I sat alone in my room, my eyes dancing from the wardrobe to the mirror not far from it. It felt boring, just sitting here and doing nothing. I felt myself start to stand up before I even knew where I was heading to.

The drawing of the lonely girl stared back at me and I felt a sudden tightness form in my chest. My hands landed on the door and I found myself knocking.

“Who is it?” her voice came from inside, whiny and clearly unwelcoming.

It was my chance to turn back around and go to my r

By the time everything was tidied away, Lily was struggling to keep her eyes open. Aaron carried her upstairs, listening as she continued talking about the evening. "Did you like your birthday, Daddy?" He smiled. "I loved it, sweetheart." "Even the cake?" "Especially the cake." She giggled, resting her head against his shoulder. "Emma helped me choose it." "I know. You both did a wonderful job." Lily was quiet for a moment. Then she lifted her head. "Daddy?" "Hmm?" "When I blew out the candles, I made a wish." Aaron smiled. "Did you?" She nodded seriously. "But I'm not supposed to tell anyone." "Then I won't ask." Lily considered that before whispering, "I wished that you and Emma would always stay together." Aaron's steps slowed. He looked down at his daughter. "Is that what you wished for?" She nodded. "Because I like it when she's here. And I like when you smile." Something tightened in his chest. He reached the bedroom and gently placed her on the bed, pulling the

Aaron noticed something was happening. For three consecutive evenings, Emma and Lily had been whispering whenever he entered a room. On one occasion, they had practically jumped away from each other when he walked into the kitchen. He was beginning to feel excluded. "What are you two plotting?" Emma looked up from the counter. "Nothing." Aaron narrowed his eyes. "That was suspiciously quick." Lily giggled. "We're not telling you!" "Well, that confirms my suspicions." Emma laughed, pretending to be offended. "You're becoming paranoid." "Perhaps I should be." He walked over, kissed the top of Emma's head and headed towards the refrigerator. She watched him leave, smiling. Lily immediately whispered, "We almost got caught." Emma pressed a finger to her lips. "Shhh." The evening of Aaron's birthday arrived. He had been told that Emma wanted to have dinner with him at home, so he returned earlier than usual. The moment he stepped into the mansion, the lights came on. "Surpris

He stopped immediately. "Hey." Emma looked down, struggling to find the words. "I'm sorry. I just..." She trailed off. "You don't have to apologise." She swallowed. "I don't know if I'm ready." Aaron moved back slightly, giving her space."That's alright." She looked at him, almost expecting disappointment. There was none. He brushed his thumb gently over her cheek. "We don't have to do anything you're not comfortable with, Emma. There's no rush." Her eyes softened. "Are you sure?” He smiled. "Absolutely." He leaned forward and pressed a gentle kiss against her forehead. "Come on. Let me walk you upstairs." Aaron accompanied her to her bedroom, keeping his hand loosely around hers. At her door, Emma turned towards him. "Thank you." He frowned slightly. "For what?" "For understanding." His expression softened. "You don't ever have to thank me for that." She smiled. He leaned down, kissing her forehead once more. "Goodnight, Emma.” “Goodnight, Aaron." He waited until she

The storm began just after eight that evening. Emma was sitting in the living room with a book when a loud rumble of thunder shook the windows. She glanced towards them, watching the rain come down heavily against the glass. She had always enjoyed storms, particularly when she was indoors with nowhere else to be. Another flash of lightning illuminated the room. Then everything went dark. Emma blinked. "Oh, wonderful." She reached for her phone, switching on its flashlight just as the door opened. "Emma?"Aaron's voice came from the doorway. "I'm here." "Are you alright?" "Perfectly fine. Unless the electricity has decided to abandon us permanently.” He chuckled, walking into the room. "I'll have someone check the generator." A few minutes later, one of the household staff informed them that the backup generator had developed a fault during the storm. Repairs would take some time. Aaron instructed everyone to remain indoors and asked the staff to bring candles. Lily had alre

"I look forward to breakfast because I know you'll probably have something sarcastic to say. I look forward to coming home because I know you'll be here. And I find myself thinking about you when I'm supposed to be concentrating on a hundred other things." He gave a quiet laugh. "Honestly, it's rather inconvenient." Emma laughed softly, but her eyes had begun to glisten. Aaron reached across the table. "So no, Emma. I don't regret marrying you." She placed her hand in his. "Even though it wasn't supposed to be real?" He looked at her. "Perhaps that's the part I regret." Her brows drew together. "What do you mean?" "That we had to put a contract around something that has become considerably more important to me." Emma's lips parted slightly, but she didn't respond. Aaron wondered whether he had said too much. Still, he didn't take it back. Later that night, Aaron found himself in the sitting room with Emma. The television was playing quietly in the background, altho

  • Divorced By One Billionaire, Claimed By Another   Chapter 96

Aaron walked down the hallway towards his bedroom, still smiling. He had intended to keep some distance between them. He remembered that quite clearly. Yet, somehow, he had spent the entire evening finding excuses to touch her, introducing her to people with a pride he hadn't expected to feel and looking forward to getting her alone. He stopped outside his bedroom door. This was becoming dangerous. He was beginning to want things that their agreement had never promised him. And for the first time, Aaron wondered whether he was still capable of pretending that Emma was simply his contract wife. Aaron had begun to notice the little things about Emma. The way she smiled whenever he entered a room, how she occasionally reached for his hand without seeming to realise she was doing it, and how she had developed the habit of stealing his coffee whenever hers was finished. He noticed all of it. But there was something else he had recently become aware of. Emma had a habit of going quie
