•Juliet POV•

We sat in the office, with Edward and I seated across from the Chinese man’s desk, while Vera lounged on a chair near the window. I pulled Jace close, and he rested his head on my chest, my arm wrapped protectively around him.

Vera had insisted we wait until we were certain the boy was no longer a threat to Jace. It had been nearly forty minutes when the door finally creaked open, making my head snap toward it. A boy stepped in, or rather, was pushed in. He was slightly taller than Jace and carried a proud, almost smug look on his face. His arms were crossed stubbornly as he hesitated to step fully into the room.

"Why do you always act this way?" the teacher scolded, giving him a nudge forward. He barely moved.

Jace cringed against me, and I bent low to whisper softly in his ear. "I'm here, baby. He won’t hurt you."

Edward's voice cut through the air, sharp but low. "So this is the boy who's been bullying my son. I didn’t know little children could be this cruel."
