Chapter 4

Author: Bagel
Vivian's shriek ripped through the elegant hum of the hall.

Every guest turned to look in our direction, and a wave of whispers rippled through the room.

"Who is that woman? How dare she approach the Don's table?"

"Did she sneak in to cause trouble? Is she trying to humiliate all of us in front of the Don?"

"Security! How the hell did this bitch get in here?"

Under the weight of a hundred pairs of eyes, the color drained from Joey's face.

He immediately waved his hands at the people near him, desperate to distance himself. "I don't know her. Why would I know someone like that?"

Seeing Joey disown me so publicly, Vivian's eyes flashed with manic glee. She lunged at me.

"You bitch! Get the hell out of here before you get yourself killed!"

I watched her with an amused, cold smile. "Are you sure you want me to leave?"

My attitude infuriated her, and her eyes turned venomous. "Stop putting on airs. Drop the disgusting act."

She lunged, her fingers clawing for my dress.

I sidestepped her, but a foot shot out from behind, catching my ankle. I went down hard.

Vivian seized the opportunity.

She planted her stiletto heel on my arm, digging it into my skin. "I'll teach you to be so high and mighty! I'll teach you to ruin my night!"

She grabbed the shoulder strap of my gown and tore it, trying to humiliate me in front of everyone.

The fabric ripped. The dress Dante had personally had measured and made for me. A dress she couldn't afford with her life.

"Everyone, look! This woman is a fraud!"

The guests swarmed around us, some even pulling out their phones to take pictures.

The stiletto ground into my arm, threatening to snap the bone. Blood bloomed on the torn flesh where her heel dug in.

Angelo was jumping up and down in the crowd. "Hit her! Hit her! She's a bad woman!"

"Security! Drag this crazy bitch out of here and throw her in the East River!" Vivian shrieked hysterically.

The club's security guards, hearing the commotion, hurried over.

"Ma'am, you need to come with us," one of them said, his tone firm as he reached for my arm.

I struggled to stand, my voice choked. "Stop. I'm Dante's..."

Before I could get the words out, Vivian's hand cracked across my face. And then again.

"Shut up! You dare mention the Don's name? You're not worthy!"

My cheeks burned, and fresh blood seeped from the corner of my mouth.

Joey crouched down beside me, his voice a low, urgent whisper. "Adriana, stop this. You're going to be finished."

He looked at me, his eyes cold. "If you beg me, right now, I'll get you out of this. For Angelo's sake, I'll save your pathetic life."

I struggled to lift my head, to look at the man I had once loved so deeply.

There wasn't a trace of genuine concern in his eyes, only arrogance and condescension.

"Joey," I rasped, the words tearing from my throat. "You're all finished. You, your wife, your entire pathetic crew."

Coming back to New York, I hadn't planned on settling scores with them. It wasn't worth my time.

But now, I swore I would make every single one of them pay.

Joey's brow furrowed, and he was about to retort when he realized the entire hall had fallen silent.

Every person in the room had turned respectfully toward the main entrance.

He scrambled to pull me up, his voice a panicked hiss in my ear. "The Don is here. Shut your goddamn mouth, or so help me..."

A tall figure appeared in the doorway, flanked by a phalanx of bodyguards.

It was Dante.

He stood there, a titan in a perfectly tailored black suit, his face carved from ice.

His consigliere, Marco, was at his side, followed closely by several capos.

Beside his towering figure, a small hand was clasped in his—a little boy dressed in an exquisite miniature suit, looking like an angel with his perfect features.

The moment Joey saw him, he tried to yank me to my feet, but Dante's gaze had already locked onto our corner of the room.

He saw me, kneeling pathetically on the floor. He saw my torn dress. He saw the red handprint on my cheek.

His expression shifted instantly. The impassive mask cracked, replaced by a terrifying stillness.

The little boy beside Dante saw me on the ground and immediately broke free from his father's grasp.

His tiny legs carried him across the room as fast as they could go.

He threw himself down beside me, his voice breaking with tears as he called out in his clear, childish tone: "Mama!"

At the sound of the word, Angelo rushed over, pointing a trembling finger at Matteo. "What are you talking about? She's my mom!"

The entire hall fell deathly silent.

Joey froze, his voice cracking as he stared at the boy. "Did he just say... Mama?"

