Chapter 3

Author: Zac Neal
"Chloe, how could you say that? Yale and I have been married for five years without a child. That's my fault. Now that Ms. Leeds is pregnant and carrying on the Gibson family line, it's a true blessing for everyone," I said calmly.

My words stunned everyone in the room.

The faint smile on Yale's face vanished instantly, and he instinctively loosened his arm around Willow's waist.

Even Chloe stared at me in disbelief. "Have you lost your mind?"

She had expected me to make a scene and eventually get thrown out of the house.

Keeping a warm smile on my face, I set down the gift I had brought. Then, I turned to Willow and said, "Ms. Leeds, this is a little something for you. I hope you like it."

In the past, Yale hated it whenever I got jealous and made a fuss. But now, my heart was full of genuine blessings for Willow's pregnancy. I was the dignified, graceful wife he'd always wanted me to be. Surely, he had to be thrilled.

I ran my fingers over the divorce papers tucked inside my bag. Hopefully, when Yale was in a better mood, he would sign the papers without a fuss. After all, I didn't want things to turn as ugly as they had last time.

To my surprise, Yale's scowl only deepened. He glared at me for a few long seconds, his voice heavy with suppressed rage. "Go find a seat! You're keeping the whole family waiting. Don't you have any manners?"

I nodded submissively without defending myself and quietly walked over to an empty seat in the far corner of the living room.

A wave of confusion washed over me. Why was Yale still unhappy?

Not that it mattered. If he was in a bad mood today, I could just get him to sign them another day. I wasn't in any rush anyway.

Yale spent the entire evening close to Willow, while I watched him dote on her with tenderness from the other end of the dining table.

The truth was, Yale used to be just as sweet to me.

When my period cramps were at their worst, he'd hold me tight, sniffling as he warmed my lower abdomen. He'd brave the freezing wind and snow for two hours just to bring me the food I craved.

He had even lit up the whole city with fireworks and proposed to me under a night sky that burned bright as day.

That was why the past five years without him had felt so unbearably painful.

Without the title of Mrs. Gibson, I had nothing.

To make a living, I washed dishes at a restaurant until my hands pruned white from detergent. I also worked odd jobs at construction sites, where the scorching sun left my skin peeling. At my lowest point, I couldn't even afford a warm meal and could only survive on stale bread.

When Yale finally tracked me down, I was working as a waitress at a small diner. A drunk customer was pointing a finger in my face, hurling insults at me, and trying to force me to drink.

Yale stood at the entrance in his tailored suit, completely out of place amid the chaos. He looked at me with a complicated look in his eyes. Instead of blaming me, he asked if I was willing to remarry him.

I agreed without a second thought, not because I still loved him, but because I was terrified of going back to that life—one where I was poor, desperate, and at everyone's mercy.

To repay him for giving me a better life, I tried my best to be the perfect wife he wanted—sweet-tempered, understanding, and never jealous.

But even after dinner, I still couldn't find the right time to hand him the divorce papers.

Disappointed, I stood by the entrance waiting for Yale so we could head home together, only to learn that he and Willow were staying the night.

"You should go home," Yale said.

His fringe obscured his eyes, so I couldn't read his expression. I simply nodded and turned around to leave.

Just as I stepped outside, his voice called out from behind me. "Sarah?"

I turned around and looked at him in confusion.

Yale opened his mouth, then thought better of it. He rubbed his brow, looking troubled. After a long pause, he finally said, "Forget it. Just text me when you get home."

I remained silent as a quiet sense of pity washed over me.Everything Willow had schemed so hard to get had ultimately slipped through her fingers."I finally understand now why you were so determined to leave me back then," Yale said, his eyes filled with guilt and regret. "I was a fool. I was too blind to see that the most precious person was right beside me.""It's all in the past," I said calmly. "There's no point in bringing it up now.""I know." Yale nodded, his voice heavy with a lingering sadness."I didn't come here to intrude on your life. I just want to tell you that I've cut ties with the Gibson family. I gave up my inheritance and all my assets. All I want is to live an ordinary life."I looked at him in surprise. "Why would you do that?""Because I want to start over," Yale said with determination in his eyes. "I want to make up for the mistakes I've made and do something meaningful with my life."He paused briefly before continuing, "I've opened a charity school

