(Dahlia)
THE WOLF brings me to his sprawling mansion. The servants are shocked when they see us. When he snarls at them, they all lower their heads. The only time I’ve been here was when Brent summoned me for the first time with my brother and gave us the order.
His wolf runs near the pool area and leaps to the balcony. The glass door is open, and he walks inside. He lowers his body, allowing me to slide down. And then he shifts. But the panic and tension I feel is brief after seeing that his eyes are still gold and not blue.
As soon as he’s back to being human, he reaches for me in his naked glory. Something predatory flashes across his features. I watch him the way he watches me. With need and admiration.
We haven’t been this close since I manifested as an omega when I turned eighteen. He’s always treated me like a little sister but starts avoiding me that day. In the past, he used to smile at me and exchanged even a few words with me.
This reminds me why I fell in love with him. Setting his magnificent looks aside, he’s brilliant, has a big heart for many people, an excellent alpha, and a skilled fighter. He started as a soldier. He’s the youngest alpha to be promoted as a general and he excels at it. He’s a good guy. He’s just not into me. When he found out my feelings for him before the annual mating ceremony, he started putting distance between us.
And now, he doesn’t only treat me as a stranger but as an enemy who is ruining his chances with his beta. I’m aware that he doesn’t want a mate but after our bond is confirmed and everybody finds out, especially the king, he has to fulfill his pack responsibilities.
That’s why he married me.
Brent impatiently grabs my waist and leans down. He claims my lips. His kisses are pure fire. Pure obsession. Things happen so fast. He destroys my wedding gown with his bare hands as if the sight of me still in it bothers him. He only stops growling when he sees me as naked as him. Hunger flickers in his eyes as he pushes me to the king-sized bed. Skin to skin, with no barrier between us, we hold each other. We kiss the way our beasts have always craved to do.
Brent’s mouth devours me hungrily. There is no part of my body that he doesn’t touch and kiss as if he’s making up for all the times the human side of him has hurt me. I surrender to him, to the beast, and to our thrumming bond.
“Here,” he rasps as our bodies become one. An animalistic growl rips out of his mouth. His eyes glisten. “Is where I belong.”
Knowing that I’m not the only one who feels it this time makes my eyes water. I cup his cheeks. “That’s right. This is where we belong, my love.”
Brent claims me again and again. It’s the happiest night in my life that I don’t even want to fall asleep. It’s terrifying to sleep knowing that we only have this night, knowing that I’ll be greeted by a different reality when I wake up the next day.
But exhaustion is a hard thing to fight. The last thing I remember is him calling me his mate before I close my eyes.
I wake up with a tug in my heart. The sun is shining. And Brent is no longer by my side. I don’t have to guess where he is. I hear giggles. I wrap the blanket around my body and glance through the windows. There he is.
My husband… with his woman. They are in the pool area. I can only see his back and Rosie on his lap. She’s facing the direction towards the master bedroom. As if sensing me, she looks up and pulls his face down her throat and giggles again as he playfully bites her there… using the same hands and mouth that were all over me just last night.
Rosie smiles so beautifully and links with me, “You had your husband last night. I hoped you enjoyed it, dear. Because it was your first and last night with my man, with my alpha.”
