. But I wanted to push the blame to someone and she turned out to be the perfect scapegoat. Looking back, I realized that what I did was cruel. But I was ready to help her get her license back if she was willing to help me. I needed all the information I could get about Valerie. Out of desperation, I went over to Celeste’s house. I told her my plans and she agreed to

Chapter 37Valerie Will~•~Surprisingly, lunch with Celeste wasn’t weird. There was a little bit of tension at first, but it disappeared quickly. Our conversations flowed effortlessly and it was just as if nothing had changed between us. We had a lot to catch up on, and one day wasn’t even enough. She told me about how life was after I left. She showed me pictures of her weddings and other milestones in her life. I still felt guilty that I didn’t get to attend her wedding. But she assured me that it didn’t matter. We had each other now. Celeste was surprised to hear that I was in a relationship with Jamal. I told her everything that happened from when I left New York to how my life turned out in Texas. I also told her about Liam and she couldn’t wait to meet him. We literally talked about everything and suddenly it felt like the old times again. But our reunion was cut short because she had to leave for an important meeting. After she left, I stayed back at the restaurant t
