CLARISSA.

I’d known that there was something off about the way my breakfast tasted that morning, but because I had chosen not to overthink it, I’d ignored it. Or wait — it wasn’t like I didn't want to overthink it, but I’d instead chosen to keep the uneasiness I felt all morning aside and focus on the meeting I was to have later that day. I’d made frequent glances at my phone screen while I continued to eat, waiting for a message notification which was supposed to be my signal to start leaving for the meeting. But halfway through my food, I began to feel an odd, painless tightness in my chest.

So when my phone rang, I was grateful to have a very valid reason to leave the table and figure out what was wrong with me before I started to prepare for the meeting. I couldn’t afford to show up for the meeting feeling uncomfortable or disorganized. When I staggered the first time, after I had finally stood up from the dining table, I still tried to reassure myself that everything was fine, b

DEVAN.I sat in my study, the only light in the room coming from the glow of the laptop’s screen. My informant had gotten me the list I needed, and my fingers moved steadily across the keyboard as I sent out the final email. I’d drafted each message carefully, making sure to lace them with enough threats to spark fear, but vague enough to avoid legal backlash. I was desperate to get answers, but I made sure not to let my desperation cloud my sense of reasoning. We have evidence linking you to the recent attack on Bruce. If you don’t want this exposed, contact me immediately, the messages read. I leaned back into my chair and began counting the seconds, waiting and hoping that at least one of them would send a reply. But all I got in the first hour was silence, till the replies began to trickle in.The replies weren’t what I’d hoped for, as most of them flatly denied involvement in any

CLARISSA.Later that night, I tossed and turned on my bed, wide-awake and unable to sleep. The house had fallen into its usual silence, and aside from the chilly wind which blew against the windows, the night was extremely cold and quiet. I sat up on my bed, feeling restless as I tried to make sense of what had happened to me earlier today, and yet I could make nothing tangible of it. The doctor’s words, affirming that he had found something in my system, confirmed my fears that there was something indeed wrong with my breakfast that morning, and in the still silence of the night, my heart thudded loudly within me, leaving me unsettled. In one swift movement, I got off the bed, put on my night robe, and slipped out of the room, heading straight for the staff quarters. Something was not right, and there was no way I could sleep without getting the answers I needed. My feet felt cold on the marble floor as I entered the hallway that led

DEVAN.I leaned back in my chair as I sat in the peaceful quiet of my study, a glass of scotch whiskey in my hand. I nodded gently to the rhythm of the jazz music playing in the headphones I placed over my head. I scrolled lazily through my phone while waiting patiently for the call I’d been expecting all day. My mind drifted to Clarissa and I remembered that I’d not heard from her all morning, and just as I decided to give her a call, my phone began to buzz. The caller ID showed ‘private’, and I immediately knew it was one of my informants.I picked up the call immediately, my voice low and controlled. “News?”“It’s Bruce,” the voice on the other end said in a low tone.“What about him?” I asked.“He’s no longer coming to the office, sir. He’ll be working remotely now, from home.I s

ISABELLA.More than a week had passed since I returned to LA from Texas where I’d gone to meet up with Bruce to come up with a plan. I’d not found the perfect time to strike yet as Clarissa had spent most of her days working at our father’s company and returning very late at night — hours after our father would have returned home from work. On the occasions when I asked him why he left her behind at the office, his response was short and simple: “She says she’ll be home later”, and on the days I was to see her around, she was either hurrying out of the house for the office or on some long phone call with God-knows-who.I waited patiently and kept bidding my time till the perfect opportunity came two weekends later. I had observed that Clarissa had taken a liking to early morning breakfast especially on weekends, and so on this day, I had come down and had gone into the kitchen at the exact same time I knew the chef would be having it prepared for her. “Good morning, ma'am,” the chef

FREDA.“Freda,” Mena called out. I heard her the first time, but because I was completely lost in my thoughts, her voice felt feathery in my ears.“Freda!” she called out again, taping me lightly this time. “Are you alright?”I snapped out of my thoughts and turned to face her. “Yes?”“Are you alright? What happened?” she asked me.“I’m… fine,” I answered hesitantly.“Well, I’m not convinced that you are, because you don’t look like you’re fine to me. In fact, you look like you just saw a ghost,” she said.I said nothing as I continued to stare at her blankly.“Who was that? I heard you call him Lucas. Who’s he and what did he say that put you off so bad?” Mena asked again.