Yale looked at me, his eyes filled with helplessness. He asked, "Do you really hate this family and me that much?""It's not hate. I just don't love you anymore, and I'm tired of all this," I said calmly. "Yale, there's no future for us. Just sign the papers. Let me go, and let yourself go, too."Yale was silent for a long time before finally speaking. "If I sign the papers, will you agree to one condition?""Name it," I said, looking straight at him."Please don't cut me out of your life after the divorce," Yale pleaded. "I know I've wronged you in the past, and I don't expect you to forgive me. But I want to know how you're doing. I want to be there for you whenever you need help."Looking at him, I found my resolve beginning to waver. My original plan was to cut all ties with him after the divorce and start a new life. But seeing the desperation in his eyes, I didn't have the heart to say no. After all, we had once been husband and wife. Things had ended bitterly between us,

I didn't lose my temper. I just looked at Chloe calmly and said, "Chloe, watch your words. Yale and I aren't divorced yet. I'm still his lawful wife and a part of the Gibson family.""His lawful wife?" Willow let out a soft, mocking laugh as she gently stroked her belly. "Ms. Moore, stop fooling yourself. Yale loves me. You're nothing but an unwanted third wheel. If you know what's good for you, you'll pack up and leave before you embarrass yourself even more."I found Willow's smugness amusing. Yale treated her well only because she was carrying his baby, and her family was useful to the Gibsons. Once she lost those advantages, her fate would probably be worse than mine."Whether I leave or stay isn't up to you or Chloe. Yale makes the call," I replied calmly. "Besides, I've already asked Yale for a divorce. I'm just waiting for him to sign the papers."Chloe and Willow both went pale. Willow clearly hadn't expected me to be the one asking for a divorce. Chloe was stunned, too.

"Must you really be this heartless?" Yale asked softly, a hint of pleading in his voice."I learned it from you," I said coldly. "I'm just taking back what belongs to me."With that, I turned away from Yale and continued packing. He stood in place, watching me in silence. His eyes brimmed with pain, guilt, and reluctance. After a long silence, he finally spoke. "I won't sign them."I paused in my packing and looked up at him. "What do you mean?""I'm not getting a divorce." Yale looked at me with unwavering determination. "Sarah, as long as I don't agree, you'll always remain my wife. You can forget about ever leaving me."I frowned, a wave of irritation rising within me."Yale, don't push me," I said coldly. "If you refuse to sign, I'll have no choice but to take this to court. If things get ugly, it won't just damage your family's reputation. It could also hurt Willow's reputation. I don't think that's what you want."Yale's expression shifted. Clearly, I had hit a nerve.

Yale's expression was complicated, drawn with exhaustion and weariness. Strands of hair fell messily across his forehead and obscured his eyes."Are you really leaving?" he asked softly, a faint plea in his voice."Yes." I nodded and continued packing without looking at him.Yale walked over and glanced at the clothes in my hand. Suddenly, he grabbed my wrist and threw the clothes onto the floor."Stop packing!" he growled. "Sarah, I'm not letting you go!"I frowned and tried to pull my hand free, but his grip only tightened."Yale, stop this," I warned softly. "There's no going back for us.""No going back?" Yale let out a cold laugh, though his eyes burned with deep agony. "Back then, you begged me to remarry you. And now, you're the one asking for a divorce. What do you take me for? A tool you can summon and dismiss whenever you please?"I looked at him and felt a surge of cold irony."Yale, you've never truly loved me," I whispered with a sad shake of my head. "You're just

Men were all the same. They only realized what they'd lost once it was gone and took the ones who loved them for granted."Because I don't love you anymore," I said calmly, as if I were stating the simplest fact in the world. "The five years after our divorce taught me a lot about life. Love is far too fleeting and intangible. It doesn't compare to a warm meal and a place to call home."I paused, looking into the shock in his eyes before continuing, "Back when I loved you, every little thing you did stirred my emotions. Your betrayal could shatter me completely."I took a quiet breath, my voice flat. "But now, I don't love you anymore. Who you're with and who you choose to care about has nothing to do with me. I just want to live my own life and spend the rest of my days in peace."The moment those words left my mouth, Yale's face turned deathly pale. His lips trembled slightly, but he couldn't utter a single word.Ignoring him, I turned and walked into the bathroom. I used a towe
