We’re at the park.

The opened space is filled with people — children running around, adults talking, others on a walk.

I’d brought us here with the intention of distracting the stranger from earlier, knowing it would feel safe here since it’s too open for anyone to even make an attack.

However, it doesn’t.

If anything, there’s just this nagging feeling at the back of my mind that something terrible is going to happen soon, and even the dread in my stomach isn’t letting up.

I pray nothin

Elara is watching me carefully now. Her eyes are so cautious, and I can tell she’s holding her breath, like she’s waiting for me to explode. However, I don’t. It’s not because I don’t want to, though. But rather, because I don’t think shouting would make this hurt any less. It won’t take away the pain, and neither would it take away the hurt. If anything, I would even regret shouting later, and that will add to the hurt. Right now, though, I just need to know the details no matter how much it would destroy me, just so I can know where I even stand in this woman’s life. So, I ask. “When?”She blinks, genuinely confused. “What?""When did he say it?""Right before I left,” she says. "So..." I nod once. “You got into the car." When she nods this time, I continue. “You drove home.”Her voice is breathless, tension sitting on her face as she responds, “yes.”"You walked through that door."She looks away and rolls her lips in her mouth. “Yes.""You looked me in the eye." My voice is

I drop my hand back beside me. “What happened, Elara?”She looks up and blinks. “What?""At the café,” I say. “What happened there?”"I already—""No,” I cut her off gently. “You've told me almost nothing."She lowers her head again, and I continue."I know you met him,” I say. “know you lied about it, and I know that he asked to see Theo." After a pause, I continue. “What I don't know is everything in between."Elara drops her hands and rubs her palms nervously, looking up to meet my gaze. Then, she begins to talk. "He asked if we could talk.""So you agreed,” I say. A small nod from her. “I wasn't going to at first."“Right,” I say. “But you eventually did.”“Yes.”I lift a brow. “Why?”"I thought..." She exhales shakily. “I thought maybe he wanted to apologise.""And?""He did,” she says immediately. I don’t say anything, so she continues. "He apologised for everything.""What does 'everything' mean?"She looks away briefly at first, then back at me again. “Our marriage. He apolog

The moment the question leaves my mouth, Elara’s eyes widen. In that same second, she freezes, her shoulders stiffening just as her lips part, then close again, panic flashing on her face before she hides it. So she knows. She knows exactly what I'm asking. When she says nothing but just stares at me, I repeat, “What is it between you and Adrian?" I watch as her throat moves when she swallows. Then, she shakes her head and says, “nothing.”I don’t say anything. I just nod, but it’s not because I believe her. I already expected her to lie again. So, I just repeat after her. “So, nothing.”She nods immediately, then shakes her head again, her eyes glinting with suppressed panic and fear like she’s trying so hard not to make it obvious. “Nothing.”I look at her for a long moment, studying her before eventually saying, “So, if it was nothing…” I let my words trail off. “If it was nothing, why did you lie to me?”Silence follows. I don’t even move from where I’m standing to make her

The drive home is quieter than the drive there.A lot quieter — obviously— given Theo isn’t here to make any noise. For the first ten minutes, I keep expecting my phone to ring. I expect it to buzz with a text too, or just do something, but it doesn’t. And the silence gives my thoughts too much room to wander, especially Theo’s reaction to being told he was going to meet his father. I have no idea why I was surprised by his excitement. I really shouldn’t have since this kid hasn’t seen his father in a while now, but I’d been, and it forced me to sit with the guilt of realizing I never for once thought of letting them both meet. Hell, I’d even refused in the first place. Doesn’t that make me a terrible mother? A selfish mother too? A small part of me says I’m really not — that I was just trying to protect him. But the other part — the reasonable one — says I was, and the excitement, the smile, and how he’d ran to meet Adrian was enough proof of that. So which of them is right?Th

When Theo comes out of his room after I have gotten ready, he's changed into a blue football jersey and black shorts. His hair is still damp from his shower, and there’s a football tucked under one of his arm. Perfect. I’m aware he plans to go play ball at the small field behind the penthouse that Nathaniel put up for him, but now, I’m going to take him to see his father. As if he can feel my gaze on him, he looks up immediately, and his brows pull into a frown. “Why are you dressed?”I blink. “What kind of question is that?""You have your bag,” he points at my handbag accusingly. “That means you’re going somewhere."I stare at him, my lips curling into my first real smile. Sometimes I genuinely think this child should become a detective."Maybe,” I say. “Maybe I’m going out.”His eyes narrow immediately. “Where?"I grab my car keys from the console. “Theo.""Mummy.”"Theo.""Mummy,” he responds again. I sigh, amused by how impossible he is. “No one has ever told you patience i

I could barely get any sleep throughout the night. Every time I closed my eyes, I found myself thinking back to the stupid meeting with Adrian as the sound of his voice and the words he said replayed in my mind again and again. ‘I still love you.’I’ve never thought these three words would sound stupid to my ears. And by the time morning comes, I find myself genuinely exhausted. The worst part is that I don’t know why on earth I won’t stop thinking about them. It could be that my mind is holding onto it for shock value because Adrian never used to say things like that. During the time we were married, he never said he loved me, and neither did he when things were falling part. Not even when I was begging him to look at me and see me.And now, he decides it’s to time to say it.Now. After I’ve moved on with my life, he wants to bring me down so I can join him in the trenches. Pushing away the thoughts to the back of my mind, I I stare down at my coffee. The dark liquid has gone

Theo's question manages to make me stop breathing. And that's because it's the distaste of this entire situation condensed into one painful honest sentence. I mean, I've never ignored the possibility of it being asked, but even as I stare at him, it sounds really insane. And from a child's persp

As a man who loves to thrive on silence, the house feels too quiet to me after Elara leaves. And I don’t even realize I’m still standing near the window overlooking the driveway of the building until I hear the soft sound of footsteps behind me. Theo speaks before I can turn. “She forgot her s

I stop in my tracks the moment I walk into the kitchen after showering. Because Theo is seated on the kitchen counter, eating fruit while Nathaniel is standing near the gas cooker, making pancakes. Given I’d just walked in, I can’t really tell what exactly the topic of discussion is, especially

I wake up slowly to the feeling of warmth enveloping me. The next thing I feel after that is the weight of an arm around my waist from behind me beneath the blanket, and I have to blink through my disorientation before I remember where I am. And that’s when the memories from last night begin to
