Maya

The phone rang like a fire alarm in the dark.

I'd finally fallen asleep on my bedroom floor around midnight, curled up against the foot of my bed with my knees tucked to my chest. Not exactly comfortable, but moving to the actual mattress had felt like too much effort. Everything felt like too much effort.

Vincent's name glowed on the screen instead. 2:14 AM.

"What?" My voice came out like gravel.

"Ms. Vega." Vincent's voice was different. Careful in a way that made my stomach clench. "I apologize for the hour."

I sat up, suddenly more awake. Vincent didn't call at 2 AM unless someone was dead or dying. "What's wrong?"

"Mr. Russo would like to see you. Tonight."

"Tonight?" I looked around my dark bedroom, still wearing the sweater from yesterday, eyes probably swollen from crying. "Vincent, it's two in t

Maya"That's none of your business.""Excuse me?" The shock of her response snapped me out of my spiraling thoughts. "You ambush me in a parking lot with life-altering information about my friend, and I don't get to know why?""I have my reasons." She looked away, staring out the window at the empty park. "They don't concern you.""Bullshit." I released the steering wheel and turned fully toward her. "Everything about this concerns me. You and Daniel have been working together to destroy me for years. Why the sudden change of heart? What game are you playing now?""It's not a game!" She turned back, color rising in her hollow cheeks. "Not everything is about you, Maya. God, you've always been so self-centered."

  • Divorced My CEO Husband, He Came Begging   Fiona's Last Truth

MayaThe Kingston mansion shrank in my rearview mirror as I pulled away, my hands steadier on the wheel than I'd expected. The morning sun sliced through the trees lining the driveway, creating strobing patterns across the windshield that matched the chaos in my head.I'd just threatened my father with evidence of murder. The look on his face when I mentioned it—that split second of naked fear before he recovered—would stay with me forever. For once in my life, I'd held the power in that room. I'd watched the great Robert Kingston, master manipulator and corporate titan, go pale at the mention of his darkest secret. And God help me, part of me had enjoyed it.I was so lost in the memory that I almost didn't notice the figure stepping o

  • Divorced My CEO Husband, He Came Begging   My First Threat

MayaRobert's study had always been forbidden territory growing up. The heavy oak door remained closed to everyone except visiting executives and the occasional politician. Even Mother knocked before entering. I'd spent years wondering what really went on behind the door. Now I pushed it open without hesitation, the hinges protesting as if offended by my audacity.Robert Kingston sat behind his massive desk, reading glasses perched on his nose, reviewing what looked like financial reports. He glanced up at the intrusion, his expression shifting from annoyance to something more calculated when he saw me."Maya." He removed his glasses carefully, setting them aside. "This is unexpected."“Is it not?" I remained standing, refusing the seat he hadn't

MayaI tried Chen first. His assistant's voice was professionally apologetic. "Mr. Chen is in meetings all morning. May I take a message?""This is Maya Vega. About the board meeting tomorrow—""He asked me to tell you he's very sorry for your loss, Ms. Vega. He'll see you at the meeting."Click.Martinez was worse. He took the call himself, voice careful and distant. "Maya, my condolences. Giuseppe was—""I need to know where you stand tomorrow," I cut him off. "The vote on reinstating Daniel, and possibly my voting rights."A pause. "I think it's best

  • Divorced My CEO Husband, He Came Begging   The Orphan

MayaI didn't know how long I sat there holding Giuseppe's hand. Could have been minutes, could have been an hour. Time felt broken, like someone had smashed the clock and left me with just the ticking. His skin kept getting colder. That was the weird part. How quickly warmth left a body. Five minutes ago he'd been talking, breathing, dropping bombs about Troy being Lupe's son. Now he was just... gone. Whatever made him Giuseppe had evaporated, leaving behind this empty shell that looked like him but wasn't.The grandfather clock kept ticking. Loud as hell in the silence.I should call Vincent, I thought. Tell him what happened. But calling meant letting go of Giuseppe's hand, and letting go felt like abandoning him. Which was stupid. He was dead. He didn't care if I held his hand or not.
