The drive back to the mansion was quiet. I sat in the passenger seat next to Eric, my head leaning lightly against the window. The streetlights passed in soft blurs as we moved through the night. My phone sat heavy in my palm as I scrolled through the endless stream of comments online.

People were talking about Juliet, about the accident that led to her being in a coma, saying they didn’t know it was that bad. Some were angry at the silence, others were just relieved she was still alive. The outpouring of support was growing by the second, people sending prayers, love, and hope.

It should have comforted me, but instead, my chest tightened. I couldn’t stop thinking about Mrs. Ryder and how her reckless actions had nearly put Juliet’s life in danger at the hospital. A dull ache spread through me, anger mixing with exhaustion. I shut off my phone with a sharp tap and let out a long breath, my eyes finding the window again.