The room was quiet again, leaving just the three of us.Matteo had been woken by the noise. He rubbed his eyes and asked:"Mama, what happened to that bad man? Did he bully you again?""It's okay, baby," I stroked his little head. "The bad man has been chased away."A week later, I was discharged and went home.To make my recovery easier, Dante had my art studio moved to the ground floor. One afternoon, while organizing Dante's study, I accidentally discovered a hidden compartment.Inside was a thick stack of photos and newspaper clippings.Curious, I took them out and began to look through them. I froze. They were all photos of me.From my teenage art exhibitions to photos of my life in my twenties. There was even a newspaper clipping from my very first art show. What shocked me most was that some of the photos I didn't even remember being taken. They had clearly been taken in secret."What are you looking at?"Dante's voice sounded from behind me, making me jump.I turned to see him

"Dante..." I looked at his exhausted face. "You haven't slept these past few days, have you?"He didn't answer, just squeezed my hand tighter."I thought I was going to lose you," his voice was soft, laced with a rare vulnerability."When I saw you lying in a pool of blood... I was so scared."I reached out and stroked his cheek. "I will never leave you.""Never."Dante lowered his head and placed a soft kiss on my lips. The kiss was light and gentle, as if confirming that I was truly alive."Rest for a few more days, and then we'll go home," he said.I nodded, then a thought occurred to me. "When did the doctor say I can be discharged?""Tomorrow," Dante replied. "But you'll need to rest at home for a while."Just then, the hospital room door was pushed open again.Assuming it was Carlie, I spoke without turning my head."That was fast.""Elena." Joey's voice was raw. He stood in the doorway, his face a swollen, bruised mess. "I knew you wouldn't give up on me."My head snapped toward

"I arrived just after you collapsed. Poor Matteo was terrified, seeing you so still.""Dante's eyes looked like he was ready to eat someone. After you were sent to the hospital, Matteo grabbed a fork and stabbed Vivian right in the hand. I have no idea where a three-year-old gets that kind of strength.""Later, when Dante learned what they had done to you, he had his men hold Joey down and took his fingers. One by one.""And Matteo... he watched the whole thing without flinching. He's a Moretti, through and through."Carlie took a sip of water and continued:"And because Vivian had scratched you.""Do you know what Dante did?"Carlie's voice dropped, trembling slightly. "He had his men hold her down. Then, in front of everyone, he took a pair of pliers and pulled out every single one of her fingernails.""With every nail he pulled, he asked, 'Still want what belongs to another?'""Vivian was screaming, so Dante had his men melt down all her gaudy jewelry. Then he forced the molten gold

I looked at the fragile hope in Dante's eyes, and my heart broke for him.The man who commanded New York's underworld was, in that moment, just a boy desperate to be loved."Yes, Dante," I whispered, stroking his cheek. "I belong only to you.""Always."Hearing my answer, the smile on Dante's face grew even brighter. He carefully kissed my forehead, as if I were the most precious treasure in the world.Joey, seeing us ignore him completely, clenched his fists, his face contorted with anger.Matteo had no patience for this loser either."My mama is the queen of our house. You're nobody."Matteo looked Joey up and down with disgust. "I know all about you. How does a scumbag who hurt my mama have the nerve to compare himself to my Papa?""You're not as handsome as my Papa, not as tall as my Papa, and you don't have my Papa's status."The little one wrinkled his nose. "And a loser who leeches off women stinks of desperation. It's pathetic."The surrounding guests let out a soft, complicit

After the examination, the doctor rose respectfully. He looked at Dante and reported in a formal tone:"Don, the Donna's injuries are superficial. There's no serious damage.""But the young master was frightened. He will need comforting."The words "young master" struck them like a physical blow. They finally understood. This child was Dante Moretti's heir, and I was this heir's biological mother.Joey's legs gave out, and he collapsed to the floor. Vivian, already on the ground, stared into space, her eyes vacant with despair.Hearing that "his woman" and "his son" had both been bullied, Dante's expression finally changed. He slowly turned, his gaze sweeping over every single person present."Since the doctor has said that my wife and my son have been harmed.""Then," he said, his voice dropping to a lethal whisper, "it's time to settle the score."As Dante spoke, the air in the hall froze solid. He scanned the room, his gaze as sharp as a knife."I'll give everyone a chance."His ton

The few soldati who had laughed at me at the club were now trembling, holding onto tables just to stay upright. The "woman Joey discarded," the "pathetic ex-wife" they had just been mocking, was the real Donna. They were probably kicking themselves, sick with regret.I had dropped hints, one after another. My phone's lock screen, a photo of me and Dante. Me walking straight to the Donna's seat. Their arrogance had blinded them. Pathetic. They had no one to blame but themselves. They hadn't just offended anyone. They had offended the king of New York's underworld. The moment the words left my mouth, someone stepped forward.A woman in heavy makeup, one of Vivian's followers, Sofia. She had arrived late and missed the bloody scene. She also clearly didn't recognize Dante, assuming he was just some ordinary rich man."Elena, sweetheart, did you hire an actor? Is the kid part of the show?"She let out a laugh. "You've got real talent! Maybe I should find you some work. Who do you think you
