Chapter 3

Author: Bagel
My words drove Joey into a rage, his face flushing a deep red.

I turned to leave, but he grabbed my wrist, his grip like a vise. "What did you say? My money's dirty?"

His fingers dug into my skin, and I winced in pain. "Adriana, don't push your luck!"

Vivian fanned the flames. "Joey, she's just putting on an act! She's obviously here with her tail between her legs, but she has to put on this holier-than-thou act!"

Joey stared into my eyes, and a self-satisfied smirk slowly spread across his face. "I get it."

He released my wrist and took a step back. "You're still mad at me, aren't you?"

"It's been three years, Adriana. You're still throwing a tantrum over that? It was nothing."

Angelo tugged on Vivian's skirt. "Mama Vivian, why is she mad at Daddy?"

Vivian crouched down, stroking Angelo's head gently. "Because she's jealous, sweetie. Jealous that Daddy has a better woman now."

"Jealous that you have a prettier new mommy."

Understanding dawned on Angelo's face. He pointed at me. "Oh, so she's jealous! No wonder she's acting so pathetic!"

Joey's ego swelled. He straightened his suit collar, adopting a magnanimous air. "Fine. Seeing as you're Angelo's birth mother, I'll give you a chance."

"In three days, the family is hosting a grand reception to welcome the Don. I can get you in as Angelo's nanny, so you can see how the other half lives."

"Joey is a goddamn saint!"

"Adriana, that's a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity! The entire New York high society will be there!"

"You'll never see a party of that caliber in your life!"

Joey looked down his nose at me. "Well? Isn't that generous enough for you?"

I stared at him coldly and said, one syllable at a time, "No. Thank. You."

The air crackled with tension. Everyone was stunned, as if they couldn't believe I would refuse such a "gracious" offer.

Joey's face turned thunderous. "What did you say?"

"I said, no thank you," I repeated. "We're divorced, Joey. A clean break is best. It prevents complications." I thought of my intensely jealous husband. Dante's possessiveness scared even me.

Being rejected again and again had finally pushed Joey over the edge. He pointed a finger at my nose and snarled, "Adriana! You ungrateful bitch!"

"I've been more than generous! What more could you possibly want?"

"Fine! Just fine!" He turned and wrapped his arm around Vivian's waist, his voice loud enough for the whole street to hear. "If that's how you want it, don't blame me for forgetting we had a history!"

"At the reception in three days, I'm going to walk in with Vivian and Angelo on my arm. I'll show the whole world who the real woman in my life is!"

Vivian leaned into Joey's embrace, her eyes locked on me in a triumphant challenge. "Adriana, when I'm Joey's wife, Angelo will be the prince of this family. And you? You'll be nothing but an outsider, looking in."

Angelo clapped his hands. "Yay! I'm going to wear my most handsome little suit! So everyone will know Vivian is my mommy!"

Watching their little family drama unfold, I felt nothing but profound disgust. But it was for the best. I only hoped they'd still be this arrogant in three days.

Three days later, the reception took place as scheduled.

The Moretti family's private club was a glittering palace of gold and crystal, filled with the elite of New York's underworld.

I wore light makeup and a black silk gown that Dante had chosen for me personally.

I wore no jewelry, and my hair was swept up in a simple, elegant knot.

The moment I stepped into the hall, I saw them.

Vivian was in a gown covered in rhinestones, a gaudy necklace around her neck, as if desperate for attention.

Angelo, stuffed into a tiny tuxedo, clutched her hand, playing the perfect little prince.

When Joey saw me, a flicker of confusion crossed his face.

He was probably wondering how the hell I got an invitation to an event of this caliber. He leaned over and whispered something to Vivian, who covered her mouth and giggled.

Angelo pointed at me and announced to the people around them, "See? That lady is my old mommy! She's my nanny now!"

Curious and judgmental glances shot my way from all directions.

"So, you couldn't stay away after all," Joey said, striding up to me with that familiar arrogance. "But if you're trying to win me back, at least show some class. An outfit like that is just embarrassing."

I ignored his baffling narcissism and walked past him toward my seat.

Joey, infuriated, grabbed my arm. "Adriana, I'm talking to you! Our seats are down there, where are you going?"

I shook his hand off. "Those are your seats, not mine."

I walked straight toward the back of the hall.

As I approached the head table, the seats reserved exclusively for the Don. The color drained from Joey's face.

"She's lost her mind," he muttered under his breath. "She's completely insane!"

Vivian saw where I was headed and let out a piercing shriek. "Joey! Look at that bitch! How dare she walk toward the Don's table?"

"Get her back here! She's going to get us all killed!"

