Mag-log inThe young woman was none other than Lucas's older sister, Sabrina Hale.
The man in the wheelchair was their father, Raymond Hale. The elegant woman behind them was their mother, Margaret Hale. The three of them had just returned from a shopping trip to the harbor town, and had stumbled straight into this scene. Hannah said nothing. The divorce agreement was already signed, and the Hales were no longer her concern. Before Lucas could speak, Raymond frowned from his wheelchair and asked in a low voice, "Luke, what is going on here?" Margaret, however, had already sensed something. Spotting Attorney Crawford sorting papers off to one side, she probed carefully. "Luke, why is Attorney Crawford here? Surely you aren't... planning a divorce?" Lucas didn't deny it. He fixed his gaze on Hannah, his eyes dark. "You're right, Mother. I called him here because I'm divorcing Hannah." Margaret's eyes lit up, and she clapped her hands in delight. "Oh, what wonderful news! Luke, I've begged you so many times, and now you've finally come to your senses!" Raymond couldn't hide his satisfaction. "Ha! Good riddance! Your mother and I have been saying so since we got home. Cut ties with that woman before she ends the Hale line! That way our family can have an heir!" He nodded, thoroughly pleased with the decision. Sabrina smirked. "Well, well. Did the sun rise in the west today? You're actually going through with it? Luke, you're not just teasing us, are you?" But Lucas's voice was unusually firm. "Sister, I'm serious. I really am divorcing her." Seeing that he meant it, Sabrina dropped the mockery. Then her gaze slid to Victoria, standing behind him, and she looked her over with open contempt. "Dear brother, did you divorce Hannah because of this woman?" "This has nothing to do with Vicky," Lucas said. "Hannah simply doesn't know what's good for her." Margaret couldn't hold her tongue. "Luke, you've only just realized how ungrateful she is? I told you a hundred times! That vixen is good for nothing but seducing men. All she does is take Hale money to feed her own family. Listen to me: when you divorce her, make sure Attorney Crawford gets back every coin you gave her brother. We cannot let the Winters family profit from us!" "Yes, Mother. Don't worry about it." Hannah felt a chill run down her spine as she watched the Hales celebrate. For years she had given herself to this family, body and soul. She worked from before dawn until night, serving her parents-in-law with all her heart and granting her sister-in-law's every demand. She was a servant in all but name. Each morning she rose before sunrise to prepare a lavish breakfast, and each night she finished by cleaning the entire manor. Sabrina's daughter was allergic to hair, and Margaret had been unhappy with the maid's cleaning, so she simply dismissed her. After that, every dirty, exhausting chore fell to Hannah. She also massaged Raymond's legs every day and took Sabrina's daughter to and from school. Yet for all her sacrifice, no one respected her. Anyone could bully her. Lucas barely noticed what she did, and thought it all trivial. Whenever she complained, he told her to be patient, as though everything were perfectly reasonable. In the Hales' eyes, she was nothing. Her place was lower than that of the family dog. Raymond, shrewd and experienced, sensed something between Lucas and Victoria at once. "Luke, isn't this the friend Hannah often brings home? What's going on between you two?" Victoria stepped forward and gave Raymond what she believed was a flawless smile. "Hello, Uncle Hale. I'm Luke's friend, Victoria Ashford. I used to visit your home often. You remember my name, don't you?" Margaret gave her no friendly look at all. She attacked at once. "And where did you crawl from, you little vixen? What are you doing in our house? Trying to seduce my Luke?" She glared fiercely. In her view, no one Hannah brought into the Hale home was ever any good. Lucas's face darkened. "Mother, what are you saying? I invited Vicky here. Don't speak to her that way. Be polite." Raymond noticed how protective his son was, and his own attitude softened. He smiled at Victoria. "Of course I remember you, Miss Ashford. Your aunt is just blunt, and she often speaks without thinking. She means no harm. I hope you won't take it to heart." Victoria smiled gently. "Please don't worry, Uncle. I understand. Auntie surely didn't mean it. I won't think of it again." Her smile was as warm as spring wind, and it won people over easily. Margaret glared at her once more and snorted, but said nothing. Inwardly she thought: This woman is no good. We must never let her through the Hale door again, the way we did before! Hannah didn't want to stay a moment longer. She picked up her bag from the sofa and turned to leave. Just then, Sabrina called after her in an unfriendly tone. "Hannah Winters, what's wrong? Leaving so soon?"Eleanor hesitated, but she agreed. "Well... in that case, I'll pack and go to Rosalind in a few days."Edmund cut in firmly. "There's no need to wait. We leave first thing tomorrow morning! The sooner we arrive, the sooner we can prepare. I can also use the trip to introduce Rosalind to the heir of the Smith family. She's so outstanding that if we form a bond with that house, it will greatly help the Harrington Group's expansion into foreign markets."Once she heard it touched the family's business, Eleanor stopped wavering. She gave Hannah an apologetic look and spoke softly."Hannah, Mom has to go away for a while. Focus on your studies while I'm gone. When I'm back, I'll spend much more time with you."Hannah smiled and nodded. "Okay, Mom. I'll study hard at home."Seeing how obedient and understanding her daughter was, Eleanor felt comforted. But Sebastian's face darkened. He frowned."Father, this heir of the Smith family. Do you mean Herbert Smith, the one tangled up in all thos
