Damien Valecrest’s POV

Something is wrong with me.

I was just reviewing estate reports, then next, every instinct in my body had suddenly gone silent then screamed.

I put my pen down, slowly as though sudden movement might somehow fix whatever was happening.

Except that it didn’t, the sensation I couldn’t describe only intensified.

A strange pressure settled beneath my ribs, but it wasn’t painful.

It felt familiar.

My wolf surged forward so violently that I nearly crushed the armrest beneath my hand.

There, Damien.

I frowned with a tight grip.

What there?

Fenrir, my wolf then sounded agitated. And it shocked me, annoyed yes. Disappointed, often. Judgmental, constantly. But agitated? Never.

There.

He repeated the word again, more urgency in his tone now.

I stood abruptly and the advisors seated across from me immediately fell silent. One of them looked concerned, one looked scared, one looked shocked.

I ignored it all because Fenrir was still pushing.

He’s pacing and focused on something I couldn’t see, I tried to look around but that made the advisors even more frightened.

Find her, Damien.

My entire body froze, and the room froze with me.

I thought I’d misheard.

What?

Fenrir’s growl reverberated through my skull and repeated himself.

Find. Her.

A cold feeling settled in my stomach, because there was only one reason my wolf would react like this. One impossible reason.

No, absolutely not.

The timing alone made it impossible, Moonfang wolves rarely found mates. Most never even did. My grandfather hadn’t, my uncle as well hadn’t.

Two generations without a confirmed bond and the odds were practically nonexistent.

And yet.

Fenrir was losing his mind.

Move.

The command was so sharp I nearly staggered, and across the room, one of my advisors stood in an instant.

“Your Grace?”

I grabbed my coat and uttered, “Cancel everything for today.”

The poor man blinked before me.

“Everything, your Grace?” he asked in disbelief.

“Everything,” I responded.

Then I promptly left the room without waiting for anyone of them to speak or oppose to what I am going to do.

Twenty minutes later, I was sitting inside a car outside the city courthouse.

Still unsure how I’d gotten here, or why, and for what.

But Fenrir kept insisting and scared the driver off to drive here.

Still unsure why Fenrir had dragged me halfway across the capital just to sit in a car and watch a courthouse stand on its own like there’s something mind blowing that’s going to happen.

The courthouse itself was unremarkable, gray stone, large windows, a government architecture designed by people who must’ve hated joy.

Nothing about it seemed special.

Yet Fenrir had not calmed down at all even after our arrival.

Not even slightly.

If anything, he had become worse.

She’s here.

I rubbed my temples.

“Who?”

No answer, then just repeated himself.

She’s here.

The courthouse doors opened and everything just stopped.

My thoughts, my breathing, my heartbeat, everything. Like the world even slowed down.

A woman emerged from the building.

Dark hair, elegant posture, fair skin, and documents tucked beneath her arm.

She was breath taking.

Beautiful.

But she looked exhausted, not physically, she looked tired soul-deep.

And for some reason, the sight made my chest ache.

Mate.

Fenrir’s voice was barely a whisper. Yet it shook me more than a roar ever could.

The world narrowed and there was only her.

Your Mate, Damien.

Fenrir stated and I didn’t know how to react, or say, nor do about that.

Then a second figure appeared behind her.

It was a man.

A tall, dark-haired man, in which I sensed as an Alpha.

The Alpha called after her and that made her stop. They exchanged a few words before walking away.

Alone.

The Alpha remained standing behind her, watching her leave and something about that scene unsettled me.

My brows furrowed looking at the man then calmer when I looked back at her.

I stared at her and at the documents she had with her. Then I was caught off guard when she looked into my direction.

My eyes widened and immediately looked away while frantically rolling the window up.

“Drive,” I said.

The feeling returned, the ache, the strange pressure beneath my ribs but this time, Fenrir lowered himself inside my mind.

Unusually quiet.

She is sad.

I looked at the air flabbergasted.

Is this Fenrir?

I can hear your thoughts, Damien.

I swallowed.

I don’t even know her, not even her name, but somehow my wolf’s words felt the same for me, because he was right, she indeed looked sad.

And for reasons I couldn’t explain.

I wanted to fix it.

But the thought immediately horrified me. Me? A Moonfang? Why would I act that way. I should be dignified.

Fenrir sounded pleased after that.

We should bring her food.

I nearly slammed my head into the dashboard.

“Absolutely not.”

But food helps.

“We don’t even know her,” I dismissed.