(Claude)“Please forgive me,” Fleur pleads with tears in her eyes. “All I wanted was to live here permanently with the man I love. Lady Rosie guaranteed it would happen if I agreed to make the tonic for her. I k-knew it was wrong but I was desperate-“Before the mage could finish her sentence, the Vampire Queen silences the entire hall when she vanishes from her seat. In a blink of an eye, she is right there at the center, holding the mage’s heart in her hand. Blood pours down her fingers as she glances at each one of us.“A life for a life,” Miranda speaks coldly, dangerously. “Did you know about the tonic, your majesty?”“No, your grace,” I answer truthfully before staring at my best friend. “Did you?”Astor does not have to answer. It’s in his eyes. In his reaction. He has never looked this sick before. Like me, Miranda could tell without hearing his response.“What do you suggest we do about this, your majesty?” she asks as she crushes Fleur’s heart and drops it on the carpet. Her
(Dahlia)The people are silenced by the moon. Surprised gasps follow as they look up. The first and last time it turns this red and fiery was when the Moon Goddess descended to give protection to her children against all the other vile creatures. That was the time she granted the ancestors the power to shift and protect themselves. But the Moon Goddess does not make an appearance tonight.Until the bitter end, she abandons me.Then again, I’ve never been her favorite child. The soldiers pause but only for a while. They steal the crowd’s attention by grabbing me by the hair so painfully that I would have screamed if I still had an ounce of energy left in me.“Take a look, ladies and gentlemen! Even the Moon Goddess is with us tonight as we gather to punish the monster who betrayed the General, who harmed our beloved Lady Rosie, and killed our faithful soldiers!” The soldiers raise their swords. “To justice!”“To justice!” they roar like they are the victims.“To peace!”“For our Genera
(Dahlia)“Come on. Don’t be sad. You will be reunited with your daddy dearest soon enough. Don’t forget to give him our regards.”My feet automatically stop moving as I whirl towards the soldier. I know him. He’s Pete, one of Rosie’s trusted men. My heart batters out of my ribs. I’d like to believe I just misheard him. That can’t be true. “What did you just say?”Pete feigns surprise. “You mean you haven't heard about it yet? Oops. My bad. How would you know anyway? You were stuck in your cell.” Again, laughter follows. “Your father dearest died. He knelt outside De Luca’s residence for days, begging them to release you.”“What did you sick bastards do to my father?!”When my eyes turn red and my wolf threatens to resurface, he looks defensive. “What? Your old man should have anticipated it. What you did to Rosie was unforgivable, you whore! Seeing him pissed off Lord Astor. I’m sure he didn’t mean to kill your daddy when he let out his wolf. He was just too weak. Weakness must have r
(Dahlia)The footsteps are getting closer. The time has come. The soldiers are here to pick me up. When the sun sets today, I will be punished in front of hundreds of people at the town plaza to set an example to the public. That no one messes with the royals and lives through it.For days, I waited for Craig and dad to appear. I wanted to see them for the last time at least. They didn’t come. And maybe it’s for the best. Seeing me will only bring more pain to them, especially to dad who is still recovering.I hope they don’t come to the plaza. I don’t want my death to be their final memory of me. I look outside the tiny window, the only light in my dark cell.“It’s another gloomy day,” I whisper. “It’s raining again.”“It’s not,” a tired female voice beside my cell responds for the first time. She’s been there longer than me but didn’t try speaking to me until today. “There is no rain, Dahlia.”“Then what do you call that?”“Your tears. You’ve been crying since the day you heard about
(Claude)“I want that wicked woman to suffer ten times the pain she had caused to my daughter, your majesty. Rosie will have to forever hide her face and body all because of one stupid omega! I don’t give a damn what kind of creature she is. Dahlia must die!” Astor screeches as I stare at my nephew through the cameras in his room.It has been five days, and Brent is still in his wolf form. It’s the longest time he has been in this form. No matter how much it pained me, I was the one who ordered the soldiers to pin him down and send him to the facility for rabid alphas. It took countless elite soldiers to be able to subdue him. It would not even be possible without the help of the enchanted tranquilizer that we obtained from the mages.Brent’s wolf wanted to chase Dahlia. His beast has taken over and can neither be controlled nor commanded. Even by me. At this very moment, I know that the reason why he has been viciously trying to smash the walls to be free is because of his former mate
(Dahlia)I COLLAPSE on the ground. But so does Brent.Disbelief and something else crosses his eyes. Finally, he is looking at no one else but me. I have his full attention now. This time, I don’t have to beg for it.As blood trickles down my mouth, he looks at me like he has seen a ghost. His gaze widens as he clutches his chest and his wolf calls out to mine, but my wolf does not respond to him anymore. He pales as the realization sinks in.As the soldiers surround me and bind my wrists with the handcuff, I see something new in the General’s eyes for the first time.Fear.Agony.And then he shifts, his wolf bleeds as he unleashes a howl that sounds like madness and rage. It’s the agony of a severed bond. As I stand in the wreckage, I feel nothing at all. Or maybe I am just… drained. Tired. Empty inside. If this happens before, like a fool, I know I would have ran to him. I would have exhausted myself trying to calm him. But I’m done breaking just so he can be whole. I’m done hurting