Night fell over the Harrington manor. In the great dining hall, a vast table was crowded with dishes that made the mouth water.Foie gras, caviar, black truffles, deep-sea tuna, king crab, Southern Isles lobster, prized highland beef...The finest delicacies from every corner of the world covered the table, their aromas curling through the air. The meal was worth more than an ordinary family earned in a year.Eleanor had spent the whole day leading Hannah around the island, and Hannah had been astonished a hundred times over. After seeing the Harringtons' extravagance, nothing surprised her anymore. No wonder people say the happiness of the rich is beyond imagination. If you're not happy, you simply aren't rich enough!Eleanor had also told her the truth about her sister, Rosalind.Rosalind was not Edmund and Eleanor's blood child. After Hannah was stolen, Eleanor wept day after day. She lost her appetite, her mind frayed, and eventually she fell into a very serious sickness of the sp
Inside the lift, Eleanor happily explained the layout."The second floor is your father's and my chamber. The third is Sebastian's. The fourth is Rosalind's. And the fifth is yours alone!"She squeezed Hannah's hand. "Everything is ready. If anything isn't to your liking, tell me, and I'll have a designer redo it."Hannah nodded. "I'll like whatever you and Dad arranged. There's nothing I'd change."The lift doors slid open, and a breath of luxury drifted out.Hannah stepped through into a magnificent entrance hall, as if she had walked into a palace. She stood frozen, stunned.Slowly she walked deeper in, and an enormous sitting hall opened before her. Its ceiling was painted with a glittering starry sky, casting a wondrous glow. The hall alone must have been over five thousand square feet. It held a lounge, a reception salon, a hall for entertainment, a small concert hall, a dining room, a tavern bar and a kitchen, every corner elegant and comfortable. The furniture was arranged wit
Edmund's face went dark and still, like a stagnant pool.Sebastian's words were not without sense. Hannah carried his blood, yet she had let herself be humiliated this far. She was hardly fit for any important task.If it had been Rosalind, she would have kept the Hales firmly in hand, and there would have been no divorce, no betrayal. In the end, it was because Hannah hadn't been raised at their side. She lacked experience and polish, and so she wasn't ready for the public eye.Eleanor frowned in thought, as if sharing the same worry.Seeing his father silent, Sebastian kept quiet too. He had already gotten what he wanted.Ha. She doesn't even know what she is. She has no ability and no education, and she still dreams of being loved by her parents. Dream on.Hannah's thoughts churned as she listened. She could see plainly that Sebastian harbored a deep hostility toward her. Her own brother did not want her in the family. His words were meant to drive a wedge between her and Edmund, t
Hannah looked around. The great hall was vast, bright and dazzling, every inch of it breathing grandeur. Her lips parted slightly, her face full of awe.Off to one side, Sebastian watched her with deep disdain.Ha. What an ignorant creature. If she weren't his parents' blood, he would never have wanted anything to do with someone of her station.Edmund and Eleanor had eyes only for their daughter, and didn't notice him.Hannah wandered across the hall, praising everything she saw."Mom, Dad, our home is so beautiful! It's so big, calling it a palace wouldn't be an exaggeration!"Eleanor smiled and stroked her hair. "Hannah, I've had the fifth floor decorated for you. Go up and see if you like it. If anything isn't to your taste, tell me, and your father and I will bring in a designer to redo it however you wish." Her voice overflowed with love.Hannah smiled. "Since you arranged it, I'll love it, whatever the style.""If you like it, that's all I need! If you like it, that's enough!"
Hannah stood stunned, unsure how to respond. Then the young man stepped forward and looked her over. A flash of disgust crossed his eyes and was gone in an instant."Father, Mother, is this my real sister?"Edmund and Eleanor nodded quickly."That's right, Sebastian. She is your sister."The young man showed no surprise. He gave a slight nod, his expression distant, his eyes cool and aloof. He extended his hand and spoke calmly."Hello. I'm Sebastian Harrington, your older brother. If calling me 'brother' feels too familiar, you may simply call me Sebastian."It was as stiff and formal as the opening of a business meeting. There was none of the warmth that should have existed between siblings.Hannah was puzzled by his manner. She hesitated, then politely shook his hand."Hello, Sebastian. I'm Hannah Winters..."Before she could finish, Edmund cut in. "Hannah, now that you're home with the Harringtons, it's time to introduce yourself differently."Her heart tightened, and she correcte
