Victor drove straight to Daniel’s school.

The parking area was crowded with parents who had come to pick up their children. As Victor stepped out of the car, he let out a quiet sigh.

If only I could pick him up as his father… not like this.

He pushed the thought away and walked toward the school building.

A few teachers standing near the entrance immediately noticed him.

“Whose father is that?” one whispered.

“He’s so handsome,” another murmured, barely hiding her curiosity.

Victor was used to

The Last StrawShe drove like the roads were personal.Every traffic light felt like an insult. Every slow car ahead of her felt deliberately placed. By the time she pulled up to the house her hands were tight on the wheel and her jaw ached from holding everything in.She let herself in and stood outside .Quiet. Empty. Daniel is not back yet.She closed her eyes.Good. She needed this house to herself, just for a moment, just enough space to fall apart a little before she had to put herself back together for her son.She went to the kitchen and stood there, not cooking, not doing anything just standing, her hands braced against the counter, the thoughts she had spent years carefully burying pushing up through the surface like they’d never been gone at all.The accident. The hospital. Coming home to an empty house with a baby she hadn’t planned to raise alone, learning very quickly that alone was exactly what she was.The early years the exhaustion of them, the particular grinding l

Old WoundsThe picnic had given her something she hadn’t expected.Peace. Quiet, uncomplicated peace the kind she hadn’t felt in so long she’d almost forgotten what it felt like. The birds, the light coming soft through the trees, Daniel’s voice carrying across the grass, the flower Victor had tucked behind her ear that she hadn’t removed until she was back in the car and even then had held between her fingers for a moment before setting it down.I just want you to forgive me.She turned the words over on the drive home, the way you turn something fragile over in your hands carefully, not quite sure whether to hold on or set it down. She genuinely didn’t know what to do with them.Julian was standing on the front path when they pulled up.She saw him before she’d even opened the car door the set of his shoulders, the particular stillness of someone who has been waiting and has used the waiting time to build a case.“Elara.” His voice was controlled. Careful. “Where have you been?

The PicnicVictor opened his mouth. Closed it.Of all the ambushes he had prepared himself for in his life boardroom negotiations, hostile takeovers, Martin none of them had been a six-year-old in dinosaur pyjamas asking him to account for his feelings before eight in the morning.“Talk fast, Uncle,” Daniel said helpfully. “Do you like Mummy? Because if you like her and you don’t do something about it, Uncle Julian is going to take her away from you.”Victor stared at him. This child. This impossibly perceptive, entirely unreasonable child.“Where did you even” He stopped. Regrouped. “How do you know things like that?”Daniel said nothing. Simply waited, with the patience of someone who had asked a direct question and intended to receive a direct answer.Victor shifted. Then nodded once small, careful, not entirely sure what he was admitting to.“YAY.” Daniel’s whole face ignited. “I knew it! I knew you liked”“Hey.” Victor held up a hand. “Hold on. Not not the way you mean. I like

Victor followed her to the door.“Why did you come outside, Elara?”She didn’t answer. She walked ahead of him up the path and through the front door, wringing water from the hem of her raincoat, not looking back.Inside, Daniel was at the top of the stairs, peering down with wide eyes.“Mum! Why did you go out in the rain?”She hung up her coat without answering.“Elara.” Victor’s voice was quieter now, but persistent. He wasn’t convinced not by the phone excuse, not by any of it. “Why did you really come out?”She spun around.“Why do I care?” Her voice came out sharper than she’d planned, the words tumbling out before she could arrange them properly. “Because you didn’t answer. Because your phone was off and you were supposed to be back hours ago and I thought — maybe something happened. Maybe you got caught in the rain and got sick. Maybe the hospital called and something happened to Alaric and you just didn’t come home.” She stopped. Caught herself. Looked away. “I went to check

Victor’s pov He made it four blocks before he hit the steering wheel. Not hard enough to hurt just enough to have somewhere to put it. The anger had been sitting in his chest since the moment Julian walked through that door with his enormous bouquet and his carefully arranged smile, and it had nowhere else to go.How dare he.Not even the gesture itself the flowers, the wine, the biscuits arranged like a performance. It was the smile. That particular smile, aimed at Victor through the kitchen window like a flag planted in conquered ground. I win. You lose. Look at her smiling.Victor laughed short and humorless and merged onto the main road.He had no right to be this angry. He knew that. Elara owed him nothing not loyalty, not consideration, not the careful space she’d been giving him these past weeks. She owed him nothing at all. And yet he’d sat at that breakfast table and felt something quietly, tentatively beginning the salt, the chilli sauce, the way she’d remembered with

Julian didn't just walk into the room; he colonized it. He draped his designer jacket over the back of the chair Victor had just vacated to get more water, an unspoken claim of territory."I thought you could use a pick-me-up, Elara," Julian said, his voice smooth and projecting loudly enough to ensure Victor heard every syllable. "I know the hospital nights are draining. I called your favorite bistro—they're delivering a full spread for lunch later. You shouldn't have to worry about a thing."Elara set the massive bouquet on the island, her face slightly flushed. "Julian, this is... it's a lot. Thank you." She looked toward Victor, perhaps searching for a reaction, but Victor was staring intently at a crumb on the tablecloth."It’s nothing," Julian replied, finally turning his gaze to Victor. His smile didn't reach his eyes. "Oh, Victor. Still here? I assume the 'nursing' duties are going well? It must be exhausting, playing house while your father is... well, in that state."The ins
