Chapter 4

Penulis: Second Rain
“When are you getting home, Nate? I miss you.”

There was some noise in the background. It sounded like they were at an amusement park.

Even through the noise, I could hear Nate’s voice.

“I don’t want to see you, Mommy.”

My heart sank in an instant. I asked in disbelief, “What did you say, Nate?”

Nate’s voice was clear as his words shattered me. “I said I don’t want to see you!”

I could not help but clutch my phone tighter. I took a deep breath.

“I know you’re having a lot of fun right now. You can have your fun, but later, you should come and meet me, alright? I’ll always wait for you, no matter how long it takes.”

Nate did not hesitate, and his response was as cold and heartless as Terrence himself. “No! Daddy said you made him mad. You’re a bad mommy! I don’t want to see you anymore. Don’t come to find me anymore. I don’t like you, Mommy!”

The line went dead, and so did my heart.

It seemed that Nate was just like Terrence. He did not love me at all.

That was fine. I could finally leave without feeling like I had left something behind.

Back at the hotel, I reserved a plane ticket to my hometown.

Before I went to sleep, I looked through Terrence’s social media.

There was a photo of three people at the amusement park. The young woman, who had been at Colette’s wedding, was in the picture, as though she were already Nate’s mother.

Nate was leaning affectionately into Terrence’s embrace. He was sharing a Neapolitan ice cream with the other woman.

The caption read, [My son wants a new mommy.]

There were no likes on the post. From that, I understood that Terrence had posted it for my eyes alone. I was the only one who could see it.

Every time we argued, he would post something like this, and they were always about Nate.

He was warning me. He was telling me to give in for the good of my son.

Every time, I did as he wished. I would put aside my dignity and allow him to debase me.

Thinking about how I had risked my life to give birth to Nate, I realized that was when Terrence had truly gotten his claws into me.

Unfortunately for him, I would not fall for that trick again.

I hit like on the post before putting my phone down to go to sleep.

In the middle of the night, I was woken by Terrence’s phone call.

“What kind of mother are you, Kendra? Do you know how long Nate was waiting for you? He’s still crying!”

I rubbed my eyes and said sleepily, “Oh? Please apologize to him on my behalf.”

Terrence was quiet for two seconds before he let out a laugh. “Do you think I won’t stop you from seeing Nate again, Kendra?”

I could hear the threat in his voice.

But I was no longer the same woman. I was no longer the woman who gave in every time because of her son.

“Oh, I know you definitely will,” I said softly as I looked at the ceiling.

Terrence swallowed. He asked in disbelief, “What did you say?”

I sat up. My hair rustled over the hotel’s sheets.

“You’re Nate’s father. You can do anything you want.”

Through the line, I could hear the sound of ceramic breaking.

“This is your last chance, Kendra. Take your words back. If you don’t, I’ll take Nate overseas tomorrow. Don’t even think about seeing him again.”

I put the phone on speaker and navigated to my gallery.

There were 213 videos and more than 1,000 pictures.

I had looked at them countless times before.

I took a deep breath and deleted everything. Suddenly, I could not wait for tomorrow to come.

“We were never married. Is that correct, Terrence?”

On the other end of the line, Terrence went quiet.

I looked down and continued indifferently, “Since we were never married, there’s no need to get a divorce. Let’s break up.”

I hung up.

The next second, there was a loud knock at my door.

Terrence looked less angry at that. The apartment was a small one, and with all the books I had packed in, it felt even more cramped.Looking displeased, Terrence took a seat on the small couch. Perhaps he realized he had never humbled himself like this in his thirty-plus years. He picked up one of the books and froze. “And here I thought you’d lost interest in all this a long time ago.”I took out a bottle of milk from the fridge, heated it, and handed it to Nate. “Alright, I’ve seen Nate. If there’s nothing else, you can take him home.”Nate clutched the bottle, looking at Terrence, unsure what to do. Terrence held him in his lap and said softly, “Can’t we go back to how things were, Kendra?”“And how were things back then?” I asked lazily as I leaned into the couch. “Do you want me to keep being your fake Mrs. Fulton? Forget it. I’m tired of all that.”Nate seemed to understand a little about what we were talking about. “Mommy, I was wrong. Please come home with Da

