Chapter 9

Author: Triple Threat
Julian's voice was hoarse as he asked, "Are you happy now?"

I looked at him and felt sorry for him.

He'd come to find me, and the first thing he asked wasn't whether he could apologize. It was whether I was satisfied.

I said, "No."

He froze.

I kept my voice even as I said, "You lost the promotion because of your own actions, not because of me."

His face darkened. "If you hadn't said it in front of everyone last night—"

"If you hadn't taken Fiona," I cut him off.

He went quiet, and I kept

People asked me, "Nina, where'd you learn to cook like this?"I smiled and said, "My mom taught me."Others asked, "Why did you come back alone?"I smiled at that too and replied, "To live my own life."The days passed slowly, but steadily.I got to know people again. The woman next door saved me a warm bowl of breakfast every day. The cobbler at the corner always said I didn't skimp on the food. Old classmates would bring their kids in to eat and laugh, saying I'd finally decided to come home.I used to think that divorce was something to be ashamed of.Later, I realized that the real shame was staying unhappy and convincing yourself you could endure it.Winter came fast. The cold here wasn't as harsh as Capin's, but the chill still seeped into my bones. One evening, as I was closing the diner, I saw Julian at the end of the street. He was wearing a black coat, damp from the rain, and looked far too thin. When he saw me, he didn't come closer at first. He only watched me fr

A month later, I returned to Capin to finalize the divorce.Julian arrived two hours early. When I got there, he was standing at the courthouse entrance with a bouquet of red roses. They were flashy, a little cheap, and the kind I used to love. He'd rarely bought them. "Flowers aren't practical", he used to say. "Household things are better."Now he'd finally bought them, but I didn't need them anymore. When he saw me, his eyes lit up. "Nina."I nodded. "Let's go in," I said.He stood there with the roses. "Can we talk first?""No," I said quickly. His throat tightened."Just ten minutes of your time. I've already fired Fiona. I didn't transfer her out. I fired her. She told people about us and sent the chat logs to coworkers. Mr. Cole was furious."I lost the promotion for good. Someone else took the project. I know I deserved it."He smiled weakly. "I have nothing left."I looked at him and said, "You still have a job and an apartment. You still have yourself, too. So don

Soup spilled on the ground, its rising steam instantly torn away by the cold wind.Julian's voice shook as he said, "Nina, you can't do this. Capin is our home."I shook my head."That was your home, not mine. I lived here for seven years and still felt like a guest. There wasn't spice in the kitchen, and none of my things were in the living room."Even the smoked ham my mom sent me, I had to eat in secret when you were out. Julian, I stopped having a home a long time ago."Tears ran down his face again."Then I'll change. Come back, and we'll fill our house with whatever you want. I'll fill the kitchen with spice. I'll plant the flowers you like on the balcony. "I'll go home with you and see your mom, too. I'll listen to whatever you say from now on."I looked at him and saw myself from seven years ago.Back then, I'd been the same. Offering up my heart with trembling hands, I used to tell him softly, "Julian, I can learn. I can change. I just want us to have a good life."

I didn't want to hear any more, so I turned and walked away. When Julian saw that I was leaving, he shook Fiona off and came after me. He begged, "Nina, don't go."He caught my sleeve. "I know I was wrong. I'll cut her off for good. I'll have her leave the company. Just give me one more chance."I looked down at his hand."You said the same thing before last night. You said if I went to the banquet, you'd clear things up with her. But Julian, what you cleared up wasn't the relationship. It was the blame."His hand loosened.I looked at him."The person you love has always been yourself. Nothing mattered more to you than your future, your pride, your image, and the excitement you felt with someone new. All of that mattered more than I did. You only thought of me after you lost them."Tears ran down his face. It was the first time I'd seen him cry like this."That's not true. Nina, I love you. I really love you.""But I don't love you anymore," I said quietly. The words landed

Instead, you brought your assistant there as a date, and me as your prop. Last night only happened because of what you did."My words pinned him in place. He looked down. It was a long time before he spoke."Fiona lied to me."I frowned. He clung to that excuse as though it could save him."She told me you didn't care about these things. She said that sometimes, a woman threatens divorce just to be chased. She also said taking her t

Back then, I thought that this man would protect me for the rest of my life.Later, Julian saved his most dazzling side for everyone else. For me, he only had impatience. His boss, Jonathan Cole, walked over then. He seemed to be in a good mood."Nina, you made it. Julian said you'd come today. You two have always had a good marriage. That's rare," he said.I glanced at Julian. He was practically pleading with his eyes, as if one nod from me would get him that last step to the vice president role. He'd waited years for it.I'd waited with him. When he worked late, I brought him dinner. When work dinners wrecked his stomach, I got up at midnight to make him soup. When he prepped for the promotion, I sat with him until 3:00 am. When he forgot his files, I took them to the office in heavy snow.Back then, I quietly supported him in his career. But he never saw it.Now he needed me to step forward and play the role of a proper wife again.I felt sick—not the kind of sickness he