Then we should know her.

“Oh, that’s a terrible idea.” I pinched the arch of my nose.

Fenrir’s silence somehow felt smug and I glanced at my wrist.

There it was, the bond. A red string that only I could see started wrapping itself on my wrist and disappearing into the thin air before I could make sense of it.

I found myself staring in the air and thinking about one very dangerous thought.

I need to know who she is.

“Would you like me to wrap it up for you, Miss?” the attendant asked with a warm smile and a stare that looks like she’s teasing me.I glanced down at the midnight-blue gown and answered, “I’ll take it.”She then beamed, “Excellent choice!”Nyx stretched lazily inside my head and I rolled my eyes as the attendant disappeared towards the register. Damien had already stepped aside, giving me space for some reason I have no idea on.“So,” I said as we waited.“Do you always analyze stranger to recommend clothes to them? You can definitely work on sales,” I joked. His lips curved over my statement, “Only those significant enough to observe.”I looked at him, “Am I significant?”“I didn’t say that,” he denied and looked at the ceiling.Nyx whispered. He’s scary.”You said you liked him, what, swallowing words now huh?”I did say that. “In hindsight,” Damien said, glancing at the boutique surrounding us before looking down at the shopping bags hanging from his wrist, ‘That sounds unlikely.”A laugh escaped me before I could stop it, and it caught both of us off guard. His brows lifted ever so slightly, as if he hadn’t expected that reaction from me.“I apologize,” he said.“What? For what?”“My explanation lacked credibility, pardon me.”“You think so?” I questioned.I folded my arms, the corners of my lips refusing to settle. “So, you’re admitting that you lied?” I asked.“I admitted my explanation was poor, my lady,” he said like it was final. His expression remained completely serious, as I stared at him for a second before shaking my head then said, “You do realize most people would at least attempt to defend themselves at times like this.”“I considered it, yes.” He shrugged.“And? You know what you’re funny, I’d give that to you.”“

Genevieve Everhart’s POVThe first morning after my divorce felt surprisingly ordinary. There’s no overwhelming sense of freedom. Neither devastating heartbreak waiting to greet me the moment I opened my eyes.Just sunlight spilling through the curtains, birds chirping somewhere outside my apartment, and Nyx grumbling because I had rolled over the bed over one too many times during the night. You snore.“I do not.”You absolutely do, loud I thought it was earthquake.“I, I breathe. Just aggressively,” I denied. You drool too.“I liked you better when you’re questioning Nathan.”Nyx immediately went quiet.“Thought so,” I scoffed.I pushed myself upright and stretched, only to freeze when my eyes landed on the empty side of the bed. For years, waking up meant instinctively checking whether Nathan had already left for training or if he’d fallen asleep beside me after another late-night council meeting. Now there was nothing, no lingering scent of cedarwood the moment I open my eyes. The door was closed shut and for several seconds, the only sound left in the room was the faint hum of his footsteps through the hallway and the click of the door he left closed.“House of Vale…”The words escaped my mouth as the name once again lingered on my tongue, beside me, Nathan finally looked away from the door.“Do you know what that means?”I glanced at him.“You’ve heard of them? He asked once again.“I’ve heard the name,” I responded.“When?”I opened my mouth and then closed it thinking it might not be the best choice to answer honestly. I just know that House of Vale is one of the prestigious and powerful houses here. Other than that, I don’t even know much about Damien, I literally met him today, what can I say if I say all of this to Nathan.“Somewhere before, but I don’t know he’s from the Vale’s,” I uttered.“If you’re hiding things from me, Genevieve, you know what’s coming for you,” he said and stared right through me.I put my gaze back at him and stared at him wit

Damien then walked back to his seat and continued to finish every drop of the tea remaining on his cup.“I think with this size, it will perfectly fit her.” I glanced it and put the box on the table before pushing it towards him.“I can handle my own dress,” I continued.“Are you sure? This is originally for you.” He held it.“I don’t want anything to do with you or your mom so better keep it or let another person intended for it, use it.”Nathan just froze on his seat, looking at me with pure disbelief on what he is hearing. The room then felt too narrow for three of us carrying entirely different storms.I rested one hand against the edge of my apartment door, silently wondering how my peaceful afternoon had somehow turned into this.Just a finalized divorce, then a mysterious stranger who came knocking at my door that my wolf doesn’t even push away, and now an ex-husband sitting in the same room with us like the conversation in the court hadn’t even happened. The silence stretched j