“Aren’t you done with your tantrum yet, Kendra? Just tell me what you’re unhappy about, and I’ll change it. Isn’t that enough?”This was the first time Terrence had admitted defeat, and Jared was shocked by it. His eyes widened. I was unaffected. I moved aside to let him pass as I prepared to leave. But Terrence grabbed my hand. “Come home with me, Kendra.”Before I could respond, someone stepped in from behind me and blocked Terrence.“Excuse me, sir. Please watch what you’re doing.”David stood there with his coat draped over his arm with a calm face.“Who are you?”Terrence’s eyes blazed with fury, and he seemed ready to start a fight. I sighed and stepped in front of David, shielding him behind me.“Enough!”That single word seemed to freeze the moment.Terrence halted and stared at me in disbelief.“You’re on his side, Kendra? Who’s he?”I met Terrence’s bloodshot eyes. “Does it matter? We’re not together anymore, Terrence.”Terrence opened his mouth as if

“I remember when Kendra first joined our research team. She didn’t know anything back then. She kept following you guys around and asked questions about almost everything.“Back then, I thought that this young lady would definitely make something great of herself in the future.”Prof. Prentice did not continue after that. I lowered my head and quietly sipped some beer. After the meet-up was over, I did not leave in a hurry. After most people had left, I pulled my old notebook from my bag.“Prof. Prentice, I would like to start learning again.”Prof. Prentice was shocked by this. He took my notebook and looked through it. “I was right about you, Kendra. After looking through your notebook, I can see that you have a lot of foresight. Let me think it over tonight, and I’ll recommend you to some research facilities. You can attend some interviews there and see what happens.”David suddenly interrupted him. “Can I take a look?”This was the first time David had spoken to me all

I was stunned for a moment as I recalled that coldly rational man. I was an orphan who had grown up in an orphanage. As such, I had been eager to do well in all things from a young age. To become more independent, I threw myself into my studies and successfully won a place in Daleport’s best university andand enrolled in the university’s top major. In my second year, I successfully joined a research team with my advisor, even though it was just to do odd jobs on the team. David Westley was the main player on that team. I also used to have a crush on him. Unfortunately, when I was in my third year at university, he went overseas for his studies. Things ended between us before I could even confess my feelings to him.Since I had not answered, my advisor, Prof. Prentice, continued speaking. “I always had such hopes for you and David back then. You two were my very best students. It’s such a shame that you got married right after graduating.”At this point, Prof. Prentice’

Two years ago, I was finally allowed to see Nate for the first time. I still remembered how it had rained endlessly in Daleport back then. The entire city was drenched.Yet, on the day I went to see Nate, the sun came out. The sky had been blue, with a pleasant breeze in the air. The weather reflected my mood perfectly. I had been so unspeakably happy. I had gone to Fulton Manor early in the morning and waited three whole hours before someone came to open the door. When the butler saw me, he was very displeased. Even so, I did not care. At that time, all I cared about was seeing Nate. In the main hall, I waited for another long stretch of time. It was only when the clock struck twelve that Georgia came out with three-year-old Nate. Seeing his chubby face, I felt tears prickle in my eyes immediately. This was my son, for whom I had endured endless humiliation just so he would be safe. This was my son, who had been ripped away from me right after birth. When Georgia

“Open the door, Kendra Mercer!”Terrence’s aggressive voice rang out beyond the door, and I jolted from the shock. “How dare you break up with me, Kendra? Open this door!”I sighed. I was in no rush to open that door. Instead, I went and changed into some comfortable and warm clothes. When I opened the door, I found Terrence was not even wearing a coat. It was March in Daleport, and there was still a biting chill in the air. However, it seemed as though Terrence could not feel it at all. “Come in, then.”I stepped aside to let him enter. Then, I calmly sat on the couch. After many years, I had gotten used to withstanding whatever Terrence threw at me, whether it was affection or humiliation. Terrence did not sit. With the way the light was in the room, his huge shadow enveloped me like a shroud. “How dare you try to divorce me, Kendra?”Terrence’s eyes burned holes through me. Rage burned in them like flames. But I looked at him in confusion. “This isn’t the firs