The room was quiet again, leaving just the three of us.Matteo had been woken by the noise. He rubbed his eyes and asked:"Mama, what happened to that bad man? Did he bully you again?""It's okay, baby," I stroked his little head. "The bad man has been chased away."A week later, I was discharged and went home.To make my recovery easier, Dante had my art studio moved to the ground floor. One afternoon, while organizing Dante's study, I accidentally discovered a hidden compartment.Inside was a thick stack of photos and newspaper clippings.Curious, I took them out and began to look through them. I froze. They were all photos of me.From my teenage art exhibitions to photos of my life in my twenties. There was even a newspaper clipping from my very first art show. What shocked me most was that some of the photos I didn't even remember being taken. They had clearly been taken in secret."What are you looking at?"Dante's voice sounded from behind me, making me jump.I turned to see him

"Dante..." I looked at his exhausted face. "You haven't slept these past few days, have you?"He didn't answer, just squeezed my hand tighter."I thought I was going to lose you," his voice was soft, laced with a rare vulnerability."When I saw you lying in a pool of blood... I was so scared."I reached out and stroked his cheek. "I will never leave you.""Never."Dante lowered his head and placed a soft kiss on my lips. The kiss was light and gentle, as if confirming that I was truly alive."Rest for a few more days, and then we'll go home," he said.I nodded, then a thought occurred to me. "When did the doctor say I can be discharged?""Tomorrow," Dante replied. "But you'll need to rest at home for a while."Just then, the hospital room door was pushed open again.Assuming it was Carlie, I spoke without turning my head."That was fast.""Elena." Joey's voice was raw. He stood in the doorway, his face a swollen, bruised mess. "I knew you wouldn't give up on me."My head snapped toward

"I arrived just after you collapsed. Poor Matteo was terrified, seeing you so still.""Dante's eyes looked like he was ready to eat someone. After you were sent to the hospital, Matteo grabbed a fork and stabbed Vivian right in the hand. I have no idea where a three-year-old gets that kind of strength.""Later, when Dante learned what they had done to you, he had his men hold Joey down and took his fingers. One by one.""And Matteo... he watched the whole thing without flinching. He's a Moretti, through and through."Carlie took a sip of water and continued:"And because Vivian had scratched you.""Do you know what Dante did?"Carlie's voice dropped, trembling slightly. "He had his men hold her down. Then, in front of everyone, he took a pair of pliers and pulled out every single one of her fingernails.""With every nail he pulled, he asked, 'Still want what belongs to another?'""Vivian was screaming, so Dante had his men melt down all her gaudy jewelry. Then he forced the molten gold

I looked at the fragile hope in Dante's eyes, and my heart broke for him.The man who commanded New York's underworld was, in that moment, just a boy desperate to be loved."Yes, Dante," I whispered, stroking his cheek. "I belong only to you.""Always."Hearing my answer, the smile on Dante's face grew even brighter. He carefully kissed my forehead, as if I were the most precious treasure in the world.Joey, seeing us ignore him completely, clenched his fists, his face contorted with anger.Matteo had no patience for this loser either."My mama is the queen of our house. You're nobody."Matteo looked Joey up and down with disgust. "I know all about you. How does a scumbag who hurt my mama have the nerve to compare himself to my Papa?""You're not as handsome as my Papa, not as tall as my Papa, and you don't have my Papa's status."The little one wrinkled his nose. "And a loser who leeches off women stinks of desperation. It's pathetic."The surrounding guests let out a soft, complicit

After the examination, the doctor rose respectfully. He looked at Dante and reported in a formal tone:"Don, the Donna's injuries are superficial. There's no serious damage.""But the young master was frightened. He will need comforting."The words "young master" struck them like a physical blow. They finally understood. This child was Dante Moretti's heir, and I was this heir's biological mother.Joey's legs gave out, and he collapsed to the floor. Vivian, already on the ground, stared into space, her eyes vacant with despair.Hearing that "his woman" and "his son" had both been bullied, Dante's expression finally changed. He slowly turned, his gaze sweeping over every single person present."Since the doctor has said that my wife and my son have been harmed.""Then," he said, his voice dropping to a lethal whisper, "it's time to settle the score."As Dante spoke, the air in the hall froze solid. He scanned the room, his gaze as sharp as a knife."I'll give everyone a chance."His ton

The few soldati who had laughed at me at the club were now trembling, holding onto tables just to stay upright. The "woman Joey discarded," the "pathetic ex-wife" they had just been mocking, was the real Donna. They were probably kicking themselves, sick with regret.I had dropped hints, one after another. My phone's lock screen, a photo of me and Dante. Me walking straight to the Donna's seat. Their arrogance had blinded them. Pathetic. They had no one to blame but themselves. They hadn't just offended anyone. They had offended the king of New York's underworld. The moment the words left my mouth, someone stepped forward.A woman in heavy makeup, one of Vivian's followers, Sofia. She had arrived late and missed the bloody scene. She also clearly didn't recognize Dante, assuming he was just some ordinary rich man."Elena, sweetheart, did you hire an actor? Is the kid part of the show?"She let out a laugh. "You've got real talent! Maybe I should find you some work. Who do you think you
